    The respiratory system takes up oxygen from the air we breathe and expels the unwanted carbon dioxide. The lungs are inside the chest, protected by the ribcage and wrapped in a membrane called the pleura. When we breathe, the diaphragm contracts and relaxes, allowing air to be'sucked' into the lungs and 'pushed' out of the lungs.

The breathing muscles Tostayinflated,thelungsrelyonavacuuminsidethechest.Thediaphragmisasheetofmuscle slungunderneaththelungs.Whenwebreathe,thediaphragmcontractsandrelaxes.Thischange inairpressuremeansthatairissuckedintothelungsoninhalationandpushedoutofthelungs onexhalation.Theintercostalmusclesbetweentheribshelptochangetheinternalpressureby liftingandrelaxingtheribcageinrhythmwiththediaphragm. The exchange of gas Thebloodcontainingcarbondioxideentersthecapillariesliningthealveoli.Thegasmovesfrom thebloodacrossathinfilmofmoistureandintotheairsac.Thecarbondioxideisthenbreathed out.Oninhalation,oxygenisdrawndownintothealveoliwhereitpassesintothebloodusingthe samefilmofmoisture. Speech Therespiratorysystemalsoallowsustotalk.Exhaledairrunsoverthevocalcordsinsidethe throat.Thesoundofthevoicedependson: Thetensionandlengthofthevocalcords Theshapeofthechest Howmuchairisbeingexhaled.
