the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened (Zechariah 11:17).

his chapter of the book of Zechariah could be titled, The Evil Shepherd. Israel rejected the good shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep, accepting instead the evil shepherd who destroys, the father of lies, the murderer from the beginning. Jesus prophesied Israels choice when He said, I am come in my Fathers name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive (John 5:43). Here we are reminded of the great imitation, the deception that is flooding the Church in our days. Fervently, the apostle Paul warned of the end times in Acts 20:29-30, For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

The key issue is that imitation often looks real. Those who do not have the ability to distinguish between the real and the fake, between truth and lies are living in extreme danger. The imitation is exposed in 2 Corinthians 11:4, For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. This clearly speaks of another Jesus, another spirit and another gospel. This is the work of the deceiver, who looks real by appearing as apostles and an angel of light. We read in verses 13-15, For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his min-
isters also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. How are we to recognize these false messengers? There are two important marks: 1) The imitation messengers will never proclaim the whole truth of the Bible. The horrendous judgment that is to come upon planet Earth, as revealed through the prophetic Word, is conveniently left out in the proclamation of their gospel. 2) The messengers of the evil shepherds will always proclaim the positive aspects of being a Christian: a better life, more possessions, greater success on all levels of life and society. However, the Bible reveals quite a different picture. An example is the apostle Paul, a well-to-do, highly educated and respected member of society. He had significant power over other people before he became a believer in Jesus Christ. Here is his testimony: Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness (2 Corinthians 11:23-27). The apostle Paul clearly testifies that he had no advantage by becoming a Christian. Now, lets turn our attention to chapter 11 of the book of Zechariah. Again, we find that the words of this chapter are the direct words of God. Zechariah is not passing on a vision, or as often is the case, the word of the Lord came unto me. The Lord God is speaking directly. Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour thy cedars. Howl, fir tree; for the cedar is fallen; because the mighty are spoiled: howl, O ye oaks of Bashan; for the forest of the vintage is come down (Zechariah 11:1-2). Lebanon is praised for its abundance of timber. The cedars are famous, and Solomon imported them when he built the temple in Jerusalem. Bashan is the territory that Moses gave to half of the tribe of Manasseh, according to Deuteronomy 3:13, And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants. This is quite noteworthy, because the two and a half tribes of Israel requested from Moses to have as their inheritance the land that was on the east side of the Jordan, although this was not originally called the Promised Land, the land flowing with milk and honey. O ye oaksthe vintage is come down. This is most certainly a description of judgment upon the physical territory of the land. Then it goes on, There is a voice of the howling of the shepherds; for their glory is spoiled: a voice of the roaring of young lions; for the pride of Jordan is spoiled (Zechariah 11:3). Not only does the vegetation of the land come under judgment, but also the shepherds and the animals are placed under the judgment of God. Thus saith the LORD my God; Feed the flock of the slaughter; Whose possessors slay them, and hold themselves not guilty: and they that sell them say, Blessed be the LORD; for I am rich: and their own shepherds pity them not (Zechariah 11:4-5). Doubtless, this is a picture of the people of Israel. They had appropriated the blessings and prosperity God had given to the nation for their own selfish purposes. God does not just say, Feed the flock, but adds, Feed the flock of the slaughter. The Tanakh reads, Tend the sheep meant for slaughter. This is nothing other than the slaughter of the flock for the gain of rich and powerful individuals. But those who are in charge, who have the power, who take advantage of the flock, are so hardened in their heart that they are incapable of recognizing their evildoing. They say, Blessed be the LORD; for I am rich. This clearly confirms that prosperity was prevalent during those days, and religion was practiced as well. Things were going rather well for these possessors. They had it all. Everything was going splendidly, and they gave their religion credit for their success. What a picture of our days. Possessions have become one of the idols of the endtimes. People work increasingly more to earn money, primarily for the purpose of having things, being possessors, totally disregarding Gods ordinances to take care of the flock. This reminds us of the words found in James 5:1, which are addressed to the rich, Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Then in verse 3 it speaks of the last days, Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Verse 5 speaks of the slaughter, Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Because of this diabolically merciless behavior, we read in verse 6, For I will no more pity the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD: but, lo, I will deliver the men every one into his neighbours hand, and into the hand of his king: and they shall smite the land, and out of their hand I will not deliver them. There is no more grace, but utter destruction; this is expressed with the words, I will not deliver. Next, we come to a peculiar action. And I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, O poor of the flock. And I took unto me two staves; the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock (Zechariah 11:7). For the sake of the poor, He uses two staffs: one Beauty, and the other Bands. The one, Beauty, as we will later see, represents the covenant God made with His people. The other, Bands, represents the unity between Judah and Israel. We must take note of the word poor.

They too come under the judgment, but there is a distinct difference, as we will see. With verse 8, something new and different is revealed, Three shepherds also I cut off in one month; and my soul lothed them, and their soul also abhorred me. Who are the three shepherds? We propose they represent the King, the Priests and the Prophets. The Old Testament covenant failed. Hebrews 7:12 says, For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. A new Prophet, Priest and King was to come. Hebrews 8:13 speaks of that one: In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away. Quite obviously, this also points prophetically to Jesus. He is the King, the Prophet and the Priest. But within the infrastructure of the people of Israel, those three failed miserably. As a result, God withdrew His provision for His people and literally left them alone, Then said I, I will not feed you: that that dieth, let it die; and that that is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat every one the flesh of another (Zechariah 11:9). Now we will see the meaning of the two staffs, Beauty and Bands. And I took my staff, even Beauty, and cut it asunder, that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the people (Zechariah 11:10). This is not the unconditional covenant made with Abraham, but the one He made with all the people. Luther translates this with all the nations. What covenant is that? It is a covenant of grace. We read of it in Genesis 8:22, While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. This is for all people at all times anywhere on planet Earth. This is pointing to Gods new covenant of grace, which He would offer to all people of the world, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). The breaking of this covenant was a sign recognized by those who were waiting for the Lord, And it was broken in that day: and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the LORD (Zechariah 11:11). The poor of the flock can also be translated with oppressed or despised. Here we are immediately reminded of our Lord in Matthew 5:3, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. This poor flock was waiting upon the Lord, and they recognized it to be the Word of the Lord. Now another amazing prophecy is being revealed. And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12). The Lord is asking the price of His worth; the answer, thirty pieces of silver. This points to Judas Iscariot, And [Judas] said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:15). So our Lord was sold for thirty pieces of silver.
Endtime Catastrophes?
At the time of writing, large volumes of oil are pouring from below the ocean floors into the Gulf of Mexico. No one is able to measure the full extent of the damage done, and the future, according to the media, looks grim. This catastrophe was initiated by man in his seemingly unending thirst for energy. This natural manmade catastrophe is unprecedented but has revealed mans limited ability to control that aspect of planet Earths resources. Not too long ago, the world experienced a volcano eruption in Iceland, resulting in the escape of millions of tons of ash into the air. Mostly affected was Europe, where the entire airline industry had to close down. This was a nature initiated catastrophe that severely affected mans ability to travel. Just recently, the G20 met in Toronto, Canada, and the media proclaimed that the mood was not positive. No one really knows how to effectively and permanently solve the worlds financial and economic disaster. On the daily basis, we are bombarded with more global news, mostly negative. pect more catastrophes and more natural and manmade disasters? Is this the beginning of the fulfillment of Jesus word, For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be (Matthew 24:21)? What happened to that money? And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD (Zechariah 11:13). The price was determined by the enemy. In the New Testament, the enemies of Jesus also agreed on 30 pieces of silver. What a precise prophecy almost 500 years before the birth of Christ! Judas who betrayed Jesus later confessed that he had sinned, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that (Matthew 27:4). His action fulfilled prophecy, And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself (verse 5). The priests recognized that the blood money should not be used for the temple service, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood (Matthew 27:6). Instead, And they took counsel, and bought with them the potters field, to bury strangers in (Matthew 27:7). Next comes the other staff, which is translated in the KJV as Bands, and in the Tanakh with the word Unity: Then I cut asunder mine other staff, even Bands, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel (Zechariah 11:14). We see the reaffirmation over and again that the 10-tribe Israel ceased to be a separate identity from the tribe of Judah. However, those who were waiting for the Lord joined the tribe of Judah and became Jews. Hence, today no one really knows precisely from which tribe they descended, except to know that they are Jews. And the LORD said unto me, Take unto thee yet the instruments of a foolish shepherd (Zechariah 11:15). We are not informed as to what these instruments are that belong to a foolish shepherd, but quite obviously they were things that were not needed to lead the sheep to the green pasture. This contains an important admonition for us today. We are instructed by the Lord to Feed my sheep, which means, Lead my sheep to the pasture. We read the clear instruction in John 21: Jesus asked Peter three times, lovest thou me? After each affirmative answer, Jesus said, Feed my lambs, and twice Feed my sheep. Why three times? Peter had denied the Lord three times. The words, Feed my sheep are rather limited in translation. Lead my sheep to the pasture seems to be more accurate. We dont feed sheep, we lead them to the pasture, to the precious Word of God. They may eat anywhere, from Genesis to Revelation. The famous 23rd Psalm expresses this leading to the pasture very fittingly, The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still watersYea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me (verses 1-2, 4). the irrevocable eternal law of God and the guiding staffcomfort and protect the sheep. Zechariah 11 ends with the revelation of the evil shepherd, the Antichrist, For, lo, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, which shall not visit those that be cut off, neither shall seek the young one, nor heal that that is broken, nor feed that that standeth still: but he shall eat the flesh of the fat, and tear their claws in pieces. Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened (verses 16-17). This evil shepherd does not visit those in prison, does not protect the little ones, heal the brokenhearted or feed the hungry. The evil shepherd fulfills the measure of evil by doing the opposite of good. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. It was Isaiah who proclaimed, The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn (Isaiah 61: 1-2). That is the Good Shepherd. MC

n the New Testament, there are seven references to the time of Noah: in Matthew 24:37-39, Luke 3:36 and 17:26-27, Hebrews 11:7, 1 Peter 3:20, 2 Peter 2:5 and 3:5-7. In addition to this, there are also extra-Biblical references: The worldwide flood of Noahs time has parallels in more than 40 cultures which had no Bible,1 writes Arnold Fruchtenbaum. In a recent issue of a German scientific magazine called P .M. Perspective, it was written concerning the possibility of a historical flood, And sure enough, in a historical trial based on circumstantial evidence, the proof would probably suffice.2
Noteworthy: 1. The world was not destroyed in

The end times will also be characterized by the fact that many will forsake their faith in the Bible. 2. It is striking that in the end-times statements concerning the time of Noah (the flood) and the time of Lot (Sodom and Gomorrah), these are portrayed in direct connection with one another (Luke 17:26-29, 2 Peter 2:4-9, cf. Jude 6-7). We should keep this connection in mind. 3. The two events, flood and judgment by fire, are expressly written down as a warning example for the future. Peter emphasizes this in 2 Peter 2:6, as also Jude in verses 6-7. This means that we are confronted in the end times by a very similar situation as it was then. The end times will be ruled by a spirit like that of the time of Noah and Lot, But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be (Matthew 24:37). 4. I do not think that Noah or Lot pointed their fingers at their generation or felt any kind of pleasure of revenge, but rather compassion, and they de-
terminedly passed on Gods message to their generation, warning of the coming judgment: Noah: his name means preacher of righteousness, and not preacher of revenge (2 Peter 2:5). Lot: was vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked. He was tormented and had a righteous soul. He pleaded with his generation to repent (2 Peter 2:7-8 and Genesis 19:14). The Church takes no pleasure in godlessness, but does not react with hardness, lack of love or threats, which come from a cold, religious spirit of judgment. The Church suffers, is tormented and sheds tears. It hurts her to see godlessness, and she pleads for the salvation of her generation, just as Lot did (Genesis 19:7 & 14). 5. That the world before Noah is called the heavens of old and the world that then was (2 Peter 3:5-7), means that today we are living in a second world and under a second heaven. Our earth today is different from that before the flood. We have the earth before the flood (the first), the earth after the flood (the second, present one), and in the future there will be a new heaven and a new earth (the third). According to 2 Corinthians 12:2-4, the apostle Paul was caught up to the third heaven, i.e. to Paradise. We speak, therefore, automatically of three spheres: 1. the sky, 2. the universe, and 3. heaven, where God dwells. But is this

really the way it is meant? Perhaps the third heaven, i.e. Paradise, simply describes the third heaven in the sequence of 1. antediluvian, 2. postdiluvian and 3. future (the new heaven, which we await.) The judgment by water at the beginning of mankind is a picture of the future judgment by fire at the end of human history (2 Peter 3:5-7). In Genesis 6:4 it says, The same became mighty men [Nephilim] which were of old, men of renown. Nephilim is sometimes translated with the word giants. This term points to people who have influence. It comes from a root that means, to fall. They are fallen beings who cause others to fall, rulers who are ruled by demons. Take a look at our world. It was also a time in which people vehemently resisted the working of the Holy Spirit. Everything was tolerated, everything allowed, people were liberal and open to everything; only what came from the Holy Spirit was rejected. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years (Genesis 6:3). The time before the flood was characterized by a special working of the Holy Spirit and less by laws. It was a time of extraordinary grace, which men took complete advantage of. They resisted the Holy Spirit of Jesus, who already preached in and through Noah to the world of that time (1 Peter 3:18-20). But now God spoke and said that His Spirit would terminate His working after another 120 years, that He would withdraw and make room for the judgment. A similar scenario will be repeated shortly before the flood of the apocalypse. The Holy Spirit, who is working in grace now will, according to 2 Thessalonians 2:6-7, be taken away before the judgment, together with the Church, to make room for the judgment. This points to the fact that this age will end in the same way as the time before the flood. Arnold Fruchtenbaum explains, The

came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they choseThere were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown (Genesis 6:1-2 & 4). The sons of God spoken of here were not human beings but angels (cf. Job 1:6 & 2:1, and Psalm 29:1 & 89:7). Daughters were born to men, human beings, and sons of God took them as wives (verse 2). The difference between the sons of God and daughters of men is clearly emphasized. If the sons of God were simply human beings, it would have to say, sons of men, just as it says daughters of men. Human beings are called sons of men (Psalm 33:13). Ezekiel and Daniel, for instance, are called sons of men (Ezekiel 2:1 and Daniel 8:17). The Lord Jesus Christ was both: Son of God, as far as His divinity was concerned, and Son of man, as far as His incarnation through Mary was concerned (Matthew 8:20 & 29). Jude also makes it clear that the term sons of God does not refer to human beings, but fallen angels, And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day (Jude 6, cf. 2 Peter 2:4-5, Job 1:6 and 1 Kings 22:19-23).

days of Noah are a time which can be compared with the days before the Rapture.3 The generation of Noah reached a point where everything that is evil, unrighteous and sinful was the normal way of life. Values had been overturned. Evil was called good and useful, while the good that the Holy Spirit wanted to do was rejected and called evil. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth (Genesis 6:12, cf. verse 5). We experience daily how our time is ruled by demons: people are resisting the Word of God and the working of the Holy Spirit, and evil is regarded as completely normal. Things that were taboo or rejected for being perverse a few decades ago, now characterize our world today and are integrated as completely normal things in our society. In the meantime, they have become so normal that those who speak out against them are condemned for not being normal! At the time of Noah it is clear that sin progressed to the ultimate (Genesis 6:5 & 12), and we see that there comes a time where the measure is full and the world ripe for judgment (Genesis 15:16, 13:13, 18:20 and Jude 7). This is the case when Gods commandments are not only broken, in the sense of not being obeyed, but are also radically rejected and declared invalid. The following examples are symptomatic of this: In the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of America, it was decided last year that in future, people could also be ordained who lived in same-sex partnerships. The rule was to be put into practice in 2010. A female pastor said on this subject, I believe we have gone farther than God allows. The irony is that during this assembly, a tornado blew off the roof of the Lutheran Central Church in which this decision was made.4 In the Netherlands, a band has emerged that call themselves Devils Blood. At their appearances on stage, they pour out 20 liters of pigs blood. A member of the band said, The blood of animals is for us a possibility of bringing death onto the stage and being less human. It is a way to make our own identities and personalities disappear and to become spirits.5

Simultaneously, Biblical preaching or Biblical quotations and references are dismissed as being absurd and are ridiculed and mocked. And laws are being so turned around that it is becoming ever more easy to accuse a committed Christianity. We have reached the point today when we are almost afraid even to hint at the fact that God will judge the immoral and adulterers (Hebrews 13:4). When we preach that today, we are already making ourselves look ridiculous. This does not belong in our society today: it is oldfashioned. But in these very circumstances, we see how our time resembles the time of Noah and really is old-fashioned for this reason.
An example of Noah in the midst of time: about 2,500

years after the flood, the Redeemer appeared, the ark of eternal salvation. The one in whose spirit Noah had worked appeared in flesh and blood (1 Peter 3:18-20). Although the love of God in the person of Jesus had now appearedgrace, forgiveness, compassion and perfect righteousnessJesus also had to proclaim the end-times judgment. The Lord used the time of Noah and Lot as an example of the time before His return. And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; but the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed (Luke 17:26-30). A few things strike us in these words of Jesus: 1. The close connection between the story of Noah and the story of Lot. The end times will resemble the time of Noah and the time of Lot. 2. The carelessness of those times where spiritual things were concerned. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fullness of bread and abundance of idleness was in her, it says in Ezekiel 16:49. Social life centered around the things of this life. The people were concerned with human welfare and comfort. In modern terms this would be climate, food, vitamins, health, business, etc. People

The health religion is the most powerful of all times and is showing more and more totalitarian characteristics. While you can make any kind of joke about Jesus today, we cannot allow ourselves to do this where the theme is healthMoreover it has become more expensive than all other religionsThe health mania has even reached parts of the Church, said this author of many bestsellers. While man used to fast to practice self-denial, today people fast to go to heaven as late as possible and stay healthy. Health is good for Christians, a high priority but not the highest, said Lutz. Instead of only living for prevention, Christians should enjoy every day of their lives as a gift of God.6 How modern are the words of Jesus! I recently checked the TV schedule in a daily newspaper and counted the number of programs that make the endtimes statements of Jesus very topical. We are fully in the trend of the statements concerning Noah and Lots time. Let nobody say the Bible is old-fashioned! They did eat, they drank. How many TV programs are about cooking and eating! They bought, they sold, they planted, they builded. How many programs are there on the subject of finance and economy, and how much time devoted to advertising certain products and urging us to buy them? They married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day. How many programs are

there about people seeking partners? Partner-seeking via the Internet or agencies is completely normal today. For reasons that have nothing to do with the matter in hand, nobody seems to want to wait until they meet someone in their daily lives. This is why dating agencies are flourishing, particularly under the anonymous protection of the Internet.7 Most of the above-mentioned things are in themselves not sinful. But when God is excluded, salvation in Christ is rejected and man is ruled only by earthly things, then they become an end-times sign. Leave us alone! was the motto then, and this is what it is now. Leave us alone with your apocalypseyou are pessimists, gloom-and-doom preachers you only want to spoil our livesyou religious fanatics and party poopersyou are the negative ones in our society! Why is it then that tragedies and suicides are increasing? Why are the psychiatric clinics so full? And why has there never been such a great need for psycho-pharmaceutical drugs as in recent years? Why are discontent, fear and insecurity lying like a fog over our society, if it is all so good without Jesus Christ? 3. In the times of Noah and Lot, we see that it was not the masses who were in the right. The masses were wrong, and the minorities of Noah and Lot

were right. In the end, God will be right, His Word will be relevant and not the attitude of the masses which proclaims, Everybody is doing it, so it must be right. It says so in the media. Do you know what the last sentence of the Lord Jesus was before He started to speak of the time of Noah? Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be (Matthew 24:35-37). The Word of God is sure and irrefutable. Even if nobody knows the day and the hour, we have one clue in the fact that our time is very like the time of Noah. Lot is called, that righteous man. He was saved before the judgment. He is a picture of the Church. We have been made righteous through Israels preaching of righteousness (Noah). The Church lives, like Lot, in the midst of a world of unrighteousness, but she believes and will be saved before the judgment (2 Peter 2:7 & 9). Just as God saved righteous Lot, the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations. Lot was saved out of the place of temptation in that he was previously snatched out of Sodom (Genesis 19:16-17 & 22). In the same way, the Church will be saved from the place of temptation, from this world, by being raptured before the apocalyptic flood. If only the unrighteous will be kept for the day of judgment, the righteous will, of a necessity, be liberated before this day (1 Thessalonians 5: 1-10). We are now before the last flood of the apocalyptic judgments. The fire of divine judgment will come. Are we like Noah, are we preachers of righteousness? Are we God-fearing, as he was? Are we obedient, as he was? Are we doing all that we can to pass on to our generation the righteousness that counts with God? Are we helping to build the ark of the Church? Are we pointing to what is coming?

The example of Noah for the end times: Our time

stands before a new flood, not a flood of water but the flood of the apocalypse, the seals, trumpets and vials of wrath of judgment. Then, heaven and earth will be shaken once again (cf. Revelation 16:20-21). And after these catastrophic judgments, there will be a new heaven and a new earth in which righteousness dwells (2 Peter 3:13 and Revelation 21). The times of Noah and Lot show us that the Rapture is very near. Noah is called by Peter, a preacher of righteousness; Lot, on the other hand, simply just Lotthat righteous man (2 Peter 2:5 & 7-8). What does this difference mean in the light of prophecy? Noah, the preacher of righteousness, had to go through the judgment but was preserved. This is a picture of Israel. It is Israel who preached to us about the righteousness in Jesus (Romans 9:4-5).

Israels recent Navy attack on the Turkish launched Freedom Flotilla has caused an uproar and a wave of protest from virtually the world over. The Russian news media outlet Itar-Tass writes among other things on 1 June 2010:
The U.N. Security Council has approved after 12-hour-long consultations the statement of its president, which denounced the actions taken by Israel against the Freedom Flotilla. Aside from it, the resolution urges to investigate the incident. The U.N. Security Council demanded as well the release of the captured boats and of the people staying on board. The emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council was convened on the initiative of Turkey and Lebanon after the Israeli naval vessels attacked a humanitarian convoy in the neutral waters, which was going to the Gaza Strip. At least 10 people died and some 30 were wounded as a result of the attack.

What would Turkey do if Israel, or for that matter, any other country in the world, would sail its ships into northern Cyprus without properly authorized documentation from the Turkish government? That ship would most likely be blown out of the water instantly.
Hamas manifesto clearly states that it will never recognize the State of Israel and will only cease aggression after the Zionist identity (Israel) is totally eradicated. These few facts are more than sufficient for Israel to declare Gaza an enemy identity. Subsequently, it is Israels international right to protect its citizens from such openly declared aggressions. Hamas-initiated bombardment of Israeli territory in the past has confirmed and proven that the leaders of Gaza are at war with Israel. Israels Right to Defense There is absolutely no question about Israels right to inspect all shipments by air, sea, or land that are destined for the Hamas-occupied Gaza Strip. No country in the world would allow a third-party country to supply in any way, shape or form assistance to an enemy identity without their expressed permission. Turkey has been asked repeatedly not to allow transfer of assistance to Gaza. Israel was and is willing to assist in transfer of humanitarian aid, but Turkey has deliberately refused. One would think that the UN Security Council would hold an emergency meeting with the aim to condemn Turkish violation of international law. What would Turkey do if Israel, or for that matter, any other country in the world, would sail its ships into northern Cyprus without properly authorized documentation from the Turkish government? That ship would most likely be blown out of the water instantly. Would the United States permit unauthorized vessels to dock at its coast? Absolutely not! Thus the simple question, why is Turkey allowed to send unauthorized vessels to a terrorist identity that is at war with Israel? Shouldnt Turkey be punished and condemned by the U.N. Security Council?
Once again, simple facts and realities are totally ignored when it comes to condemning Israel. What the Bible Says Here we need to read Scripture regarding an event that was not concerned with a nation but with one person: For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together (Acts 4:27). This took place almost 2,000 years ago. It was not against Israel, but against one persona Jew, an Israeli, a man who was the Son of God. It is significant that the world is actually accused of participating in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ the Son of God. Herod is named first; he can be considered a half-Jew. Pontius Pilate, the representative of the Roman government, is mentioned second. Third are the Gentilesthats the rest of the world; and lastly, Israel. The Apostle Peter points the finger of accusation against the whole world, including Israel, although Rome and the rest of the Gentile world probably had no idea of what was going on in Jerusalem. Therefore, we must analyze this event from a different angle. First, from prophetic perspectives we must understand Israels special position among the nations of the world. This is, for example, documented in Deuteronomy 14:2: For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth. That is a declaration from Gods perspectives. He chose Israel; He led Israel through the wilderness, caused them to take possession of the Promised Land, and it was the Lord God of Israel who cast them out of their own land to be dispersed into all the nations of the world. But that was not the end. God clearly promised through His prophets that Israel would return to their land: And I will bring them out from the peoAUGUST 2010 19
The prophet Joel concludes his book with these words: But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation. For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the LORD dwelleth in Zion (Joel 3:20-21).

On November 29, 1947, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a Resolution for the establishment of an independent Jewish State in Palestine, and called upon the inhabitants of the country to take such steps as may be necessary on their part to put the plan into effect. This recognition by the United Nations of the right of the Jewish people to establish their independent State may not be revoked. It is, moreover, the selfevident right of the Jewish people to be a nation, as all other nations, in its own sovereign State. We appeal to the United Nations to assist the Jewish people in the building of its State and to admit Israel into the family of nations.
ple, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country (Ezekiel 34:13). For 62 years, Israel has existed as an independent nation in the land, although on limited territory. What is Israels greatest hope and desire? This is expressed with one word: Shalompeace. During its revived existence as a nation, Israel has fervently pursued avenues of peace with its neighbors, but without success. Although Egypt and Jordan have signed a peace treaty with Israel, it is a treaty not based on the establishment of peace, but only regarding the ceasing of war between those nations. During these years, Israel has built a vibrant economy and has attained great achievements in science, military technology, and particularly in agriculture. Subsequently, Israel was able to establish relationships with an ever-increasing number of countries. Thus, Israels presence has been tacitly accepted by most of the world. However, Israels hope is still anchored in the realization of being a nation just

Israels Greatest Tragedy With this fact in mind, we come to the real issue that is taking place in Israel and regarding the rest of the world. Over 3,100 years ago, Israel deliberately rejected being led by God; instead, they chose themselves a king for a specific purpose: They said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles (1 Samuel 8:19-20). We note the words, be like all the nations. That is Israels great tragedy. Later, the King of the Jews, the Messiah of Israel, made this prophecy: I am come in my Fathers name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive (John 5:43).

As believers, we must learn to take heed of the prophetic Word and realize that the deeper reason for any and all commotions, whether in America, Russia, China, or the Muslim world, is always the attempt to hinder the fulfillment of His prophetic Word.
Israels desire to be an equal member of the family of nations will lead to the acceptance of the Antichrist as the Messiah of Israel. But thats not the end. Israel has something no other nation in the world has, namely, an unconditional covenant. The motivating factor of this covenant is Gods grace. Thus, the prophets proclaim: I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him (Hosea 14:4). The prophet Joel concludes his book with these words: But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation. For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the LORD dwelleth in Zion (Joel 3:20-21). Amos adds in the last verse he writes: And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God (Amos 9:15). Judgment upon the Nations The continuous condemnation of Israel by the nations of the world will seal their own condemnation. Every country on planet Earth was established by military force. But Israel is being denied this right. Every country, based on unwritten international law, has the right to defend itself against any enemy, but Israel does not. In this light, we understand the proclamation written in Psalm 2:1-3: Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. We must take careful notice that the political elite, the powerful of this world, are not just opposing the little nation of Israel, but they are rebelling against the Lord and against His anointed. That is the point where the nations of the world make their fatal mistake. They are cursing Israel with repeated condemnation, deliberately ignor-
ing Gods eternal resolutions: I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee. The nations of the world are cursing the blessing of God, and therefore will harvest the consequences. How does God react to the commotions of the world? He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision (Psalm 2:4). The fact that the nations are united more than ever against Israel harbors the thundering message of the coming collective salvation of the nation of Israel on the one hand, and the destruction of the nations of the world on the other. However, before this occurs, the Church of Jesus Christwhich is the spiritual habitation of God and resides in all the nations of the worldwill have to be removed. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:5). The Apostle Paul confirms the process of this spiritual building in Ephesians 2:20-22: And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. As believers, we must learn to take heed of the prophetic Word and realize that the deeper reason for any and all commotions, whether in America, Russia, China, or the Muslim world, is always the attempt to hinder the fulfillment of His prophetic Word. The same enemy, the father of lies, the murderer from the beginning, tries to sow disunity within the Church of Jesus Christ in order to hinder the completion of the Church, which will climax in the collective Rapture of all born-again believers into the presence of the Lord. The same enemy, who is identified as the god of this world, uses all the nations of the world to hinder the fulfillment of the prophetic Word.

The god of this world is the ruler of ALL nations and vehemently opposes the unconditional covenant guaranteeing Israels boundaries. They may agree that Israel should exist, but only in a limited area.
Some nations would like to see Israel totally eradicated and replaced with an Islamic government. They are the most obvious enemies. The other group, which is actually much more dangerous, consists of the nations that have good relationships with the nation of Israel. They may oppose here and there anti-Israel resolutions by the United Nations, but in reality they are diabolically inspired bitter enemies of Gods promises. They may agree that Israel should exist, but only in a limited area. There is no nation, nor ever will be one, that will agree
with Israels boundaries as set forth in Holy Scripture: In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates (Genesis 15:18). That is the spiritual significance of Israels virtually unending conflicts. Its not just Hamas, Gaza, Turkey and the Muslim world, but the culprit is the WHOLE world, all nations with their resolute decisions: Israel must stay in the borders we have determined. This process is not limited to the recent flotilla tragedy, but began with the creation of Israel about 4,000 years ago in Egypt, and will continue until the Prince of Peace comes to Israel. (395)

In the first two parts of this series, we documented the rapid economic and geopolitical rise of a number of Asian countries over the past halfcentury. In addition, we pointed out related developments that may have alignments with specific Bible prophecies. We closed Part II of this series with a jarring report on the skewed gender preferences for male children in the populous nations of both China and India today.
ould this rather sudden development align with the prophecy found in Revelation 9:14-16, which mentions an action involving troops numbering 200 million? A number of major questions still beckon in our investigation of Asias possible endtime roles: Will Asian nations yet take a dominant role in world affairs? Could certain Asian nations form part of the final world order? Just what developments or events prompt the Kings of the East mentioned in Revelation 16:12 to cross over the Euphrates River? We will attempt some answers.
As we learned, two countries in Asia alone account for almost two-fifths of the worlds populationChina and India. Overall, approximately three-fifths of the worlds population lives east of the Euphrates River in Asia. Yet, population trends are suddenly changing. In addition to the sudden shift to gendercide in Asia and India, the birth rate has been falling rapidly in Asia. It is possible that Asian populations could begin declining in the next half century. China, specifically, will face one of the steepest aging trends in the world during this period. Twenty-five to 50 years from now, the population of Chinaindeed that of Asia at largewould no longer be sufficient to

the French premier, Charles DeGaulle once opined. Its agendas find deep motivations. Chinas deportment will be influenced by the fact that it has existed as a country millenniums before the US and other high income countries of today. After all, China was the worlds largest economy for 18 of the last 20 centuries. Finally, China is not militarily reliant upon the West as Japan was when it entered its fast-growth phase. This affords a measure of autonomy. It can choose to align itself against the West. In conclusion, China is no ones lap dog. It is an independent player on the world scene. Foreign pressure (gaiatsu) is not likely to be effective. Can anyone stop China from pursuing its own interest? Is a Dominant Asia Inevitable? Though it may today appear that the economic advance of China and other Asian nations is unstoppable, this is not necessarily a valid conclusion. In fact, it is not at all likely that Far-East Asian nations will come to dominate the world any time soon, if ever. To the contrary. While competitive pressures and conflicts with the Western world (Roman world) are surely to heighten, Bible prophecy as well as other developments observable today suggest otherwise. It is strange twist of fate that Asia as a region possesses so little resources and energy reserves in comparison to other parts of the world. The vast abundance of the worlds resourcescertainly so when measured on a per capita basisis found elsewhere. This is a structural reality of the world. It means that an awakening Asia, as it seeks to attain the prosperity levels of the U.S., Canada and Europe, is sure to test the limitations of commodity supplies. This has already been the case to date. Particularly, as the populous countries of India and China raise their overall consumption levels and become integrated into

support an army of young men of eligible military age in excess of 200 million. Not only would population growth already be in decline, the average age of males would push far past the ideal military service age. If so, then we are presented with a possible time constraint. We could argue that the large army foreseen in Revelation 9, if it is to be centered in Asia, is an event that must fall in the nearer future. If Asian populations are aging, time is running out. (However, as mentioned in Part II, Scripture does not allow us to conclude with full certainty that this large army of mounted troops must come entirely from Asia, though we certainly see developments today that would align with such a conclusion.) China and Asia Continue to Advance? For several reasons, we have emphasized China in our investigation. Firstly, it is crucial to realize that the Chinese have an inordinately large influence on the entire Asian region. Not only is China the largest trade partner with many other Asian countries, a large percentage of major businesses in southeast Asia are owned or controlled by Chinese families. Though a minority ethnic group in Asia (outside of China), they are its main business people. The Chinese diasporas, triggered by political unrest and wars of the late 19th century and the middle 20th (the time of the Great Revolution and victory of Mao Zedong) spread a Chinese business network across the entire region from Malaysia to Indonesia. These large business empires have directed much investment to China in recent decades and have made a large contribution to the economic rise of China. Secondly, China, either individually or in concert with other Asian countries, has the ability to challenge America and other Western countries. China itself may have less inhibitions in destabilizing the current world order, as it is much more than a big country, inhabited by many Chinese, as

world trade, it will stress commodity supply channels, not to mention worsen pollution. Just think: Were China alone to ever attain the same per-capita automobile ownership as America, it would mean that the entire auto fleet of the world would at least double. Imagine the rise in demand for iron ore and other resources, especially hydrocarbons. Obviously, such a boom is not likely to occur without causing economic stresses for the entire world. As such, there are a number of reasons why key Asian countries also face some challenges in the decades ahead. Another hurdle, as mentioned, stems from the fact that birth rates have fallen dramatically over the past two decades in China (and also Asia generally). At some point this will cause economic difficulties, as there will be insufficient young people entering the workforce. Moreover, in hyper-stimulating its economy to high growth, China has resorted to manipulating its currency as well as its monetary affairs. For example, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has forced state banks over the past two years to create the largest lending surge in history. This is foolhardy. The ultimate result of these policies will be disastrous. No country has ever escaped the consequences of credit bubbles. Therefore, we can reasonably conclude that Chinas boom cannot continue indefinitely. A Dried-Up Euphrates: What It Means Two prophetic accounts we have reviewed in our study of Asia involved the Euphrates River. A key difference between these references was that it was dried up in the one account (Revelation 161), while no mention of this is made in the other (Revelation 9). Yet, it is specifically this drying up of the Euphrates that is stated as causing (or facilitating) the crossing of the Kings of the East. Just what could this drying up of the Euphrates imply? It may be a symbolic indication. Consider that the imagery of dried

up water is found elsewhere in Scripture. It comes up in at least three contexts: describing actual natural phenomena, as imagery of divine intervention,2 or military boasting. Naturally, a dried up river or sky would represent famine and drought. Rivers were the economic basis of agrarian societies, certainly so in Mesopotamia and Egypt. A dry river therefore implied dying livestock and failed cropsan economic depression, in other words.3 To dry up a river was also considered a military technique of conquest and boasting.4 The overthrowing of Babylon by Cyrus of Persia is one the most well known demonstrations of using the technique of a dried up river (in this case, by diverting the river) to military advantage. Sennacherib, King of Assyria, apparently boasted that he dried up the river of Egypt with the soles of his feet (2 Kings 19:24). We are left speculating about the question of what a dried up Euphrates could signifythat the river becomes literally dried up, or that the region suffers economic depression? We embrace both interpretations. Indeed, the flow of the Euphrates is much slower today due to many hydroelectrical developments. However, a river today, whether dry or swollen, is hardly an obstacle to mechanized armies with capable engineers. Therefore, the literal drying up of the Euphrates River is not needed to allow the incursions of the Kings of the East. Rather, it is more likely that the drying up is meant symbolically as an economically difficult time.

tioned, the nation of Hodu (India) had already existed, as the book of Esther confirms. Crucially, therefore, we discover here that none of these large and influential Asian nations will be part of the last-day rulership represented by the 7th head of the beasts shown in Revelation 12, 13 and 17 the 10 kings. What light could this information possibly shed upon our times today? Without a doubt, there indeed will be Kings of the East that fulfill their action as described in Revelation 16:12, confirming their existence at that time. However, these nations will be dominated by the 10 kings, as the 7th head that they represent is the final power that then has dominance over the entire world with the Antichrist (See Daniel 7). Beyond the certainty that these nations will not be part of the world ruling order at the time that the Antichrist takes over global control, we can only attempt a few additional speculative conclusions. A scenario that appears plausible is that the formation of the final 10 kings may very well be a counter strategy to the perceived threats or non-aligned perspectives of other global players, these very possibly being the Kings of the East who are growing in power. There is no doubt that China is strategically placed geographically, allowing it to become a naval power that can control much of Asia. A number of geographers and geo-strategists have long thought this to be the case. As it happens, China today has sharply increased its spending on its naval capabilities. Scripture seems to indicate that the Kings of the East are shown to be an opposition force, certainly an aggressor. They rise up, crossing the Euphrates River against an unknown enemy. The catalysts may be economic or geopolitical. The 10 kings, on the other hand, come together to collect power to then give it to the Antichrist. The Bible tells us that,
Whatever the case, as we will next show, neither China nor Asia collectively will come to dominate the world either economically or geopolitically.

One More Key Mention of Asian Countries in Prophecy There is one additional verse in the Bible which applies to some key Asian countries today that can easily be overlooked. It is found in Revelation 17:12, which supports an important deduction. It reads: The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour will receive authority as kings along with the beast. Just how does this verse connect to Asian countries today? We must, of course, first assume that we are indeed living in the very last of the last days. As such, the world today would then be very near the time that the 10 kings are to emerge upon the world scene. The verse we have quoted from Revelation specifically refers to these 10 kings and reveals a crucial clue. John, the Revelator tells us here that these 10 kings have not yet received a kingdom. This means that neither the kings nor their kingdoms referred to in this verse had yet existed either at or by the time that Apostle John wrote the Book of Revelation (approx. 90-95 AD). As such, we can validly draw some conclusions from Revelation 17:12: Any nation today that existed at or prior to the time of Johns prophecy can therefore not qualify as one of the 10 final kings in other words, one of the final 10 nations. If we apply this rule, it reveals that such nations as China, India Persia and others will not be part of the final 10-king world power coalition. China already existed in New Testament times. According to historians, the Han Dynasty, a predecessor to modern-day China, was in power at the time of Johns prophecies. The same may be concluded for the nation of Japan today. As already men30

These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast (Revelation 17:13). It is possible that the specter we see developing in Asia today could very well be the world power dynamic that hastens the formation of the 10 kings. If so, the time may already be very short. Prophetic Significance Cannot Be Ignored What is clear is that certain nations east of the Euphratesrepresented by the Kings of the Eastwill be heading west across the Euphrates at some point. As the Bible uses the word king as being synonymous with kingdoms, the meaning here is more likely to indicate the involvement of entire nations rather than just a contingent of physical kings who are to cross the river Euphrates. Certainly, the world is witnessing developments today that for the first time allow some of the literal interpretations of the prophecies concerning the Euphrates that we have reviewed. These emerging conditions east of the Euphrates can be seen to be in alignment with the events described in Revelation 9 and 16. The emergence of the Kings of the East as is being witnessed today in no way obviates other Bible prophecies. Although we cannot know how God will allow various specific events to play a part, we have certainly pointed to some possibilities. Could a world or regional depression (perhaps represented figuratively or literally by the drying up of the Euphrates) play a role in triggering the prophesied events involving the Kings of the East? Is it plausible that a coalition of Asian nations will initiate an aggression, perhaps for economic, geopolitical, or other reasons such as resource deprivation etc.? The Kings of the East then breach the Euphrates, storming into the lands originally covenanted to Israel. We can only speculate. But one thing is true: Events are accelerating on the world

While it surely is factual and significant that economic and geopolitical power has begun to be more widely distributed around the world away from the Romantype nations (this potentially an important alignment with endtime prophecy), consensus predictions that the Asian nations will dominate the world are not likely to be correct. Popular beliefs rarely are. In the meantime, Western nations (most certainly American countries) have forged relationships with these exporting, consumer-pleasing countries from the Asian continent. However, it is a thin one. It is on a materialistic level only, and in that sense, somewhat of Faustian bargain. As such, religious and cosmic perspectives are radically different. This likely plays an important part in the conflicts that are developing between the major countries of Asia and other nations. With Israel historically, the false-god religions of the children of the east proved to be deadly snares for the Israelites. Israel was often chastised for chasing after the eastern gods. Today, a similar influx of eastern influences is being witnessed in the West. Nations that were historically influenced by the Christian gospel, are willing to fraternize with any and all gods for secular and material gain. As a result, they have become ensnared by foreign gods. Speaking to Israel, Isaiah prophesies specifically with our day in mind. You have abandoned your people, the house of Jacob. They are full of superstitions from the East; they practice divination like the Philistines and clasp hands with pagans (Isaiah 2:6). This indeed is the condition of Israel today. The majority of its citizens are secular Jews wanting nothing to do with the Jehovah of the Torah. Eastern religious influences are epidemic. According to Isaiah, it is for this reason that God forsakes them to the Great Tribulation in the last days.

How Much Public Debt?

Critics of government spending are voicing alarm about the growing national debt. In January, the U.S. public debt was $7.5 trillionabout 53% of the countrys total economic output, also known as gross domestic product (GDP).
By comparison, Japans debt-to-GDP ratio was 192% and Saudi Arabias was 20% in 2009, according to the latest figures available. Economists use the ratio of public debt to GDP as an indicator of a countrys economic health. So what do these numbers mean? Is Americas debt level dangerous? The short answer is, No, but it might be soon. A recent study from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that publicdebt levels become perilous when they reach 90% of GDP. By that point, interest rates may be higher as investors demand greater returns on federal bonds, while massive interest payments detract from key government functions. The interest can get so burdensome that the country cant afford to repair its highways or educate its children or provide other essential services, says Isabel Sawhill of the Brookings Institution. In a deal struck on 16 June 2010 between the European Parliament, the EU member states and the European Commission after almost a decade of campaigning on the issue by environmentalists, the sale of illegal timber will be banned in the EU from 2012. Raw timber and products manufactured from wood such as furniture and floors are covered by the new legislation, with firms now required to perform due diligence and carry out risk assessments of wood products where illegal practices are suspected. In a key move that goes beyond leaving the burden at the level of due diligence, as member states had initially preferred, companies will have to trace such products and raw timber all the way back to the country and place where the wood was originally harvested. The law must still be officially endorsed by the member states and a full sitting of the parliament. If this law is passed, illegal timber will be banned from Europe. The worlds largest market is about to shut its gates to companies profiting from illegal trafficking and forest destruction, said Sebastien Risso, a forests campaigner with Greenpeace.
The EU decision to control the harvesting of timber will have to be adopted by the rest of the world. When all the laws are signed, sealed and delivered, no manufacturer using wood as their prime material will dare to use illegal wood, because if caught, it would deliver a death blow to such a company. Quite naturally, this is another step in the direction of establishing global law. The next step will be enforcement. Nevertheless, with all security mechanisms in place, there will still be sufficient loopholes to cause a black market wood industry to thrive. Thus, the final step will have to be implemented, and that is the mark of the beast. 3854

In rebutting criticism of Brazil and Turkey for the nuclear agreement with Iran, and asking that the emerging powers should be heard in international affairs, the Foreign Minister of Brazil, Celso Amorim, directly accused the United States, China, France, Britain and Russia of thinking they are in charge of the world.
In a direct reference to those of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the Brazilian foreign minister said it remains the prerogative of a small number of countries to make all the decisions for the world. Global decisions are made by a handful of traditional powers. The permanent members of the Security Council had (and still have) the privilege of
giving the letters on issues of international peace and security, said Celso Amorim. Its time to listen to emerging countries, such as Turkey and Brazil, but also others such as South Africa, Egypt and Indonesia, in the serious questions of peace and war, stressed the Foreign Minister of Brazil. The Brazilian minister also said that world decisions cannot continue to be made without hearing more voices. The financial crisis has highlighted the emergence of new actors, replacing the Group of Eight (G8) as the primary forum for discussions and decision-making on the world economy, explained Celso Amorim. The discussions on trade, finance, climate change and inclusive global governance began to be open to developing countries, said the Foreign Minister while concluding that without the presence of countries like China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico, no tangible results would be reached. Russias State Duma considers the need for drafting a law aimed at protecting seas from oil spills, the head of the Duma committee for natural resources, nature management and environment, Yevgeny Tugolukov, said in his comments on what conclusions Russia should make in the wake of the growing environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
Russia realizes its responsibility and does its utmost for the development of offshore fields to strictly comply with the international environmental standards, he said. At the legislative level these issues are given priority attention. At the committees initiative parliamentarians are considering the need for drafting a law on environmental control and protection of seas from oil spills, Tugolukov said. The parliamentarian assured that Russian companies have sufficient resources to ensure an appropriate level of environmental security while carrying out their activities. The push for this into the future has far greater ramifications than some old Australia card. The RTA began compiling its facial recognition database last December. Roads Minister David Borger said it would be shared with other government agencies. While the facial recognition system is in its early stages, the RTA will cooperate with other agencies wherever possible, he said. The RTA already provides information to the police, and will cooperate with other state or federal law enforcement agencies. He said the technology was also preventing fraud and stopping people obtaining multiple licenses. A spokeswoman for CrimTrac said its board of management had granted approval for a project proposal for a nation facial recognition capability.

EU trade commissioner Karel De Gucht has called on China to respect its global responsibilities, saying splendid isolation is no longer an option.
Speaking at a conference in the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels on 6 May 2010, Mr. De Gucht said China must match its newfound economic weight with greater participation in international governance fora such as the World Trade Organization. With size comes responsibility, said the Belgian politician who has recently returned from a visit to China where he met the countrys commerce minister, Chen Deming. Despite the tensions, trade between the two sides has grown over the past decade, with Europe now the primary destination of Chinese exports, while China is the second largest market for European exporters. In 2009, the value of EU goods exported to China amounted to 86.6 billion, while Chinese imports hit 214.7 billion. Reminding the audience of academics and policymakers that today marks the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, ambassador Song Zhe denied China had yet to assume its role on the global stage, and stressed that national sovereignty had to be respected. In view of this article relating to electronic facial recognition and the innumerable other projects around the world, we most certainly recognize the tendency toward the perfect recognition system that is yet to come. Bible readers know that will be the mark of the beast. Furthermore, we need to reemphasize that the often-quoted reports about the chip under the skin are in fact describing
a rather primitive system, which would certainly be rejected by the bulk of the population. Electronic facial recognition is being practiced by virtually all law enforcement agencies the world over. At this point of time, there are probably tens of thousands of scientists who are trying feverishly to be first in producing the flawless 100% identity system of every person on planet Earth.
For this particular method, that seems all but impossible at this time because of the significant change in facial features from the young to old age. Therefore, even if perfected, we do not consider this the final system that would qualify for the mark 3844 of the beast.

China Urges Region to Step Back from Korea Clash

China deflected pressure to censure North Korea at a regional summit, instead urging its neighbors to calm tensions over the sinking of a warship and avoid any clash that could shake Asia. Seoul and Tokyo blame North Korea, whose leader Kim Jong-il visited China earlier, of torpedoing South Koreas Cheonan corvette in March, killing 46 sailorsthe deadliest military incident since the Korean War. China, which is North Koreas biggest trade partner and which fought alongside the North in the 1950-53 Korea War, has declined to publicly join international condemnation of Pyongyang, saying it is still assessing the evidence. The pressing task now is to respond appropriately to the serious effects of the Cheonan incident, to steadily reduce tensions, and especially to avoid a clash, Wen said, standing next to Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak at the end of the summit.

With regard to the Cheonan, China seems confident that tensions will eventually diminish, wrote Stephanie Kleine-Ahlbrandt, the North East Asia Project Director for the International Crisis Group, a nongovernment advisory organization, in an emailed response to questions. Hatoyama said Japan will back Seoul when it takes the North to the U.N. Security Council. But Pyongyang may not bow even if China goes along with such steps, said Kleine-Ahlbrandt. We have seen plenty of cases in which external pressure has not worked on North Korea, she wrote. Genetic Map Disappoints

Ten years after President Bill Clinton announced that the first draft of the human genome was complete, medicine has yet to see any large part of the promised benefits.
For biologists, the genome has yielded one insightful surprise after another. But the primary goal of the $3 billion Human Genome Projectto ferret out the genetic roots of common diseases like cancer and Alzheimers and then generate treatmentsremains largely elusive. Indeed, after 10 years of effort, geneticists are almost back to square one in knowing where to look for the roots of common disease. Oen sign of the genomes limited use for medicine so far was a recent test of genetic predictions for heart disease. A medical team led by Nina P. Paynter of Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston collected 101 genetic variants that had been statistically linked to heart disease in various genome-scanning studies. But the variants turned out to have no value in forecasting disease among 19,000 women who had been followed for 12 years. The old-fashioned method of taking a family history was a better guide, Dr. Paynter reported this February in The Journal of the American Medical Association. In announcing on June 26, 2000, that the first draft of the human genome had been achieved, Mr. Clinton said it would revolutionize the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of most, if not all, human diseases. At a news conference, Francis Collins, then the director of the genome agency at the National institutes of Health, said that genetic diagnosis of diseases would be accomplished in 10 years and that treatments would start to roll out perhaps five years after that. Over the longer term, perhaps in another 15 or 20 years, he added, you will see a complete transformation in therapeutic medicine. The pharmaceutical industry has spent billions of dollars to reap genomic secrets and is starting to bring several genome-guided drugs to market. While drug companies continue to pour huge amounts of money into genome research, it has become clear that the genetics of most diseases are more complex than anticipated and that it will take many more years before new treatments may be able to transform medicine. The last decade has brought a flood of discoveries of disease-causing mutations in the human genome. But with most diseases, the findings have explained only a small part of the risk of getting the disease. And many of the genetic variants linked to diseases, some scientists have begun to fear, could be statistical illusions.

Pre-Adamic Earth Dear Mr. Froese, First, let me say how much I enjoy and learn from the Midnight Call publication! Your answers in the Letters to the Editor section are always precise and scripturally based. However, in the May issue you gave your opinion on the age of the world, and that you thought the dinosaurs extinction was during the flood in Noahs day. May I give you my opinion on that? The following is an excerpt from writing and teaching I have done on this subject: 2 Peter 3:6-7 Peter spoke of two worlds: the then was and the are now. The then was world perished; this is the Greek word apollumi, which means destroyed. There was no life left after this flood (cf. Jeremiah 4:23-26), which was not the case after Noahs flood. This had to have been when Lucifer rebelled (he was already a fallen creature when he entered the Garden of Eden). He had been the anointed cherub, who had been placed in charge of the material universe and its social order (cf. Isaiah 14:12-14, Ezekiel 28:11-17). So, that first world (that then was) was not annihilated even though all life was, but it was restored (Genesis 1:9-10). This restored heaven and earth is what Peter refers to as the heavens and earth which are now. Jeremiah 4:23-26 I beheld the earth, and, lo, [it was] without form, and void; and the

heavens, and they [had] no light. I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. I beheld, and, lo, [there was] no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place [was] a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the Lord, [and] by his fierce anger (bracketed words not in original text). That this was describing a Pre-Adamic Earth can be determined in several ways: 1. The use of the word And in Genesis 1:2 (used 102 times in Genesis chapters one and two to separate the different acts of God). Therefore, the work of God in verse one (creation) is separate from the work of verse two (judgment). 2. The only time the earth has been without form and void (desolate and empty) was before the six days of the regeneration described in Genesis 1:32:3. It had to be regenerated because Gods fierce anger destroyed all life, and caused the earth to become (the word was in Genesis 1:2) without form, and void. The word was is translated became in Genesis 19:26. The word was is from the verb to become (this indicates a previous existence: see hayah, #3 below), not to be. That the earth was not created desolate is because God has set certain

boundaries for Himself, and one is that He cannot create anything except in a perfect condition: Isaiah 45:18, He created it not in vain (the same word tohuw as in Genesis 1:2, desolate; without form). In addition, the word not in the Hebrew language means nothing. God created nothing in a desolate state! 3. Throughout Scripture, whenever darkness was upon the earth, and whenever God will bring it upon the earth in the future, it is always because of judgment. Can we say that the darkness in Genesis is any different? Can we say that there was no light on the Pre-Adamite earth? No, when God said, Let there be light (Genesis 1:3), the word be tells us differently. The word is hayah, which indicates a previous existence. When God declared, I AM THAT I AM (Exodus 3:14), the words I AM are also translated from hayah, so if God existed before, is it not likely that so did light? Furthermore, when we are told that God made two great lights (Genesis 1:16), the word made is asah , which means, to refine, form something that already existed. 4. Jeremiah stated that he beheld after this judgment, no manbirds nor fruitful place (places where vegetation could only grow because of sunlight). Since God created the earth to be
inhabited (Isaiah 45:18), and Jeremiah tells of the cities thereof; and Isaiah, when speaking of this same time of Lucifers judgment spoke of nations (Isaiah 14:12-14); therefore, all this (habitation, cities and nations) would certainly include a social system which was overseen by Lucifer. How then can we resist the knowledge of a PreAdamite earth, which had light and was populated by plants, animals and even mankind? 5. Certainly, Lucifers judgment flood does not compare to Noahs judgment flood: * Lucifers earth was made waste (Genesis 1:2, Jeremiah 4:23). Noahs was not (Genesis 8:11-12, 22). * Lucifers earth was made empty (Genesis 1:2, Jeremiah 4:23). Noahs was not (Genesis 6:17-22, 8:16). * Lucifers earth became dark (Genesis 1:2, Jeremiah 4:23). Noahs was not (Genesis 8:6-22). * Lucifers had all vegetation destroyed; it had to be brought forth again (Genesis 1:11-12). Noahs had vegetation left (Genesis 8:11-12, 22). * Lucifers floodwaters were removed in one day (Genesis 1:9). This was a supernatural work; God rebuked the waters (Psalms 104:5-7). Noahs waters were removed in months (Genesis 8: 1-14). This was a natural work.
* Lucifers post-flood world had no fish left in the seas. There was no sun to sustain life anywhere. Noahs post-flood world had fish left. There was sunlight to sustain life. *In Lucifers post-flood world, in addition to there being no fish, no land animals or fowls were left; all were created anew (Genesis 1:20-23). Noahs post-flood world had fish remaining and land animals and fowls preserved in the Ark. * Lucifers post-flood world had no men or social system left; all perished (2 Peter 3:6), and man had to be created anew (Genesis 1:26-27). Noahs post-flood world necessitated no new creation of animals, fowl, fish or man. So, if we rightly divide the Word of Truth (the Jeremiah, 2 Peter, and other passages), we must come to realize there was a Pre-Adamic world with light, mountains, hills, men, birds, fruitful places and cities that were ruled by Lucifer, the anointed cherub. Lucifer, because of his pride, tainted all that he had charge of and rebelled against his Creator. Therefore, God in His anger used darkness and a flood to destroy that social system along with all the things of that system which He created In the beginning. That brought God to restore the earth and create Adam and new creatures. When the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the wa-
ters (Genesis 1:2), that was the beginning of the first day (verse 5). It was also the beginning of recorded time. Through studying Scripture, we know that it has been about 6,000 years since Genesis one verse two. And we know with certainty there will be antoher 1,000 years to come (the Millennium) for the world that began with the six-day restoration and a day of rest (that of Genesis 1:2-2:3). No knowledge is given to us of how long the Pre-Adamic world existed. Since God does not change, as Malachi 3:6 says and other Scriptures prove, this not changing includes His laws for dealing with His creation. Even if His methods in dealing with His creation did change, would it not seem reasonable to believe that the Pre-Adamic world also lasted 7,000 years? This flood of Lucifers could well have been when the lives of the dinosaurs ended. Of course, scientists who expound unproven facts such as the Big Bang Theory and evolution, believe that the world has lasted many millions of years. To this, we have to say, foolishness! According to the KJV translation, Lucifer had fallen from heaven (Isaiah 14:12). So, he is a non-earthly creation of God. Also, he himself did not directly deceive Eve, but the serpent did, whom Lucifer did deceive. Admittedly, however, I have not studied the issue in detail, particularly due to the fact that the subject is unending. I am consoled with the eternal, sure and immoveable Word of God, which states: Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear (Hebrews 11:3).
Answer: Thank you for your detailed research in relationship to the PreAdamic Earth. I am aware of the controversy this will add to the virtually never-ending debate on this particular subject.
Replacement Theology Dear Arno Froese, Our pastor is doing a study on Revelation and quotes from Dr. William Mounce (the most), but also Kistemaker and Morris. I would like to know how you would describe these men theologically. I know that Mounce and our pastor believe in replacement theologywhich I do not and never will. We live in a small town and have already left our mainline Methodist church, after being members all of our lives. The reason for this was the hierarchy belief system on homosexuality, etc. and all they were trying to promote (that most members know nothing about). So the suggestion that we find another church is not an option. The pastor loves the Lord and his sermons from the pulpit are very good. Its just his interpretation of Bible prophecy

Answer: When you write, Our pastor believes in replacement theology, then he has faith in something he has been taught. When he preaches the Gospel, as you state, he obviously will have to contradict himself repetitiously, for the Bible clearly separates the two identitiesIsrael and the Church. You also write, The pastor loves the Lord and his sermons from the pulpit are very good. That is very important. Using Holy Scripture to feed the sheep would be the key to determine whether to listen to the pastor or not. Unfortunately, the persons you named in your letter are unknown to me. Besides, you already did some excellent research, so my advice is to keep the faith and pray for your pastor.
Spiritual Equality Dear Sir, In your March 2010 issue, Letters to the Editor, was a question concerning women in the church, to which I would like to respond. The Galatians 3:28 Scripture is very clear. There is no distinction in Christ, or after conversion, for only then would you be in Christ. According to this Scripture, there is no distinction in nationality (Greek nor Jew); nor in status (bond nor free); nor in gender (male nor female); for we are all one in Christ. You stated that there were no female priests in the Old Testament, as though to imply that women held no prominent positions then. I humbly beg to differ. Have you ever read Judges 2:16, in that it was the Lord who raised up judges? And in Judges 4:4, we find that God, not man raised up a female to judge her people Israel at that time, meaning that she was in authority over men, which would also answer the question of women being pastors. Deborah was raised up as a judge even under the Law. The Lord showed his approval of her by giving the word to her, to tell Barak when to go to war. He was of a very rare quality, because he didnt mind condescending to a woman when he said, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go. Please notice her reply in that chapter. Allow me to inject here that whereas there were no female
priests, there were not many males either because the priests came from the Levitical priesthood. In addition to judges, also notice Micah 6:4, where the Lord called not only Moses and Aaron, but Miriam as well. Would God use women in the Old Testament, under the dispensation of Law and not in the age of grace and truth, and forbid us not only to preach, but to teach as well? Especially when he spoke through Joel 2:28-30 and then again in Acts 2:17 in the New Testament. The same authority given to men to preach was also given to women. He also includes the status of persons as he did in Galatians 3:28 when he spoke of servants and handmaidens. Why would He pour out His Spirit upon ALL FLESH if females are to keep silent? The Galatians Scripture wold fail in its meaning if females were to be treated differently. The purpose of the Holy Spirits coming was that they would be endowed with power and be His witnesses. He said they would prophesy (preach). There are some women who exercise the gifts that are mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:28. Are these women out of order? Women exercise many gifts other than preaching, so how can they do this if they remain silent? Paul would be contradicting himself in Galatians. And, why is there such a readiness to quote this particular

Scripture (1 Timothy 2) to the exclusion of all the others? There are some who know the Timothy Scripture, but know nothing of the other Scriptures. When there appears to be some contradiction, it is because of not rightly dividing the Scriptures, or some Scripture that would make it all harmonize is missing and can only be given by revelation.

Answer: You must have noticed my quotation of Acts 18:26 and Romans 16:3 to show Priscillas equality to her husband Aquila in the Lords work. The issue here is the office of a pastor; that is the distinct difference. In our Lord Jesus, all are equal, children too, but as children, they are still subject to their parents, who have authority. So the head of the household should be the husband. I would not support a doctrine based on exceptional cases such as Deborah. Barak recognized her spiritual authority as a judge, thus he said, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go. Although born again, we are in our sinful body of flesh and blood; thus, rules and regulations clearly defined in Scripture should be followed in order not to go astray.

Answer: We are living in a continuously changing world. Whether the old times were better than today is a matter of opinion. Blacks, for example, were not so fortunate, neither many Asians. Animals have a soul and a body, but not a spirit. Nevertheless, God cares for them as well, as is evident from the book of Jonah. Also, read Romans 8:19-22, where it speaks of Gods creatures. How God exactly deals with these things is not revealed in Scripture, so I dont think it is spiritually profitable to speculate on these matters.
Palestine Dear Midnight Call, First, is to share with you my enjoyment of your publication. I just renewed my subscription for another year. I feel Id like a few questions answered, not necessarily in the Letters to the Editor. In the article, Prophecy and the Gospel (May issue), under the heading of The Jews and Israel on pages 1516, you discuss the biblical claim that Israel has to the land of Israel, and I, of course, believe they do. My question is, since the Jews abandoned their land in 70 A.D., where will the people of Palestine, the nations and all others that have occupied the land since that time, call home? Dont they have a right to live in a country recognized as their own? Also, I am wondering about the statement on page 16, Even if the Jews had gone back to the land of Israel, etc. I understand that Judea was never totally abandoned by the Jews, even after 70 A.D. Were there not Jews living in Judea constantly after 70 A.D. along with other nations? It seems to me that the land was providing for whoever was living there at the time. Why would have they starved if the migration had begun before 1948? These are questions that keep coming up as I read your publication. If you can provide me some answers, Id appreciate it. If you cant, I realize that

Answer: The people who have lived in Israel since 70 A.D. certainly have a right to continue living there. But they must subject themselves under the prevailing authority, as was the case before Israel was reestablished as a nation on 14 May 1948. It is significant that the land of Israel remained virtually barren for almost 2,000 years, and only started to experience a dramatic change when Jews came back to the land of Israel. Wikipedia lists five large-scale immigration movements to the land of Israel: 18821903, mainly from Russia 19041914, mainly from Russia 19191923, mainly from Russia 19241929, mainly from Poland and Hungary 19291939, mainly from Germany Because the largest group of immigrants were communist educated, they established the kibbutz communes. This resulted in a significant increase in the production of agricultural goods for the larger population of the land. While the land of Israel was able to provide food for a small number, it could not do so for all the newcomers to the land. Literally, prophecy had to be fulfilled to accommodate the large influx of people:
Anti-Israel Dear Editor, Not every American is turning against Israel. I am a Christian and I follow all events and issues regarding Israel. I am appalled at Americas recent stand that seems to be alienating my country against Israel, of which we were one of the greatest allies! When our president openly snubbed the Israeli prime ministers visit, walking off and leaving the room as well as canceling a dinner, I was shocked. When the nuclear arms reduction meeting took place and Israel chose not to participate, I understand why! Answer: When it comes to the nations and their position relating to Israel, we have to analyze this from biblical perspectives. Israel never had and never will have an ally. What the Bible says is decisive. Here is a summary what God thinks of all the nations of the world: All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity (Isaiah 40:17). We must always keep in mind that the god of this world, Lucifer, rules the nations. However, he cannot go beyond what God permits. The U.S. and all other nations vehemently oppose Israels possession of the Promised Land. Most nations agree that Israel should exist, but only in a limited territory. Never will the nations agree to the borders given by God in an unconditional covenant with Abraham, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates. It is important not to mix biblical truth with politics. Whether it is President Barack Hussein Obama or his predecessors, they all agreed to Israels limited existence, but never to the possession of all of the Promised Land. MC

n the 25th of June 2010, we gathered at the Beulah Baptist Church in Hopkins, South Carolina to bury the body of our brother, brother-in-law, father, grandfather, uncle and fatherin-law, Manfred Bliesner. The Bible says, Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). Manfred Bliesners faith in the accomplished redemption of Jesus Christ made the above promise a reality for him personally. He became a new creature. With the burial of his body, all things are become new. This new person, the spirit-soul, has separated from the body and is in the presence of Christ the Lord. This corresponds to the Scripture that says, Absent from the bodypresent with the Lord. Where is his residence now? First Corinthians 2:9 gives us an answer: Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. Therefore, any and all imagination will fail to understand the position, condition or location of the place prepared for them that love God.
BRIEF HISTORY
It was in August 1965 that Manfred Bliesner returned to the United States (where he had previously lived) from Germany on the ship New Amsterdam, sailing to New York. It was the same ship in which Arno Froese made his trip to the United States. That was the first encounter of these two people. A few years later, Arno Froese married Manfred Bliesners sister Ruth. Together, they founded Midnight Call Ministries in the United States. We are grateful to our Lord who has used Manfred Bliesner to significantly support Midnight Call Ministries in the early years of development. Manfreds guidance contributed decisively to the moving of Midnight Call from Hamilton, Ohio to Columbia, South Carolina in 1978. Brother Manfred also served on the Board of Directors of Midnight Call Ministries for many decades. We who remain will greatly miss his physical presence. We also take this opportunity to express our deep thanks to the entire family, relatives, friends, and supporters who have prayed for the grace of God to be evident during the last days of his life and in the life of the family. We do well to consider the admonition found in Psalm 90:12: So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. MC
