4or the followin$ methods to wor#, some researchers claim that ma$nesium or ma$nesium hydroxide 77 "$(O+)- 77 must be present in the startin$ material. (.ince the Boilin$ &old method is effective without any ma$nesium, this claim will need to be tested.) .ea water already has "$(O+)-, so you don't need to add it to sea water. 1ry your water first. If you don't $et any precipitate, you mi$ht add a teaspoon per $allon of Dpsom salts to the startin$ material for its ma$nesium. If you do add Dpsom salts, the ma$nesium from them will be a lar$e portion of the precipitate.

I use a LARGE stainless steel soup pot that holds about 20 litres. Boil the sea water thoroughly to sterilise it. I often use H2O2 Hydrogen !ero"ide to #lean it too. 2nd Step/ I put the soup pot with lid out on $y bal#ony to #ool off. If you %R&'% the (uality of your seawater) these steps #an be dispensed with. rd Step/ *on Rubber Glo+es and safety glasses. It prote#t against spilled or stray Lye ,-aOH 'odiu$ Hydro"ide.. /hy0 Lye in your eyes will blind you1 Ha+e proper prote#tion. !repare your 2laboratory3 area .. #o+er surfa#es that are #os$eti# with newspaper and get all your 4things5 lined up.
Ha+e your ele#troni# pH tester at hand) your Lye solution $ade up) ,'ee below. your dropper or syringe) a large plate or tray for it all to be on) and if you are using an ele#troni# pH tester) $a6e sure that you ha+e #alibrated it for a##ura#y on the pH s#ale using the suppliers pH calibrating fluids so the ph $easuring is a##urate. %he Lye 'olution7 Espe#ially wear eye and hand prote#tion for this step. 8ust on#e getting Lye in your eyes and per$anent opa(ueness happens. ,Blindness in that eye.. /e don3t want that) do we) so prote#tion is ne#essary1 Get a 9ar that holds: Option ; or Option 2 ;< 2=0$l and fill it with water.

E+ery drop will #reate a $ini 2#loud2 of pre#ipitate for a $i#rose#ond and then disperses. EEE! '%IRRI-G1 And pour it in ; drop at a ti$e with a $i#rose#ond between drops to lessen the possibility ,I understand. of raising the lo#al pH that pre#ipitates out salts of the hea+y $etals .. &-*E'IRABLE and %OFI@11
EEE! '%IRRI-G so the flow of drops are in separate fro$ the last drop. ?o+e your hand as you apply the drops) so they are apart fro$ ea#h other. Eeep adding Lye li(uid by dropper or syringe and test e+ery DG= dropper loads until you get the hang of it then test less often if you ha+e a degree of #ertainty about the pH being below ;0. On#e it gets abo+e ;0) I test $ore often. It used to be (uite #ostly until I bought an ele#troni# $eter. Resear#h the best one to buy) for the one I ha+e re(uires (uite a bit of #alibration ti$e ea#h ti$e before starting. 'o$e pool pH $eters are a+ailable on eBay I a$ infor$ed. I ha+e not tried the$. 4th Step/ Ha+ing ?O'% of the #lear water #leanly poured off without disturban#e of the pre#ious pre#ipitate) settle the #ontainer ba#6 down and add so$e #lean fresh water. I use R<O water ,Re+erse Os$osis. but you #ould use other filtered or distilled. Horget the paranoid ra+es about distilled water lea#hing $inerals in this #onte"t as there are HEA!' of $inerals in this potion. !ut the lid ba#6 on and lea+e for another A hours. 5th Step/ 2nd !our M /ash Repeat step Q. /hen you are doing pourGoff) noti#e if any 2trails2 of wispy $aterial try to 2es#ape2 with the #lear water and stop the 2pour2 before it gets away. %his is an or$us ri#h $aterial. &se the 22nd pouroff water or ; st wash water2 on your plants inside and outside. 'o$e people ha+e deter$ined the Ath wash is not re(uired. ?y last bat#h) I only did D washes and it was fine. Jou will lose so$e Or$us with ea#h wash as it es#apes a little bit with the washing water. So"e people li7e it salty## so consider it a 8taste9 "atter# I don3t do less than 2 full washes unless I a$ sending so$e to people in the post espe#ially internationally.. in whi#h #ase I send it with only one wash.. still reasonably salty. .ome people have $otten Cuite sic# from consumin$ m7state made from sea water collected at a marina. 1his water contained hi$h levels of lead and other contaminants. Other people have $otten Cuite sic# from consumin$ m7state materials which were made improperly. 1hese materials were made without the use of p+ test paper or meters and the
resultin$ material contained toxic metals. %lease remember that old p+ paper can become inaccurate. %eople have $otten sic# from consumin$ m7state materials which contained bacteria because they were not sterili0ed or stored properly. It is possible to brin$ the p+ of your source material up too Cuic#ly, especially if you use lye in too hi$h a concentration. 1his could result in local areas of very hi$h p+ within your solution. 1hese hi$h p+ areas could allow toxic metals to precipitate and mix with your desired precipitate. "7state platinum mi$ht be considered toxic by some since it ma#es you Cuite ill if you consume alcohol. No one has reported this effect from consumin$ m7state from sea water. .ome people have used 1eflonK coated aluminum sauce pans for heatin$ lye or lye water. 1he 1eflonK $ot scratched and the aluminum started dissolvin$ in the lye water producin$ hydro$en $as which could have exploded. 1he liCuid was contaminated with aluminum which is a poison.
