Introduction
This document describes the best practices for upgrading Vblock Systems to the current software releases in the same release family. This document includes a list of the Vblock System components and the sequence of the upgrade procedure. These upgrade instructions apply to the following Vblock Systems: Vblock System 700 family Vblock System 300 family Vblock 0, Vblock 1, Vblock 1U System
This document also provides the approximate time that is required to upgrade each device and outlines strategies to minimize system downtime. Make sure that you understand the entire upgrade process before you upgrade the Vblock System. Complete all of the planning and preparation requirements before you begin the upgrade.

Upgrade prerequisites
Prerequisite tasks
Review the release notes and complete any required actions. Ensure that the appropriate security policies are applied to Vblock Systems. Upgrades do not modify Vblock Systems security. Note: Baseline security standards for Vblock Systems are available in Vblock Systems security documents. For more information, see Accessing VCE documentation.
Plan for the upgrade. Calculate upgrade time. Schedule adequate downtime for system maintenance. Ensure that all safety checks have been completed. Confirm that all components are in a ready state with no alarms.

Upgrading the data protection system that contains EMC Avamar and/or and Data Domain
You can upgrade the Vblock System Data Protection solution that contains EMC Avamar or EMC Avamar and Data Domain independently of the Vblock System. It does not matter whether you upgrade the Vblock Data Protection solution that contains EMC Avamar or EMC Avamar and Data Domain before or after you upgrade the Vblock System. Make sure that no backups or restores are running when upgrading the Vblock System Data Protection solution that contains EMC Avamar or EMC Avamar and Data Domain. For information about upgrading the Vblock System Data Protection solution that contains EMC Avamar or EMC Avamar and Data Domain, refer to the EMC Avamar Administration Guide. For information about upgrading EMC Data Domain, see the DD OS 5.1 Administration Guide on my.datadomain.com. Note: Authentication is required to access these documents.
