Offer it Up!
(MY OWN PERSoNAL EpIpHANY)
Maria Antonette D. Pasquin
everal days after the Christ-Child was born, three wise men came to offer their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrhh. This day became known to the Christian world as the Epiphany. The momentous occasion also announced to the outside world the birth of the promised Messiah, through the word-of-mouth declarations of these three wise men among their kins on their return to their respective homelands. Who knows how many transformations of heart were born among the Hebrews and among these three wise mens kins who had for many centuries been awaiting the birth of this promised Messiah. Together with the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrhh, these transformations of heart are also gifts to the Christ-Child, perhaps more valuable and unquantifiable. Today, Christians over the world can also celebrate their own personal Epiphanies, offering to the new-born ChristChild their own personal transformations of heart on their journey of faith to holiness. My own personal Epiphany on this new year began when I saw the movie Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir with my parents. We entered the almost empty cinema with only some five people watching the movie, At first, I was amused by the thought that unlike others who were queueing in other cinemas showing Vice Gandas or Bimbys movie, I was here to watch a film biography. I later realized the deeper implication of such reality I was seeing at that time: nowadays, more and more people would rather take for granted what could nourish their souls and instead seek the relative happiness brought by mundane entertainment and pleasure. I could not deny this fact because, I bet, I would also have been one of those people queueing for another movie if only we were not required at school to watch the film of Pedro Calungsod. Idolatry, lust, jealousy, hatred, anger, betrayal - these were just some of the many illnesses of man depicted in the film and which the missionaries, like Pedro
Calungsod, wanted to heal by introducing Christ to the natives of Isla de Ladrones, the barbaric Chamorros. All the sacrifices of the mission of Pedro, with Fr. Diego and several other lay persons, were truly heroic. As depicted in the film, as long as one has steadfast faith in God, nothing can really be deemed impossible. No wonder Pedro Calungsod became a saint, and was canonized last October 21, 2012. He truly proved to the world that it is still possible for the youth of today to step up and make a positive change. Perhaps the youth of today like me think that it is impossible to follow in the footsteps of our very own saint Pedro Calungsod. We always have the wrong notion that the path
to holiness is only for those who are in to the priesthood and religious vocations. Come to think of it, isnt everyone called to holiness? You and I belong to Christs family, for He himself has chosen us before the foundation of the world, to be saints, to be blameless in His sight, for love of Him, having predestined us to be His adopted children through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his Will (Eph 1,4-5). We may think we are too young and incapable of doing extraordinary things, but wasnt Pedro Calungsod also young when he responded to His vocation? To tread the path to holiness, we may not necessarily start with something big or heavy. Each small step can be a springboard towards

he Jaro Parish Youth Ministry (JPYM) helped establish a ministry for children here in our parish. We invited children, 10 to 13 years of age, to sing during the Viva Parol. However, only the Barangay Tabuc Suba Proper responded to this invitation. The experience has helped the children a lot. It is a good idea to reach out to these children and train them on stage. Children can as well play and at the same time offer their talents to God. This has inspired the youth because of the challenge to wake up early every morning. This sacrifice has become an enjoyment while preparing for their presentation.
The children also participated in the Christmas Presentation last December 24, 2013 as they sung Christmas Carols. Also, they joined the choir at 6 pm Mass last December 29, 2013. They enjoyed singing and they have fun. They bear this in mind: Go, dont be afraid and serve. Pope Francis words were very clear: You are a gift and a treasure in the Church! Always convey the power of the Gospel! Do not be afraid! Always feel joy and enthusiasm for communion in the Church! (Angelus, 19 May 2013).
Be Realistic. Dont set goals that are too hard to achieve. Youll get discouraged and possibly stop trying if you dont see enough progress. Set Incremental Goals. Instead of deciding to lose 25 pounds, make your goal to lose five pounds. When you lose that, set another goal to losefive more pounds. Learn Something New. Taking a class to improve your skills or trying a new exercise class can help you advance at work or lose more weight.

few days ago, I opened the gifts I received from one of my Masses. I was blessed to receive many presents and one of them is a gift pack which contains Avon Products such as lotion, deodorant and powder. (Thanks to the giver you really want me to look good and smell good!) Modesty aside, since I couldnt use them all, I decided to give some to the beggars here in the Cathedral compound. When they opened the gift, they were so glad. They told me, Ay salamat gid Father, maka-pamulbos na kami sini. I responded, Ngaa, nagapamulbos pa kamo haw? Abi ko wala na kamo tion mamulbos. Ay, huo padre siempre nagapa-gwapa man kami And we were laughing. Their smiles revealed how happy they were because they have experienced Gods goodness and generosity. As we celebrate the Solemnity of Epiphany today, we rejoice because God manifests Himself through His incarnate Son, Jesus Christ, to all peoples especially the Gentiles (non-Jews). Just as God has revealed His immense and salvific love to us, we in turn are called to manifest this love to the people we encounter in our lives, like my experience with the beggars here in our Cathedral compound. Pope Francis would exhort us
always to go to the streets. For what? To roam around and enjoy the beautiful scenery? I dont think so! When we are called by our Holy Father to go the streets, he challenges us to go out from our comfort zones and meet people who are perhaps ignored, ostracized, maltreated and unevangelized. Our encounter with them can be an opportunity to make them feel and experience the immensity of Gods love and the genuine care and concern of the Church for them.

Our Holy Father in his Apostolic Exhoration, Evangelium Gaudii, would say, I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security. He also added, I do not want a Church concerned with being at the center and then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures.
We can be agents of epiphany! We can demonstrate Gods love and reveal His abiding presence to others especially the poor and the needy. And we can also experience Gods love through them in return. May we respond to Pope Francis call for hands-on service to the poor and spiritual healing for alienated Christians and homeless families. ---ooo000ooo--We would like to commend the Parish Social Action Ministry for taking the initiative of making a survey of old and bedridden indigents within our parish, with the desire to reach out to them in the near future. If not for this initiative, many of our infirmed senior citizens could have been just forgotten and die without receiving their spiritual and even material needs. This effort can be an epiphany at its best! ---ooo000ooo--I would like to encourage all the faithful especially the parishioners to follow the column of our beloved parish priest, The Pastor Speaks. Let us allow his thoughts and sentiments to lead us to reflect deeply upon the events of our parish and to guide our attitudes and behavior so that there will be order and harmony among us.
our goal. We can start by repenting of our sins, going to Confession, and asking God for the forgiveness of our sins. It would truly be a great way to start 2014 right. We can then sanctify our lives by doing ordinary works in extraordinary ways. Offering each task we do every day to our Lord - doing it to the best of our ability with constant prayer is already a way to holiness. We may just be sweeping the floor or washing the dishes but if we are conscious of the presence of Christ in our lives, we can certainly strive for holiness. We may at first encounter challenges like the temptation of mediocrity or laziness, but as long as we ask God for the fortitude to be able take up our daily Cross, we can make it through the day. It is also important that we always bear in mind that the carrying out of our little duties for the day is our act of love for God. Such love for the infinite goodness of God should always be our source of strength especially in facing difficulties. In that way, we dont only

hristmas break is one of the foreseen events of the seminarians of Jaro. Aside from vacation they spend time with their family and serve at Masses. Fifteen seminarians from Theology and Philosophy Department joined their new parish priest in a dinner last December 27 at the Jaro, Cathedral. During the event, the seminarians introduced themselves one-by-one to Msgr. Gene, after which he gave his message welcoming the seminarians and encouraging them to persevere in their formation to the priesthood. He added that this event is a good venue for seminarians to nurture their vocation to the priesthood. Furthermore, seminarians should look at their priests as older brothers because this is an on-going journey of vocation. In response, the seminarians thanked their older brothers, the priests, and the parish for continuously to inspire them to persevere in their vocation to the priesthood. This occasion is an opportunity for priests and seminarians of Jaro to gather and celebrate Christmas together. In one way or the other, this is a simple celebration that will nurture the seed of vocation among the seminarians of Nstra. Sra.

ANILA, Dec. 31, 2013 Pope Francis yesterday appointed Bishop Marlo Peralta of Alaminos as the new Archbishop of Nueva Segovia in Ilocos Sur. Peralta, who was consecrated a bishop in 2006, replaces now retired Archbishop Ernesto Salgado who just turned 77 years old last month. Salgado had served the archdiocese with a population of 718,000, around 85 percent of which are Catholics, for eight years. Peralta is 63 years old, born on July 13,
1950 in San Carlos, Pangasinan. He was ordained a priest at the age of 25 in 1975. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI appointed him Coadjutor bishop of Alaminos on Jan. 14, 2006. He became bishop of Alaminos by succession on July 1, 2007. No date has been set for the installation of the new archbishop. (CBCPNews)

Square. The Swiss Guard band played hymns as the Pope greeted some of the thousands of people gathered at the Square. Just a few hours later, in 2014, he re-emerged at the Basilica to lead the Mass of the Solemnity of the Mother of God. In his homily, he asked Catholics to entrust their journey of faith in the new year to Our Lady, the mother for all. New Years Day continued with the Angelus. Pope Francis greeted the thousands of pilgrims that filled St. Peters Square. The Pope referred to his message for the World Day for Peace. He said the best way to avoid violence and conflict is to build fraternity between all men and women. He mentioned a letter he received from a man describing a personal tragedy. In it, the writer asked the Pope what happened to the hearts of humans, to lead them to war and conflict. Pope Francis ended his New Years Day with a private visit to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where he prayed before Romes patroness. That was his seventh visit to the Basilica in his 10-month papacy. Sem. Fremar Silva also expressed how happy he was to be assigned at the Cathedral because of the community of priests who support each other. At 12 midnight, they ended the prayer singing the traditional hymn, Auld Lang Syne while greeting one another with a warm brotherly embrace. Of course, New Year will never be complete without a Media Noche after a New Year toast proposed by no other than Archbishop Angel Lagdameo. Priests have also their own way of enjoying themselves. While others are blowing torotots, some would light pasirit and others would play on balloons , sat on them until they eventually blow up. Our Parish Priest, Msgr Higinio Velarde thanked all who came over, and Archbishop Lagdameo concluded the gathering with his short message and final blessing. The Parish has given simple presents to those who attended along with the looked forward gift from the Archbishop. Those who attended went back to their places of assignment with smiles on their faces for such a wonderful experience of family among the company of their brother-priests.
o you also wonder how priests celebrate New Year? While this occasion is surely a family gathering for Filipinos, then how about for priests? Well, like many others, they too spend it with their families, their family of brother-priests. It has been many years since they started to celebrate New Year together. Priests assigned in Jaro Cathedral, Archbishops Residence , St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary and St. Joseph Regional Seminary would gather together to welcome the New Year. Each one of the participating communities take turns in hosting this yearly event. This year, its the turn of the Parish to host the occasion. As thanksgiving for all that have been, they started the activity with Holy Hour at the Legion Hall, from 11:00 pm - 12:00 midnight. Fr. Cirilo Camus was tasked to share about his life as a priest. He narrated the highlights of his experiences, lessons and resolutions. He

is nobody more forgiving and more considerate than God. The Lord knows that we are only human and that we are weak. He knows that we have pitfalls and so He is giving us the chance to go back to His graces through prayer. Let us throw away our pride and make piety and humility as our maintenance medicine. We must not claim to have a complete knowledge of our Religion. We have to understand that we need each other in order to be saved. If we are ashamed to go straight to God, let us ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom, knowledge and intelligence that may give us the code of salvation. We understand this, but, if we do not have the wisdom to apply them, we will go the wrong way. Pray to the Holy Spirit for wisdom to understand Gods commandments and the Words of the Gospel. Let us pray the Rosary daily and ask for the Blessed Mothers intercession so that we will see the path of salvation in every decade. Let us go to Mass as often as we can and understand the Gospel. We can even pray as we travel. Let us always keep God in our hearts and pray to Him that this coming New Year will see a positive change in our lives. We must remember that every moment is making us older. The activities we are having are simply entering us so that we cannot feel the hardening of our bones and the wrinkling of our skin. Nobody can say that he can out live any other human being. As we cross the thresholds of another year, let us build a new horizon of trust in God and a love for our neighbors. Let us change the map of our journey. Deviate from the road of bad inclinations and follow the path of devotion to God with prayers as the radiant light that leads our way. Forget vices. Practice neighborliness and positive values that can strengthen communities. Remove the clouds of selfishness and scatter the drops of charity and compassion. Throw away the seeds of jealousy and plant the beautiful stalks of community building. Let this coming New Year put a smile on the Lords face and inspire Him to wave His hands of protection over us keeping us away from sickness and plagues closing our eyes to destructive practices opening our eyes to the glories of heaven making us desire to live an eternity with Him when we leave this world moving around the choirs of angels singing praises for all eternity beginning with Happy New Year this Year!

As if these two national disasters were not enough to grieve us, cases of drug addiction came into view. From the smallest barrio to the biggest metropolis, crimes committed by drug addicts are made known by newspapers, radio broadcasts and other forms of communications. During Christmas people rejoice Because its mall sale for food, clothes and toys Plenty of the latest tech cellphone or tablet And its time also to change the old TV set. People like to wear when New Year comes Clothes with polka dots as lucky charm On the table are round fruits at 13 each To bring fortune and make us rich. The air is rocked with deafening explosions The sky is lit with blinding color fusions New year is greeted with lots of madness Everyone is happy, theres no room for sadness. But lost in these traditions are the spirit Of Christmas and Jesus Christs Birth Of New Year and the hope it brings The coming of our Redeemer, the King of all kings. And so I hope that people will understand How Christmas and New Year can be grand Renew our faith and remain hopeful For He has come, Jesus Our Lord and Savior!

ng pagsuksok sang sotana sang aton mga pari sa ila pagtuman sang ila balaan nga buluhaton isa sa mga butang nga ginapamatukan sang iban nga indi mga Katoliko. Nga-a kuno nagasuksok sila sini? Ara man bala ini sa Bibliya?
