W
hy am I so sure? Because editing the pages
of our Fresh Start issue convinced even
me to change in lots of small but good ways.
Thats saying something: Im a creature of habit
who has eaten a peanut butter and jelly sand-
wich for breakfast every weekday morning for
more than 10 years. Yesterday, I scrambled some
eggs with veggies insteadan Ali Sweeney
move nabbed from page 70. My throat didnt
close; the world didnt end; in fact, my scramble was delicious
and I wasnt hungry for lunch until a shocking-for-me 1p.m.
Why is change such a hard sell for most of us? Maybe we should
take lessons from our kids, who cope with constant transition
and even thrive on it. (Theyre amazingly tough: I once read that
if adults had to go through teething, wed need narcotics for the
pain.) A few weeks ago, I found myself in the cafeteria of LaGuar-
dia Arts High School with hundreds of other parents, waiting
while our children auditioned for a spot in the ninth grade. LaGuar-
dia inspired the movie Fame, so the kids carried instruments,
drawing portfolios, tap shoes, whatever they needed to
express themselves as budding artists. By the time we
left, the line of prospective students stretched down
several blocks. Just looking at those barely-teens, eager
to try out for their next act, recharged my hope battery.
Grown-up life doesnt come with regularly scheduled
change; that, my friends, is what January is for. Accord-
ingly, our Fresh Start issue is stocked with hundreds of
ways to improve your body, your fnances, your mood.
At least one of them will make you say, What a great
idea. Im trying that. It also comes with three incred-
ible new Team Red contributors: Youll get ftness advice
from cover celeb Alison Sweeney (her feature starts on
page 68, and her column begins next month), home-
decor inspiration from HGTV star Emily Henderson,
and personal styling from Tracy Reese, the brilliant
designer who dresses everyone from our First Lady to
your chicest friend. Welcome, ladies, and thanks for
reminding us that change is fun.

GIVING THANKS
In What Hes Really Thankful For
[November], Aaron Traister thanked his
readers. I want to thank you, Aaron, for
sharing your perspective with us every
month. You make me laugh, and make
me appreciate my husband and my
kids, and even myself. Sometimes I
wonder, Does my husband think that?
and I show the column to him.
The answer is sometimes yes, often
no, but youve inspired us to have
a conversation we may not have had.

My husband and I were
staying the weekend with
my in-laws. We left our
open suitcases on the
floor of the guest room
and headed to the living
room for cocktails with my
in-laws and some of their
neighbors. A while later,
to my horror, my mother-
in-laws dog entered the
living room dragging a
pair of my skimpiest black
underpants. I tried
pretending they werent
mine, but my mother-in-
law loudly said to me,
Oh, she must have been
in your suitcase!

how familiar I looked.
We continued to chitchat
throughout my
appointmentonly
to realize that she and
my mother had worked
together for almost
10 years. Our personal
connection made
the rest of my very
intimate appointment a
lot more awkward.

The four most flattering
dresses
These styles showcase your figure
and hide your flaws (without radical shapewear), says
designer Tracy Reese, our fabulous new style coach.
Dresses are my go-to,
because the right ones
make it easy to get ready in
a hurry. You instantly feel
confdent, sexy, and like
your best self. Im pear-
shaped with chubby legs, so
I love a ft-and-fare: A full
skirt downplays my bottom
and lets me skip Spanx. But
frankly, that style looks great
on all body types, as do the
three other miracle workers
on the next page. The right
ft lets you have some fun;
try colors that accentuate
your eyes or skin. A playful
pattern always makes me
happy, and thats the sign
of a good outft.
This
dress is so
comfortable.
It shows
my curves
but doesnt
feel skin-
tight.

1 Flattery trick: Ruching
Gathered fabric drapes forgivingly over full hips and thighs and a

The shadow trick that
brightens eyes This gets them looking
big and twinkly, swears Mally Roncal. And its beyond easy.
START WITH A
SHIMMERY EYESHADOW
Bare skin naturally reflects
light, so you want to coat your
lids with a shadow that has
some sheen to it. Choose a
neutral color, like champagne
for fair or olive skin or gold for
dark skin. Sweep it from your
lashes to the brow bone.
DEFINE THE CREASE
As you get older, the skin on your
brow bones droops, which
makes you look tired. Blend a
matte taupe shadow (use brown
on darker skin) into the crease of
your lid: The flat, dark color
creates a shadow that will give
your eyes the illusion of a lift.
LINE YOUR
TOP LIDS
Eyeshadow
without
eyeliner never
looks quite as
good. And if
you use a
brown pencil,
the efect is
really subtle.
Draw a thin
line along your
top lashes,
sketching it in
little dashes,
then use your
finger or a
cotton swab
to blend.
FINISH
WITH
MASCARA
Brush it on
your top
and bottom
lashes for
extra eye-
widening
power.
DO A LITTLE ON
THE BOTTOM
Take the same shadow you
applied in your crease and
brush a light amount under
your lower lashes. This also
makes any pufiness less
noticeable.

I am not the most organized
person in the world when it
comes to doing my
accounting. So when I was
decorating my ofce, I knew
I needed a catchall for
receipts and important
mailthe stuf that stacks
up in discouraging piles.
The answer: two clear plastic
wall fles that I prettied up
with paint. They hide the
chaos, but the lettering is
clear so I still have an idea of
whats inside. Pick your
favorite colors; I started with
a cool mint green, then chose
white because it contrasts
nicely with the navy blue of
my walls (try Sherwin-
Williamss Dark Night).
Apply your letters:
Measure the file so you can
center the stick-on letters
that youll paint over and
peel of later. I used two-
inch vinyl letter stickers
from OficeMaxtheyre
only $4.99 a pack.
Create a center line: Roll
1/8-inch art tape ($2.99 at
OficeMax) diagonally across
the file, going over the letters.
This way, you ensure theres
a straight line between the
paint colors, and it will be
see-through like the letters.
Time to paint: Afix a piece of
painters tape and paper over
the art tape so that only the
top half of the file is exposed.
Spray-paint this half and wait
for it to dry before removing
the tape and paper. Repeat the
process for the bottom half.
Remove the letters: Its so
important to use tweezers
you dont want to scrape of
any of the paint with your
nails. Then follow the
directions on the file to hang
it on your wall, step back, and
admire your job well done.

Make your salad healthier
and yummier The key is adding farro, a
deliciously nutty grain full of protein. These salads satisfy
Carla Hall, even when shes starving. Youll love them too.
Carla is cohost
of The Chew and
the author of
Cooking With Love.
I cook up lots of farro this time of year: Not only is it nutritionally awesome, but its
really flling and has a great neutral favor thats a blank canvas for anything. I like to
make a big batch and eat it for days. I think the reason so many people quickly fall of
the healthy-eating bandwagon is because theyre taking all of the goodies out of their
diet. Not with these saladstheyre a little sweet, a little salty, cheesy, and so delicious.
Farro salad with mint, peas,
and feta cheese
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
2 cups farro, rinsed
3 tsp salt
2 cups peas (fresh or frozen)
Juice and zest of 1 lemon
cup extra-virgin olive oil
tsp freshly cracked
black pepper
red onion, thinly sliced
1 cup crumbled feta cheese
cup fresh mint leaves, torn
1. Combine farro with 2 tsp of
the salt and 6 cups water in a
medium pot. Bring to a boil;
simmer until tender, about
30 minutes, stirring
occasionally. Add peas during
the last 4 minutes of cooking
and cook until tender and
warmed through. Drain farro
mixture and spread on a baking
sheet to cool.
2. Meanwhile, whisk together
lemon juice and zest, olive oil,
pepper, and remaining 1 tsp
salt in a large bowl. Add cooled
farro mixture to bowl along
with onion, feta, and mint;
toss. Serve, or store airtight
in fridge up to 2 days.
Makes 6 servings. Each
serving: 415 cal, 16 g fat,
16 g protein, 56 g carb.
Fennel and orange farro salad
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
2 cups farro, rinsed
3 tsp salt
2 oranges
cup extra-virgin
olive oil
1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
1 Tbsp honey
tsp freshly cracked
black pepper
2 small fennel bulbs,
cored, thinly sliced,
plus 2 Tbsp top
fennel fronds
2 cups baby
arugula, packed
cup crumbled
Pecorino Romano
2 Tbsp chopped
parsley
1. Combine farro with
2 tsp of the salt and
6 cups water in a medium
pot. Bring to a boil;
simmer until tender,
about 30 minutes,
stirring occasionally.
Drain farro and spread on
a baking sheet to cool.
2. Meanwhile, juice 1 of
the oranges and add juice
to a large bowl along with
olive oil, mustard, honey,
pepper, and remaining
1 tsp salt; whisk to
combine. Cut away the
peel and pith of the other
orange. Working over
the bowl, cut along both
sides of each segment
to release the segments
into the bowl.
3. Add fennel slices and
fronds, arugula, Pecorino
Romano, parsley, and
cooled farro to bowl; toss
to combine. Serve, or
store airtight in fridge up
to 3 days.
Makes 6 servings. Each
serving: 405 cal, 13 g fat,
14 g protein, 62 g carb.

Jennifer Lawrences cropped-in-back,

versatile. By layering the front and sides,
you can wear your hair tucked back,

keeps things feminine, says Tommy
Buckett, celebrity hairstylist for Garnier
Fructis. Best of all, you dont need a brush:
Just use your fngers to blow-dry, he
says. The cut works best on naturally
straight or wavy hair, Buckett says, and
soft, wispy edges all around are key.
Layer up to look
younger
Jennifer Garner has great hair to start
with, but that all-one-length cut
dragged down her face. Layers and
side-swooping bangs raise her hotness
factor, plus they create a natural
shape that makes this efortless
to style, says Jen Atkin, hairstylist for
Clear hair care. Simply brush
the bangs into place and let your
hair air-dry. Anyone with straight
or wavy hair can use this cut,
but Atkin cautions that if you have a
round face, go with blunt bangs.

Start fresh
with a pixie
Maybe it was decades of peroxide
damage that led Pamela
Anderson to lop of her hair
but whatever the reason, she
looks phenomenal. Now her
cheekbones, lips, and jawline
seem delicate and defned,
Buckett observes. This choppy
pixie works on most hair
textures, except for very coarse
or curly hair, he says. Just make
sure the edges are piece-y and
that you keep some bangs so the
style doesnt look too boyish.
Embrace your
natural texture
Wow, her hair looks so much
softer and shinier, says Atkin of
Thandie Newtons au-naturel curls.
And wed argue they make her
seem younger, too. For lovely,
defned ringlets like these, spread a
drop of leave-in conditioner
through your damp hair to ward
of frizz. Then, working with
just the pieces around your face,
twist them in small sections
around your fnger to shape and
smooth the curls.
Make thin hair
look fuller
Fine hair like Reese
Witherspoons can sufer from
what Buckett calls stringy weigh-
downespecially if you color
your hair, which dries out the
ends. By snipping them of into
a blunt cut that hits just below
the collarbone, Reeses hair
seems thicker and healthier and
has more bounce, says Buckett.
This style is just as fattering on
fne curly hair, and the side-
swept bangs make it sexy.

Celine Dion is a crack makeup artist.
Heres proof: She does her own makeup
before every concert. The lady knows what
shes up to! I asked Celine, who calls
the process very relaxing, how
her lipcolor lasts through hours
on stage. First I dab foundation
on my lips, then I
fill them in with
pencil, then I
put on lipstick,
she said. Her
other clever tip:
Nude lipstick
looks gray in
certain light, so
instead, she says

direction.

For great
lashes, turn
up the heat.
This is what I learned
from reader April
Versace of Bensalem, PA,
who says: I heat my lash curler
with a blow-dryer for 20
secondsenough to get it
warm but not scorchingbefore
curling my lashes and putting on mascara, and
it really makes the curl last. I tried it out with
my trusty Sephora Collection eyelash curler (above,
in Amethyst, $17), and its aces. Who else has a
brilliant beauty trick for me? Submit
your best secret at redbookmag.com
/readerbeautytricks. The winner will be featured
on my pageand will win a $250 AmEx
gift card. Five runners-up will each get a
$50 gift card. (See page 119 for details.)

Black tea revitalizes your skin. The insanely youthful Lev Glazman,

Mastering shimmery
shadow is all in the brush.
I know, sparkly eyeshadow
can be a bit scary. But
Chanel makeup artist Kate
Lee, who glams up stars
like Anne Hathaway,
showed me that if you use
a natural-bristle brush
(instead of synthetic), it
goes on softer and lighter.
Still nervous? Sweep it
only along your lash line
to make your eyes gleam.

You can make your haircolor last
twice as long. Water oxidizes and fades
your colorthats a fact. Fight it this way:

To reduce fading, work a dollop of Nexxus Color
Assure Pre-Wash Primer, $17.99, through dry hair
pre-shower (25 readers will win it; see page 119 for
details). The serum helps prevent water from
washing away dye moleculesbut not dirt and oil.

Too late for that? The tinted John Frieda Colour
Refreshing Gloss, $12.99, brightens you back up.

Copper in your water can turn your shade
orange or brassy. Pantene has updated its shampoos,
$3.99 each, with antioxidants that remove copper from hair.

Using a clarifying shampoo once a week clears away mineral
deposits that can dull hair, colorist Sharon Dorram told me.
I like Redken Hair Cleansing Cream Shampoo, $14.50.

Look rosy,
not red Winter can bring
a flattering flush to your cheeks
or a whole lot of dryness and
sensitivity. Calm things down with
these pro tricks. BY LISA WHITMORE
If youre suddenly plagued by tight, ruddy, ber-sensitive
skin, thats just the season working its magic. Everyones
face gets drier in the winter, and when skin loses a lot of
moisture, its much more susceptible to infammation and
irritation, says Mona Gohara, M.D., an associate clinical
professor of dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine.
Plus, a few cold-weather culprits can make redness worse.
Theres windburn, for starters, which can be soothed with
a lotion that contains an anti- infammatory ingredient like
feverfew (found in Aveeno Ultra
Calming Daily Moisturizer
SPF15, $17) or licorice root (which
is in Eucerin Redness Relief Daily
Perfecting Lotion SPF15, $15). To
stave it of on bitter-cold days, pat
a little Vaseline on your
cheeks. Then theres
sunburnyes, even in
January. Snow refects 80
percent of the suns rays,
so its like standing by
the ocean, Gohara says.
Make it your M.O. to
wear broad-spectrum
SPF30 or higher on your
face every single day. If
none of that helps, read on.
GOT RED PATCHES THAT
NEVER GO AWAY?
You could have rosacea, a
condition in which the skins
blood vessels are always
dilated, causing chronic

redness and sensitivity, says
Meghan OBrien, M.D., a
clinical instructor of dermatol-
ogy at Weill Cornell Medical
College in New York City. One in 10
American women has rosacea, and it may
be genetic, so if one of your parents had it, youre
likely to, she says. But you can manage it much better than
Mom or Dad did. When rosacea-prone skin gets dry, it
becomes even more vulnerable to irritants, so switch to
more moisturizing skin care in the winter. Use a soap-free,
creamy face wash (try Eau Thermale Avne Gentle Milk
Cleanser, $20) followed by a redness-reducing moisturizer,
like the Aveeno or Eucerin ones we mentioned earlier. At
night, slather on a thick cream that contains ceramides,
which strengthen skin so its less easily irritated. (We like
Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lift and Firm Night Cream,
$69.) If your rosacea doesnt improve, a doctor can prescribe
Mirvaso, a new topical gel thats covered by many insurance
plans. It constricts blood vessels to calm rosacea redness
for up to 12 hours, says dermatologist Ava Shamban, M.D.,
author of Heal Your Skin.
Experts also suggest using makeup thats hypoallergenic
and fragrance-freeor try mineral formulas, which are
gentler overall. A peach or bronzy blush will counteract
red cheeks, and dont be afraid to go bold on your lips. A
strong color, even a red one [like CoverGirl LipPerfection
lipstick in Hot, $6.50], will shift the focus of your skin,
says makeup artist Kimara Ahnert, owner of the Kimara
Ahnert Makeup Studio in New York City.
KNOW THE TRIGGERS
Any time your face gets very warm, like during a hot shower
or a vigorous workout, it can spark a rosacea fare-up,
Shamban explains. Certain foods and drinks, including
anything spicy, cafeinated, or boozy, can also set things
of. Fear not: You dont have to cut out cofee and cocktails.
Just suck on an ice cube immediately after engaging in a
trigger, says Gohara. Itll bring down the redness right
away. Another cost-free fx? Stress-reducing exercises like
meditation and deep breathing, which a number of rosacea
patients report help diminish symptoms like fushing. We
all could use an excuse to slow down and take a breather
more often; do it for your skin and your sanity.

I wanted to make the oversize print more
professional, says Martha Leonard, the
accessories buyer for Dallas department store
Stanley Korshak. She toned it down with a
navy blazer while still pulling out the fun
chain design by echoing it with her gold belt
and the strap of her bag. The results were just
right: Its a classic, polished outft, says
Martha, 56. And the silky shirt and ivory
featherweight wool pants look expensive
together. To add some edge, she threw on
open-toed booties, her current cure for plain
pump fatigue. Theyre just more fun!

Create a color story
It was love at frst sight! says Tanesha Awasthi, 32, of this
shirt. The pattern reminds me of vintage Herms, but the
cobalt details are very current. Pairing it with matching
suede pumps was a no-brainer for Tanesha, while fnding
the right size took a bit more thought. I tell readers of
my blog, Girl With Curves, that a button-down should ft
their widest part. For me, thats my hips, she says. I had
to size up so the bottom button wouldnt pull. Simple black
pants make the outft versatile. Id wear it to a work event,
but its dressy enough for a night out. Proof: After her
husband, Dave, took this pic, they went out to dinner.
Go a little wild
Joanna Hawley, the Philly-based housewares
designer and author of the blog Jojotastic, took this
top on a not-so-lazy Sunday of running errands
and walking her dachshund, Noodle. I chose the
shirt in a larger size for a borrowed-from-the-
boys feel, she says. But with a few buttons left
open, the look is defnitely a little sexy. The
28-year-olds checked Converse kicks are a cheer-
fully unexpected addition. The bright white in both
the sneakers and the top pulls them together, and
the diferent scales keep the mix from being crazy.

li Sweeney is that rare celebrity
who wasnt born with skinny-
person DNA. Shell happily
admit that losing her baby
weight was hellish, she
could never stay slim doing yoga alone, and
she struggled with the scale for years. In her
case, it started as a teenage actress on Days of
Our Lives. In an industry like Hollywood,
it was really hard to deal with feeling like I
was bigger than everybody else, she says.
Thats why she relates to the contestants on
her megahit NBC show The Biggest Loser. She
understands that feeling of being unhappy
looking in the mirror, being embarrassed, and
not wanting to ask for help. So more than a
decade ago, Ali made a decision to overhaul
her lifestyle to a healthier one, and in the
process she dropped from a size 12 to a size 4.
Even more inspiring: The woman takes
no extraordinary measures to look the way
she does. Theres no daily trainer, no person-

Alis rules
I catch a glimpse of her in action when we meet for breakfast
one morning in Los Angeles. Despite Alis insane schedule,
she doesnt look frazzled or tired. Instead, with her hair in a
high ponytail and her eyes lined with electric blue liner, shes
bursting with energy, and I feel like Im chatting with my
most fun girlfriend. Pretty soon, shes drilling down into the
menu, customizing as she goes. While Im scanning through
the list of eggs you can top with Hollandaise, Ali orders an
egg scramble packed with veggies, fresh herbs, and avocado
on top, switches out the toast for low-carb corn tortillas, and
asks for some pico de gallo on the side. It sounds delicious,
so I copy it. (I ofcially decide that I love her when she does
something so few celebs ever doshe pulls out her wallet to
pay for it all. Of course I dont let her!)
Im here to copy more than her breakfast; Im here to adopt
the Ali Plan. As a woman who recently smacked into that slow-
ing metabolic wall also known as 40-something, I can feel my
body telling me its ready for a change. And, superfcially, Id
love to wear my favorite jeans that I can barely squeeze into
now. But I love to eat, so you can imagine my delight when
I see Ali cringe after I use the d-word. Diets are fnite, she
says. They always have an end. Cleanses, shake diets, soup
diets, she says, really set you up to fail when you go back to
your life. Youre not gonna spend the rest of your life having
two shakes a day and four ounces of chicken at dinner. Its not
realistic! The key to her success isnt self-denial, its consistency.
As Ali begins to sketch out her plan, she looks at me almost
apologetically and says, In some ways its sort of boring. I do
the same things all the time. I hope youre a Virgo! Im not,
but for a body like hers, Im ready to act like one.
Eating healthfully for Ali is a habit, literally: Every day I have
oatmeal with blueberries, agave nectar, and cinnamon for
breakfast. Period. For lunch, I eat my carbs and more fll-
ing foods, she says. I usually have quinoa or lentils of some
kind with a salad. For dinner, she keeps it really light. I have
fsh or chicken, grilled, baked, or poached with stock, lemon
wedges, onions, and herbs. And on the side its always lots of
vegetables. Snacks are cut-up cantaloupe, slices of bell peppers,
carrots, or cucumbers. I have raw almonds in my purse right
now, so I always have quick protein, she adds.
Now for my diet, I usually choose salads over burgers, but
I love to indulge. The fsh tacos at my local Mexican spot are
one of my main food groups. Im also not a breakfast person;
Im more of a drink-cofee-until-2-p.m. person. The biggest
mistake people make is having a cup of cofee as a fller, says
Ali. If your bodys telling you its hungry, then its time to eat
something. So I plow determinedly through some morn-
ing oatmeal or egg scrambles with veggies. Then, four days
in, something weird happens: I wake up starving. Which is
good, because Ive noticed that when I eat breakfast, Im not so
hungry at lunchtime that Im thinking, OmigodIwantapizza!
For lunch, Im flling up on kale salads with chicken or turkey
chili. Dinners are poached chicken with stock and a splash of
white wine. Ill be honest: Snack-wise, Im not loving the cut-
up vegetables as much as Ali doesthey sort of remind me
Im on a health kick. But I love warding of hunger with raw
almonds and yogurt with fruit. Just one week in, Im already
feeling healthier, with no afternoon crashes. I step on a scale
to confrm it: Im three pounds down and raring for more.

WEEK 1
:

I cant drink coffee all day long?
Ali exercises four days a week, but she allows herself some
fexibility. Three of those days, she does intense cardio, wheth-
er its going for a run or taking a spin class. On the fourth
day, she sees her once-a-week-trainer, Steve Lee, for a long
workout that might include boxing, body-weight training
like yoga or martial arts, explosive jumping, and kettlebell
lifting. Its torture, Ali says with a laugh, but I love when
youre done and you have a pool of sweat underneath you.
My weekly exercise usually involves a couple of power
walks and a leisurely hike with friends. Bike-riding with
my husband to our favorite spot for sushi and a Sapporo
beerthat counts as exercise, right? I talk to Steve, and he
disagrees. He suggests I do four workouts that include cardio
with bursts of intensity (like a spinning class) or an outdoor
workout that starts with a light run and walking lunges
and builds up to fve sets of sprintsone minute running
full-on, 30 seconds walking. Its daunting. At my frst spin
class at SoulCycle, I just about die and quit before the class
ends. After three of Steves sprints Im actually woozy. But
every time I work out, I can go a little farther, last a little
longer. By the end of the second week, I start to feel like Im
in charge of my bodyits a revelation.
One of the most enlightening things I notice about Ali
is the language she uses when talking about her lifestyle.
Its always positive. She doesnt say, I have to work out
or focus on what she cant eat. She always uses the word
can. Her mind-set is about benefts, not deprivation. Its
a really important mind switch, she says. Like, I used to
hate working out on vacation. I saw it as a punishment. And
its not. Its a gift.
Shes right, so I schedule as many presents as I can
for myself, but when my job gets hectic and I cant ft in my
50-minute workout, I improvise with a 25-minute circuit-
training DVD. Something is better than nothing, right? Its
really important also to understand that if you dont have
time for 50 minutes, the answer is not to do zero, Ali says.
Her other trick: adding in mini-workouts throughout the
day. If shes out for a walk with her kids and theyre goof-
ing of, shell do squats or lunges. If shes watching TV at
night, shell do triceps push-ups or sit-ups. Quality is more
important, she says. Ten push-ups that are correct and
challenging are more efective than 50 that are half-assed.
I feel really good about my
body right now, says Ali.
So good that in the last two
years she ran a marathon
and completed a triathlon.
gonna spend the rest of your life
at dinner. Its not realistic!

WEEK 2
:

My legs are on fire.
fresh start
Thanks to Alis shortcuts, Im getting good at keeping healthy
food on hand. I prep my veggies in advance, and I make
big batches of food to eat throughout the week, like a pot of
turkey chili. But at the same time, I miss biting into cheesy,
gooey, bread-y things. So one night, I cave. I eat a pizza. By
which I mean, I eat an entire medium pizza all by myself.
Theres no way Ali cheats, right? Im the frst person
to give myself an out, she says. Im a foodie. If Im some-
place where theyre famous for huevos rancheros, Im order-
ing them. The key is making sure its the right splurge.
If not, she laughs, I have the buyers remorse of eating:
indulgers remorse.
Some habits are hard to break. For instance, when I throw
myself onto the couch after a long day, I cant help but think
how much happier I would feel with a pint of rocky road
ice cream in my lap. Then its me versus willpower, and its
a fght to the fnish. Ali relates. I used to be a late-night
dessert eater, and I would beat myself up about it. I would
be like, You work so hard all day and now youre eating ice
cream? Where is your willpower, Ali? She credits her TBL
colleague Jillian Michaels for enlighten-
ing her on this. When you crave sugar
at night, its because youre exhausted.
Last night I was standing in front of
the fridge at 10 p.m. and thought, How
did I end up here? I told myself, Youre
tired; go to sleep. So I did.
My healthy decisions have become more
instinctual, and Im inspired to fnd
ways to have fun with them. Instead of
getting cocktails, I play paddle tennis
with my sister, go night hiking with my
friend Patty, and fnally sign my hus-
band and myself up for a salsa-dancing
lesson he bought us as an anniversary
gift. Ali is a big believer in group moti-
vation. I love inviting people to come
to spin class with me, she says. Its
better than going to a movie. You get a
great workout, and then you can hang
out and have a smoothie afterward.
In fact, Im feeling so on target that
when I hit a place known for its pro-
foundly delicious burger, I order it
blue cheese, rosemary bacon, bun, and
all. But I only have a few fries, and for dinner its a crunchy
cabbage salad to balance out my big lunch. I fnally feel like
I get what Ali means by making this a lifestyle.
As for my fnal weigh-in, I can almost hear Ali, as if
shes on TBL, say, Amy. Your current weight is Down
six pounds! Not only did I lose more weight than I thought
I would, but I feel reenergized. My body feels tighter. I have
a new confdence about trying on those jeans. Sure enough,
they button with a little space to spare, but the whistle I get
from my husband is the most gratifying thing of all. Equipped
with ways to reverse years of bad habits, I plan to eat break-
fast, opt for yummy whole-grain salads or lentils for lunch,
and keep my fridge stocked with apples and almond butter
for snacks. Im going to do something physical every day,
even if its just some squats while watching The Good Wife.
When I start talking to Ali about my goals for 2014 and
New Years resolutions, she stops me right there. Im not a
big fan of them, she admits, because just like diets, I feel
like youre setting yourself up to fail. One of the main things
they say about being a parent is you want to set your kids up
to succeed, right? Well, the same thing goes for yourself.
Plan ahead. Arm yourself with healthy options. Find a class
that inspires you. Set yourself up to succeed. I think I just
found my new mantra. Thanks, Ali.

Want to lose
a quick 5 pounds?
At some point, every woman needs to fit
into a dress or return to normal after
weeks of decadent holiday eating. Heres
Alis advice for dropping five.
1
Stop eating earlier in the
evening, like 7:30 p.m.,
she says. After that, steer
clear of the fridge.
2
Work out a little bit
longer, Ali says. Just 15
extra minutes each
day can make a diference.
3
Carry healthy snacks,
like cantaloupe and
almonds. Its harmless
in terms of your calorie count
for the day, says Ali, but it keeps
you feeling full, so youre not
craving junk or feeling like youre
depriving yourself.
4
Drink a ton of water.
It will really flush
through your
system and take out
some of the sodium,
Ali says. Water
thats an easy two
pounds right there.

Its impossible to touch your
toes or scratch between your
shoulder blades.
Being limber not only feels good, it also prevents
injury, helps muscles rebound from stress,
and even plays a role in heart health. The good
news is that all it takes is a little stretchinga
few minutes a dayto start reaping the benefits.
Stretching for a minute or two when you wake
up, and again in the afternoon. In the morning,
try this: Start on all fours; inhale as
you round your back and drop
your head. Exhale as you arch
the upper back and gaze up.
Alternate for a few rounds.
Later in the day: Stand up; swing
both arms overhead, then forward,

5 to 10 times.

Practicing weight-bearing poses in Pilates or

your day. For example, instead of fast-forwarding
through commercials while you watch TV, hold
a lunge by doing a Warrior pose, or get into
Downward Dog position with your palms and heels
flat on the floor, back straight, body forming
an inverted V. That burn you feel is your muscles

Getting small bouts of cardio throughout the
day. You may not be climbing

to 10 to 20 minutes of move ment

You seize every opportunity
to stop moving.
Health experts say that even if you work out
regularly, you cant collapse on the couch the rest
of the time. Staying active as you go about your
dayopting for stairs instead of elevators, walking
for pleasure, gardeningis as important as regular
exercise for your overall health and longevity.
Being physical during your downtime. That
might mean standing up any time youre on the
phone, fidgeting as you watch TV, or chopping
veggies instead of getting the pre-cut kind. Experts
call all this incidental physical activity, and studies
have found it adds up, and can
impact everything from

psoriatic arthritis. ENBREL can be used in
combination with methotrexate in patients who
do not respond adequately to methotrexate alone.
ENBREL is indicated for reducing signs and symptoms,
keeping joint damage from getting worse, and
improving physical function in patients with
moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. ENBREL
can be taken with methotrexate or used alone.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
What is the most important information
I should know about ENBREL?
ENBREL is a medicine that affects your immune
system. ENBREL can lower the ability of your
immune system to fight infections. Serious
infections have happened in patients taking
ENBREL. These infections include tuberculosis (TB)
and infections caused by viruses, fungi, or bacteria
that have spread throughout the body. Some
patients have died from these infections. Your
doctor should test you for TB before you take
ENBREL and monitor you closely for TB before,
during, and after ENBREL treatment, even if you
have tested negative for TB.
There have been some cases of unusual cancers
reported in children and teenage patients who
started using tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers
before 18 years of age. Also, for children, teenagers,
and adults taking TNF blockers, including ENBREL,
the chances of getting lymphoma or other cancers
may increase. Patients with RA or psoriasis may be
more likely to get lymphoma.
Before starting ENBREL, tell your doctor if you:
Have any existing medical conditions
Are taking any medicines, including herbals
Think you have, are being treated for, have signs
of, or are prone to infection. You should not start
taking ENBREL if you have any kind of infection,
unless your doctor says it is okay
Have any open cuts or sores
Have diabetes, HIV, or a weak immune system
Have TB or have been in close contact with
someone who has had TB
Were born in, lived in, or traveled to countries
where there is more risk for getting TB. Ask your
doctor if you are not sure
Live, have lived in, or traveled to certain parts of
the country (such as, the Ohio and Mississippi
River valleys, or the Southwest) where there is a
greater risk for certain kinds of fungal infections,
such as histoplasmosis. These infections may
develop or become more severe if you take ENBREL.
If you dont know if these infections are common
in the areas youve been to, ask your doctor
For people with psoriatic arthritis or moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis
ENBREL helps stop joint pain at work
With ENBREL, Phil Mickelson is back to the things that matter most. The #1 rheumatologist-prescribed biologic,
ENBREL can help relieve pain and stiffness, stop joint damage, and improve physical function. ENBREL was shown
to be effective in 50% of psoriatic arthritis patients at six months. ENBREL is also approved for adults with moderate
to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Pro Golfer,
ENBREL psoriatic
arthritis patient
Phil Mickelson
Because ENBREL suppresses your immune system, it may
lower your ability to fght infections. Call 1-888-4ENBREL or
visit www.enbrel.com. Prescription ENBREL is taken by injection.
Ask your rheumatologist if ENBREL may be right for you.
Have or have had hepatitis B
Have or have had heart failure
Develop symptoms such as persistent fever,
bruising, bleeding, or paleness while
taking ENBREL
Use the medicine Kineret

(anakinra), Orencia

(abatacept), or Cytoxan

(cyclophosphamide)
Are taking anti-diabetic medicines
Have, have had, or develop a serious nervous
disorder, seizures, any numbness or tingling, or
a disease that affects your nervous system such
as multiple sclerosis or Guillain-Barr syndrome
Are scheduled to have surgery
Have recently received or are scheduled for any
vaccines. All vaccines should be brought
up-to-date before starting ENBREL. Patients
taking ENBREL should not receive live vaccines.
Are allergic to rubber or latex
Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant,
or breastfeeding
Have been around someone with chicken pox
What are the possible side effects of ENBREL?
ENBREL can cause serious side effects including:
New infections or worsening of infections you
already have; hepatitis B can become active if you
already have had it; nervous system problems,
such as multiple sclerosis, seizures, or inflammation
of the nerves of the eyes; blood problems (some
fatal); new or worsening heart failure; new
or worsening psoriasis; allergic reactions;
autoimmune reactions, including a lupus-like
syndrome and autoimmune hepatitis.
Common side effects include: Injection site
reactions, upper respiratory infections (sinus
infections), and headache.
These are not all the side effects with ENBREL.
Tell your doctor about any side effect that bothers
you or does not go away.
If you have any questions about this information,
be sure to discuss them with your doctor. You are
encouraged to report negative side effects of

See the section What are the possible side effects
of Enbrel? below for more information.
What is Enbrel?
Enbrel is a prescription medicine called a Tumor Necrosis Factor
(TNF) blocker.
Enbrel is used to treat:
moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Enbrel
can be used alone or with a medicine called methotrexate.
psoriatic arthritis. Enbrel can be used alone or with methotrexate.
ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
chronic moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults ages
18 years and older.
moderately to severely active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic
arthritis (JIA) in children ages 2 years and older.
You may continue to use other medicines that help treat your condition while
taking Enbrel, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and
prescription steroids, as recommended by your doctor.
Enbrel can help reduce joint damage and the signs and symptoms of the
above mentioned diseases. People with these diseases have too much of a
protein called tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which is made by your immune
system. Enbrel can reduce the effect of TNF in the body and block the
damage that too much TNF can cause, but it can also lower the ability of your
immune system to fight infections. See What is the most important
information I should know about Enbrel? and What are the possible
side effects of Enbrel?
Who should not use Enbrel?
Do not use Enbrel if you:
have an infection that has spread through your body (sepsis).
How should I use Enbrel?
Enbrel is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous or SC).
If your doctor decides that you or a caregiver can give the injections
of Enbrel at home, you or your caregiver should receive training on the right
way to prepare and inject Enbrel. Do not try to inject Enbrel until you have
been shown the right way by your doctor or nurse.
Enbrel is available in the forms listed below. Your doctor will prescribe the
type that is best for you.

Single-use Prefilled Syringe

Multiple-use Vial
See the detailed Instructions for Use with this Medication Guide for
instructions about the right way to store, prepare, and give your Enbrel
injections at home.
Your doctor will tell you how often you should use Enbrel. Do not miss any
doses of Enbrel. If you forget to use Enbrel, inject your dose as soon as you
remember. Then, take your next dose at your regular(ly) scheduled time. In
case you are not sure when to inject Enbrel, call your doctor or pharmacist.
Do not use Enbrel more often than as directed by your doctor.
Your childs dose of Enbrel depends on his or her weight. Your childs doctor
will tell you which form of Enbrel to use and how much to give your child.
What are the possible side effects of Enbrel?
See What is the most important information I should know
about Enbrel?
Enbrel can cause serious side effects, including:
Infections. Enbrel can make you more likely to get infections or make any
infection that you have worse. Call your doctor right away if you have any
symptoms of an infection. See Before starting Enbrel, be sure to talk
to your doctor for a list of symptoms of infection.
Hepatitis B infection in people who carry the virus in their blood. If you
are a carrier of the hepatitis B virus (a virus that affects the liver), the virus
can become active while you use Enbrel. Your doctor may do a blood test
before you start treatment with Enbrel and while you use Enbrel.
Nervous system problems. Rarely, people who use TNF-blocker
medicines have developed nervous system problems such as multiple
sclerosis, seizures, or inflammation of the nerves of the eyes. Tell your doctor
right away if you get any of these symptoms: numbness or tingling in any part
of your body, vision changes, weakness in your arms and legs, and dizziness.
Blood problems. Low blood counts have been seen with other
TNF-blocker medicines. Your body may not make enough of the blood cells
that help fight infections or help stop bleeding. Symptoms include fever,
bruising or bleeding very easily, or looking pale.
Heart failure including new heart failure or worsening of heart failure you
already have. New or worse heart failure can happen in people who use
TNF-blocker medicines like Enbrel. If you have heart failure your condition
should be watched closely while you take Enbrel. Call your doctor right
away if you get new or worsening symptoms of heart failure while taking
Enbrel, such as shortness of breath or swelling of your lower legs or feet.
Psoriasis. Some people using Enbrel developed new psoriasis or
worsening of psoriasis they already had. Tell your doctor if you develop red
scaly patches or raised bumps that may be filled with pus. Your doctor may
decide to stop your treatment with Enbrel.
Allergic reactions. Allergic reactions can happen to people who use
TNF-blocker medicines. Call your doctor right away if you have any
symptoms of an allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include
a severe rash, a swollen face, or trouble breathing.
Autoimmune reactions, including:
Lupus-like syndrome. Symptoms include a rash on your face and arms
that gets worse in the sun. Tell your doctor if you have this symptom.
Symptoms may go away when you stop using Enbrel.
Autoimmune hepatitis. Liver problems can happen in people who use
TNF-blocker medicines, including Enbrel. These problems can lead to
liver failure and death. Call your doctor right away if you have any of
these symptoms: feel very tired, skin or eyes look yellow, poor appetite
or vomiting, pain on the right side of your stomach (abdomen).
Common side effects of Enbrel include:
Injection site reactions such as redness, swelling, itching, or pain. These
symptoms usually go away within 3 to 5 days. If you have pain, redness, or
swelling around the injection site that doesnt go away or gets worse, call
your doctor.
Upper respiratory infections (sinus infections).
Headache.
These are not all the side effects with Enbrel. Tell your doctor about any side
effect that bothers you or does not go away.
Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side
effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
How should I store Enbrel?
Store Enbrel in the refrigerator at 36 to 46F (2 to 8C).
If needed, you may store the Enbrel syringe, autoinjector, or the dose tray
for the multi-use vial at room temperature between 68F to 77F (20C to
25C) for up to 14 days.

Once Enbrel has reached room temperature, do not put it back in the
refrigerator.
Throw away Enbrel that has been stored at room temperature after 14 days.
Mixed Enbrel powder should be used right away or kept in the refrigerator
at 36F to 46F (2C to 8C) for up to 14 days.
Do not store Enbrel in extreme heat or cold. For example, avoid storing
Enbrel in your vehicles glove box or trunk.
Do not freeze. Do not shake.
Store Enbrel in the original carton to protect from light or physical damage.
Keep Enbrel and all medicines out of the reach of children.
General Information about Enbrel
Medicines are sometimes prescribed for purposes not mentioned in a
Medication Guide. Do not use Enbrel for a condition for which it was not
prescribed. Do not give Enbrel to other people, even if they have the same
condition. It may harm them.
This Medication Guide summarizes the most important information about
Enbrel. If you would like more information, talk with your doctor. You can ask
your doctor or pharmacist for information about Enbrel that was written for
healthcare professionals. For more information, call 1-888-4ENBREL

Sweet Asian chili sauce
With only about 40 calories per tablespoon,
this thick and delicious condiment

Tomato Bisque
This soup is a serious multitasker.
Its delicious on its own (and so
low-cal, with just 130 per cup), but I
use it as a sauce, too. Mix it with
light sour cream for a creamy
tomato sauce to spoon
over cooked chicken.
Or combine the soup

ground turkey, cannellini
beans, and some grated
Parmesan for a hearty stew.
Seasoned rice
vinegar
This lightly sweetened
vinegar is great in stir-fries,
splashed over steamed
spinach, or straight up as
a salad dressing. I

varieties from

roasted garlic or

Taco seasoning mix
Take it beyond tacos and sprinkle some
into scrambled egg whites for a kicked-up

If you want to know the key to weight loss that lasts, ask a woman whos dropped
25, 50, or 100-plus poundsand kept it off. The no-b.s. secrets these ladies reveal
to their besties can help get your transformation going. BY CHRISTINE RICHMOND
Dont pretend youre not watching
your diettell your friends!
I tell my pals, dont fall into the people-pleasing eating
trap. Its hard to turn down a cocktail when Im
entertaining for work, or to pass on cake at a party. Know
this: Its worth it. I was out getting drinks with a friend
recently, and I didnt want the night to end but I was
stressed about having another round. So I told her I was
on Weight Watchers, and she said, Oh, me too! We both
relaxed and ordered diet sodas instead of high-cal cocktails.
Another friend who Ive clued in about my weight-loss
goals now happily splits meals with me when we go to
restaurants. I also try to suggest outings where eating or
drinking arent the main activitylike a trip to the beach
instead of brunch. No one is going to take care of you
but you. Its crucial to advocate for yourself.
Brianne Halverson, 34, Savannah, GA; lost 20
pounds and has kept it off for more than a year
You need to eat to
lose weight
Whenever a friend is trying to
slim down, the frst thing I ask
her is if shes eating enough.
For me, it wasnt until I
started having three meals
a day plus healthy snacks
that the weight fnally
came of. I used to try to
starve myself to be thin. I
was always looking for the
next diet fad. The moment
I decided to do something
diferent was on my 39th
birthday. I bent down to put
on my shoes and felt my fat
rolls over my jeans, and knew
I didnt want to turn 40 feeling
so miserable and helpless.
I started working with
a registered dietitian,
ManuelVillacorta, who created the Eating Free weight-
loss plan. I told him all the crazy rules I had about food:
no bread, no bananas, no food after 7 p.m. I confessed to
saving up calories by eating nothing but a granola bar for
breakfast and a salad for lunch, and then gorging on ice
cream sandwiches for dinner. Manuel taught me about
the importance of not skipping meals, and how to get
the right balance of protein and healthy fat. Sugar is my
weakness, and if I dont plan out what Im going to eat,
Ill revert to eating crapor not eating at all. So every
Sunday I map out my weeks meals, and I make a big bag
of crudits to snack on when hunger strikes. I dont feel
deprived, and I was able to go from a size 12 to a size 4.
Stephanie Pritchett, 45, Hartford, CT; lost 25 pounds and has
kept it off for six years
The toughest part is getting
to the starting line
I tell friends, dont worry about
making a perfect start, just start
somewhere. In my case, I spent
four months calling the local gym
to inquire about a membership
before I fnally walked through
the door. Every week the
manager would phone me to
say he hadnt seen me
and try to get me to come
in. When I fnally did,
he recognized my voice,
gave me a big hug, and
said, Its time, isnt it?
Ive weighed more than 300
pounds at three diferent
times in my life. It got very
depressing, and I stopped
caring. But after my third
child was born, I couldnt
carry her up the stairs without
getting short of breath,
and I was having
irregular heart

I couldnt make it 500 feet without feeling exhausted,
but every day I took one more step. Then I would jog a
couple feet, feel like I was going to die, stop, and do it
again. Eventually, I started working with a personal trainer
and little by little, I worked up to running a 10K. And
I kept going! When I ran the Chicago marathon for the
frst time, my sister called me every mile to cheer me
on. When I was struggling, she asked me, Do you want to
be fat for the rest of your life? I said no, and she said,
Then meet me at the fnish line! Thats how I keep

Hardships can crush you
or motivate you
In 2006, I lost my husband, Colby, a month before our
10-year anniversary. He was coming home from work
on his motorcycle, and a deer ran out in front of him and
he crashed. It completely devastated me. Telling my three
kids was the hardest thing Ive ever had to do. I was
already carrying extra weight from my pregnancies and
years of unhealthy eating, and then I gained another
20 pounds. In 2010, I had a health scare: A lump in my
leg needed to be biopsied. It wasnt cancer, but it was a
wake-up call: I wanted to be healthy, for both myself and
my kids. Thats when I walked into my frst Zumba class.
I hid in the back in case I needed to escape, but when it
was over, I had all this energy. I felt so joyous, like Id just
gone to a big party. Each time I returned, I got a little
closer to the front. After class, wed all hang out in the
parking lot, talking away. I changed my eating, tooand
the weight started coming of. Now Im teaching my own
Zumba classes. I feel so much better, and I can outrun
my kids! For me, exercise classes have been the best form
of group therapyIm around happy, supportive people,
and were moving and having fun. Marcie Sailor, 36, Albert

Keep your before photos
When youre losing weight, your day-to-day progress
can be slow, and its easy to think nothings happening.
So I tell my friends, dont ditch the fat photos! When you
look at a picture of your former self, its a lot easier to
see what transformation has taken place. On days when
I feel like blowing of the gym, my before pics remind

45 pounds and has kept it off for three years
Shedding pounds changes
your relationships
I warn friends that you might not recognize yourself
when the weight starts to come of. As the pounds crept
on, I had become reserved; I was afraid to speak my mind
because I felt so insecure. In my marriage, I never used
to say anything if something was bothering me. Now I
do. Its been an adjustment for both of us, and bumpy
at times, but were discussing things I used to be too
scared to bring up, like our sex life. And its brought us
a lot closer. Brandi Laughlin, 29, Sachse, TX, who blogs
at mamalaughlin.com; lost 60 pounds and has kept it off for
more than two years
Yes, yoga can help you slim down
I always remind friends that no one can tell you what
will or wont work for you. Three years ago, when I
wanted to slim down, no one suggested that I do yoga for
exercise. But thats what I did. In the past, I didnt listen
to my body. Id get on the treadmill even though I had
back pain because I thought it was what I was supposed
to do to lose weight, and I ended up herniating two discs.
I tried Chrissy Carters Beginning Yoga DVD to help with
my recovery, and right away I knew it was the kind of
workout my body needed. It strengthened my body, and
it helped me really get in touch with myself. As a result,
I began to feed myself diferently, measuring my food
and eating more fruits and veggies. That one decision to
try yoga kick-started everything, and the weight came
of. Tricia Ostermann, 35, Brooklyn, NY; lost 60 pounds and
has kept it off for a year
Approach your body like
you do your budget
Im a numbers person, so I looked at weight loss the same
way I did managing my household fnances. Calories in
/
calories out. I used MyFitnessPal, and for a year I tracked
absolutely everything I ate and my daily exercise. It kept
me accountable. Before, I used to heap food like spaghetti
on my plate and go back for seconds, even thirds. And I ate
desserts and sweets constantly, without placing any limits
on myself. I learned that I didnt have to deprive myselfI
love anything with chocolatebut if I have a brownie, I cut
back somewhere else. The same way that if you splurge on
a new TV, you might spend a little less on, say, clothing
for a few months. You can treat yourself, just not at every
meal. One hundred pounds later, I can say to friends:
This balanced approach works just as well when it comes
to your body. Joy Drager, 33, Coatesville, PA; lost 109 pounds
and has kept it off for a year
Start by forgiving yourself
In November 2012, I hit 421 pounds, my heaviest weight
ever. Ive tried pretty much every fad diet out there: Atkins,
the grapefruit diet, pills. But my journey to better health
really began when I changed my inner monologue from
one that was negative and critical and said Youre not
worthy to one that said, You can do this; you deserve to be
healthy and happy and have love in your life. Ive had to
forgive myself and be kind to myself in order to move
forwardafter all, I cant change what happened yesterday,
but I can change what happens today and tomorrow. I
started by signing up for Weight Watchers and fnding a
pool I could use for exercise. Now the Upper Valley Aquatic
Center is my second home. The water is so relaxing, like a
cushion, and I can move without feeling hot or sweaty or
straining my joints. I love itit feels meditative. Theres no
way to shed the amount of pounds I have to lose and not be
confused by the process at times. My weight has been such
a part of my identity that losing it can feel overwhelming.
Every day I have the opportunity to make choices about my
health. Before, my eating and physical habits were
thoughtless. Now, I pause and think before I decide to put
something in my body or skip a workout. I still have a ways
to go, but my goal isnt to be skinny; its to feel better about
myself, and Im defnitely on that path. Elizabeth Agosto,
34, Hanover, NH; lost 78 pounds and has kept it off for a year

HYS
henever I start the New Year with a plan to overhaul my
bad eating/drinking/living habits, I wake up some time in
March, on the couch with an empty bottle of Jack Daniels at
my feet and a half-eaten honey-baked ham clutched under my
arm. Well, not this year, Mister. Im wising up and scaling
back. Im making super-achievable mini-resolutions thatll
get me of on the right foot for 2012, or whatever year it is.
Maybe some of them will work for your guy too. If not, Ive
got half a honey-baked ham you can have instead.
1. Curse less. Maybe Ill get a jar or something. During a
contentious meeting about funding Philly public schools
last year, I told a representative from the city council that
the state could s--- my b---s. Now Im known for this. I
walk my son to school and women Ive never met are like,
Hey, SMB! So, yeah: less cursing, get a jar.
2. Volunteer at my kids schools more. This might be a
better idea than swearing
at city council people.
3. Write love letters to Karel.
A friend once said I get paid
to write love letters to my
wife, since I say nice things
about her sometimes in
this column. Really? This
is what passes for a love
letter? I can do better. I
started writing because
I was staying at home and I
needed someone other than
a 9-month-old to talk to, but
the person I was writing to
was always Karel. I wanted
to crack her up, and impress
her, and make her weak in
the knees with my words.
Its a job now (a job I love
with readers I love), but
maybe it would make Karel
feel good to be reminded
that she was the starting
point and shell always be
the end point of the words
I commit to paper. And,
yes, maybe my notes for her eyes only will help me get lucky.
4. Stop smoking altogether. I really must get rid of the last
10 cigarettes a month. I dont even enjoy them. If I say that
enough, Ill believe it, so maybe the resolution should be to
repeat I dont enjoy those last 10 cigarettes a month more often.
5. Get the pictures of my kids of the computer. Karel does
stuf with her pictures, like print them and frame them and
use them on social media. Social media scares and confuses
me, but I could print some of mine, Im pretty sure.
6. Go to bed earlier. I dont need to stay up until 3 a.m. play-
ing Fruit Ninja. Fruit Ninja is not worth a day of feeling like
the hair ball my cat just coughed up.
7. Remember that punching a broken dishwasher cant fx it.
In fact, I might go so far as to say punching broken dish-
washers makes them more broken. Save punching for the
gym and call a licensed repairman.
8. Im not gonna diet, but I will eat more vegetables. Maybe
even one of those hip veg-
etables like kale.
9. Organize my desk. Ive
been trying to get my ofce
cleaned up and decorated
for roughly two years. In
my mind, accomplishing
this will signify that I am
an adult. I have been less
than successful. When I
sit at the one uncluttered
corner of my desk, I type as
gently as possible, in fear
that the vibrations will
topple the mountain of
CD jewel cases stacked in
another corner. So Im
going to start with one
thing: Ill take these empty
paper cofee cups and put
them in the garbage. Well
see where that leads.
10. Declare Monday eve-
nings technology-free. If
I can make my Mondays
meatless, I can make them
stufonmycat.com-less too.

Man, I love that websitejust

pictures of cats, but with stuf
on them! Even so, its probably
more important to have a nice
conversation with Karel. Ill be
back tomorrow, cats.
11. Go on a weekend vacation
with Karel. Weve been par-
ents for seven years; now we
need to reconnect as lovers. (I
know lovers sounds gross, but
we can probably only aford to
go to Trenton, NJ, so dont worry,
there wont also be a heart-shaped bed.)
12. Im going to start playing Hacky Sack again. Two reasons: One, I can feel
a midlife crisis coming on, and reliving my youth with pointless pastimes is
better than having an afair or getting hair plugs. Two, Hacky Sack increases
fexibility, which will come in handy on my lovers weekend.
13. No more doughnuts. I cant give up sweets, but I can totally give up
doughnuts. Mostly.
14. No more beer. I cant give up alcohol, but I can totally give up beer. Mostly.
15. Save my temper for people who deserve it. When my family got stuck in
Houston because of a blizzard on the East Coast, the lady behind the ticket
counter did not need to see Angry Aaron. She was having a bad day too, and
doing the best she could. But I know better than to say Im going to be a nicer
guy this year. Im not going to be nicer to the people who are jerks to the people
I love, like the guy who fipped of my 70-year-old mom in a ft of road rage.
That guy, that guy, is why Bad Aaron exists. I resolve to learn the diference.
16. Only go to the ATM once a week. Bank cards and credit cards make spend-
ing my money too easy. So Im going back to cash. Im taking out $60 on
Monday, and if I run out by Tuesday, then tough, Ill need to learn how to do
some old-timey bartering. Perhaps Akosh, the guy who runs the cofee shop,
needs some personal essays written. Would my dentist like a ghost blogger?
17. Eat less bacon. When you eat bacon several times a day, it stops being
special. Lets make bacon special again this year.
18. Get a Roomba. Im burned out on vacuuming, and yet the foor still
needs to be vacuumed. Also, I want a robot.
19. Talk to someone when Im down. I struggle with depression some-
timesnothing too serious, but more than standard man moodiness. Its
hard to get out of a dark place if you cant admit youre in one. This year,
Im promising that Ill talk to someone, even if its the guy behind the
counter at 7-Eleven after midnight. Petes pretty smart, and hes a good
listener, but if hes too busy monitoring the rotating hot dog roaster, then
maybe I can suck it up and talk to a professional. Tony Soprano was man
enough for therapy; so am I.
20. Take more time to appreciate my dog every day, because shes old.
21. Draw and paint more. Did you guys know that I never took a writing
class, ever? Trust me, my editors are unsurprised. I barely fnished an associ-
ates program, but I was an art student. I worked with oil and pastel. I loved
drawing and painting, but somewhere along the way I decided I didnt have
time for it anymore. Why do I think I dont have time for something that
makes me happy? I do, and you do too. This years gonna be better than
doughnuts and cats (though maybe not cats with doughnuts on them).

Age means nothing
The photographer heroine of
Still Life With Bread Crumbs
is nearing 60 and fears her best
work is in the past. The novels
author, Anna Quindlen, doesnt
quite relate: Grayer? Creakier?
Undoubtedly. But I contend Ive
traded sass for smarts, she told
us. And I still have some sass!
Perseverance pays
The documentary If You Build
It follows two designers as
they train teens in the poorest
county in North Carolina to
build things their community
badly needs. The group worked long,
hot summer vacation days to fnish a
farmers market, despite a lack of support
from the school board. Students learned
to see a difcult project through, even
when things didnt turn out as planned.
You may cry by the end, but your stick-
to-it-iveness will skyrocket.
Dare more, live more
The lush scenery in The Secret
Life of Walter Mitty will certainly
trigger your wanderlust. But its
the smaller adventures taken by
a meek Life magazine employee
(Ben Stiller) trying to save his job
and bond with his ofce crush
(Kristen Wiig) that may spur you to
take actionwhether its fnally
taking that class or sticking your
neck out at work.

Everyone
needs a posse
On Killer Women, Tricia Helfer
plays a tough Texas Ranger
who handles sexism as well as
murderers at work. But what
gets her through itand what
makes her so relatableis
her tight friendship with her working-mom sister-
in-law. They are so diferent, but they rely on
each other, Helfer says. As executive producer
Sofa Vergara puts it, This is a series
about imperfect women with balls and
a heart. Our kind of gals.

Kids can be heroes
In a store with his 8-year-old
girl, surrounded by princess
merch, author and History
Channel host Brad Meltzer
thought, I know so many
better heroes. So he created the Ordinary
People Change the World books, which
include true stories from way back when
historical greats were kids (we love 7-year-
old Amelia Earhart building a backyard
roller coaster). Showing them as my
daughters peers helps her see that she is
capable of great things, Meltzer says.

Make a restaurant-perfect omelet With
these chef tricks, yours will come out fluffy and flawless every time.
Add a Bloody Mary and home may become your new favorite brunch place.
Herb and
Gruyre omelet
Learn the omelet-making basics
with these classic fllings, then
experiment with sauted veggies,
diferent cheeses, and meats. Got
some leftovers you dont know
what to do with? Theyll probably
taste delicious in an eggy cocoon.
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
2 large eggs
Sea salt and ground black
pepper
1
/2 Tbsp unsalted butter
2 Tbsp grated Gruyre cheese
2 Tbsp chopped fresh herbs,
such as parsley, basil,
tarragon, and chives
Recipe by Khalil Hymore
1.
In a medium bowl, gently beat the eggs,
tsp sea salt, and a pinch of black
pepper and set aside. Now, prep the rest of
your ingredients: Omelet-making is a quick
activity, so get everything chopped, grated,
and measured before you begin cooking.
2.
Heat a small (8-inch) nonstick skillet
over medium heat. After the pan
has been heating for 2 to 3 minutes, add
the butter. Wait for it to bubble before
adding your eggs, but be careful: If your
pan is too hot, it will dry out the eggs.

A few
more
things you
need to
know
Size matters:
An 8-inch nonstick
skillet is the perfect size
for a two-egg omelet,
which works out to
about 6 Tbsp of liquid.
Dont over-beat
your egg mixture.
Itll toughen the protein
in the whites.
Less is more when
it comes to fillings.
Adding too much cheese
or too many fllings
will prevent your omelet
from folding shut.
The eggs inside
your omelet
will continue to cook
and set even after
youve removed it from
the heat, so its best to
cook the eggs slightly
underdone. By the
time youve flled, folded,
and transferred your
omelet to the plate, it
will be fully cooked but
still moist and tender.
Practice makes
perfect. No ones
frst omelet is a
masterpiece, but with
a little practice your
omelets will look just
like they do in
restaurants. And dont
worry: An ugly omelet
is still a tasty one.
3.
Pour the egg mixture into the center of
the pan, and tilt the pan so the eggs
spread around the entire surface. As they set,
gently stir them with a spatula, pulling the
set eggs up and allowing the liquid to spread
into the pan (there should be no gaps or holes).
4.
Keep scrambling. Doing this allows the
eggs to cook evenly, and it wont afect how
the omelet looks on the outside. You want to
cook the omelet until the bottom is set and the
top is just set but still looks moist, 1 to 2 minutes.
5.
Your omelet is almost cookednow
its time to sprinkle it with your cheese,
herbs, and whatever other goodies
youve chosen. Arent you glad you already
prepped everything?
6.
Using a rubber spatula, loosen the edges
of the omelet. Slide the spatula under half
of the omelet and tilt your pan, letting gravity
help you fold it in half. Gently slide onto a plate.
