Let Me Pose for You!
Spring 2006, right after a Modigliani exhibition at Complesso del Vittoriano in Roma, I started thinking about Jean Michel Basquiat: his
works, his life. Thus, I bought books & artbooks to get a broad general view about the fate of such a radiant child of contemporary art. I
always felt a strong connection with the man, probably because of his approach -one step beyond graffiti writingz - and mixed media
attitude. I shivered when I read about his life more in detail .
At the same time, non-ordinary events were happening. A strange transformation was taking place right there, in front of me. Actually,
inside myself. Surprisingly enough...people, friends, family...they started telling me I was bad-tempered, incessantly talking against the
commodification of the art industry and obsessively speaking about dope. They can hardly understand my behaviour...like this is not the
person I used to know, what's going on, man?You know, I am used to out-of-body experiences, visions and experiences with non-
ordinary realities. But, you know what? You never get used to this kind of stuff. Indeed, the experience I am telling you about has been a
real challenge to me. No kidding!
Jean wanted to comunicate with me. He wanted my help to solve a delicate situation. Jean was asking me to change the end of this
movie called The Life of Jean-Michel Basquiat. At the same time, I was feeling him strongly inside me, I was continuosly channelling
his thoughts, emotions & memories, and it was not an easy task to control him and keep My-Self well balanced. I knew my only way out
was to find the solution to his problems...and pretty quick...because I didn't want to be trapped in a situation with no way out. So I asked
the Divine protection and chose to play the game to the end.
My relationships with people and my emotional balance were getting worse, day by day, minute after minute. Before darkness, before
going insane in de mente, before the tsunami of negative emotions came to get me, I decided to grab an 80x100 canvas and started
painting RUNE symbols, thus creating a dedicated 'field' where I was able to start-up an effective co-operation with Jean. Vedic
Chantings were guiding me to retrieve his soul and mine, too. We were blended together.
His works are power-full. I am aware of dem shamanic potential. His works are desperate. The 'Self-Portrait' he made back in 1982 was
literally disintegrating my positive/assertive attitude toward life for I was feeling under my skin, the same emotions. But this were the
good news. It was the way out to bring my ol' good life back in my hands. Indeed, I understood the starting point was that Self Portrait,
depicting his lil' world of ordinary nightmares at the Annina Nosei gallery. Jean was a creative talent. Jean was an hopeless junkie with
visionary talent, performing the show for the benefit of rich, ignorant hard-nosed riderz know as "art collectors". Nosei was the
corporate manager of such a SoHo-based version of Barnum's circus. Jean was simply a black slave in her white hands..But the point
was how can I invert these dynamics? how can I unlock this mechanism? How Can I Help You, Jean?
In the meantime even my mother was looking at
me really scared. She couldn't recognize me at all.
Time was running up.There were just few days left.
So I was day and night in the atelier until the
painting was done. I was painting inna trance state.
It was a demanding pooja, a ceremony officiated in
several days and nights to retrieve Jean's soul,
solving all the unresolved situations...letting him
fly away in the Skyes.
The mixed-media track left by this pooja is the
work you can see on your left. While in Basquiat
Self Portrait (1982) the arrow is directed
downwards and seems to have a life of its own, in
my version it is well handled and directed
upwards. Plus, here the arrow is silver, not black.
Light not darkness.And I added a luminous halo, as
he used to do in his portraits.
I sealed the canvas with the writing "Jean Goes
Higher". It was my way to tell him everything was
solved in a familiar way, in his own style.
The very moment the canvas was done, all that
heavy energy, that unbearable burden was
dissolved into Vibrating Light. And I finally felt
freed, serene and sincerely empty. Jean, we did it!
Once the pooja was over, the painting was done, I
was knocked out. I slept for a couple days. Then
came back to my original character & behaviour
within a week.People around me felt my evolution.
I felt I did all that I can to help Jean fixin his
Karma. But, you know, this processes are bigger
than me and you. I just played my lil' part of the
game, even if I cannot see the whole chessboard.
Only the Supreme can.
Not surprisingly, I didn't channel Jean, anymore. I
came back to my life as a simple human being.Thank
God.
Months passed, and I was not thinking about such an
experience anymore, when...one day, while I was
drawing with wax crayons on my sketchbook, I did
this uncommon figure you see on your left.
The moment I finished it, I realized it was not a
product of my mind but a message from Jean, straight
from the Other Side. It was his way to tell me he was
fine, he could go through, he came true. In other
words, that the pooja has been successful.
It was a codifed message. A unique way, indeed. I
understood this simple sketch is a different version of
his Untitled (Angel) 1982. An Intuition that guided
me to truly understand the meaning of that painting
coming out from no-where.
I was looking at the sketchbook, and start laughing
with joy. Sincerely. Since that very day, Jean-Michel
Basquiat is always in my thoughts and prayers.
