This test paper has 4 questions and total of 40 marks. It can not be taken from the examination room. Calculators are not allowed. SHOW ALL YOUR WORK. Duration: 50 minutes.

NAME (Please PRINT): STUDENT NUMBER: 1. [10 Marks] Circle T for TRUE and F for FALSE. 2 marks are given for a correct answer; -1 for an incorrect one. T F (a) If the augmented matrix of a linear system has 3 rows and 4 columns, and it has exactly 2 pivot columns, then the system has a unique solution. T F (b) The number of pivot columns of a coecient matrix is equal to the number of basic variables. T T F (c) The Reduced Row Echelon Form (RREF) of a matrix is unique. F (d) If vector u is in R2 and vector v is in R2 , then u + v is in R4 .

T F (e) Elementary row operations may change the solution set of the associated linear system of equations.

(i) a = 0, b = 1; (ii) a = 1, b = 0; (iii) a = 1, b = 1; (iv ) a = 2, b = 0.

(b) Consider the following system of linear equations: x y 2z + w 2x + 4y 3z w 4x 8y + 6z + 2w x + y + 2z w = = = = 1 2 4 1

This system has (i) no solutions; (ii) only one solution; (iii) an innite number of solutions with one parameter; (iv) an innite number of solutions with two parameters.
