Submitted by: Sriram Venkatakrishnan, Section D, Roll No: 2013294

Of all the characters, it is Piggy who most often has useful ideas and sees the correct way for the boys to organize themselves. Yet the other boys rarely listen to him and frequently abuse him. Why do you think this is the case? In what ways does Golding use Piggy to advance the novels/films themes? Overview of Piggy character:Piggy is one among the group of school boys who was trapped in the island. The author William Golding has portrayed him as an intellectual with clear-thought among the boys. In the very first instance, when Ralph another school boy called him to swim, he thoughtfully rejected it. He was suffering from asthma and was taking the precautionary action suggested by his Aunt. He is the one who identifies the conch shell and tells Ralph how to use it but doesn't use it himself. His physical appearance were distinct and made other students isolate him. He was overweighed and bespectacled. Piggy is neglected:Piggy despite being one of the most rational and sensible persons in the island, is often bullied and neglected by the other boys. In the first interaction with Ralph, he did not reveal his real name and told him that in school he is called Piggy. Ralph, who was supposed to be his friend is the one who reveals his nickname to other boys, regardless of being asked not to do so. Another instance, the overbearing character Jack shows no reluctance in slapping Piggy when he accuses him of letting the fire go out and forgoing an opportunity to get rescued. In the next instance Jack used Piggys glasses to start a fire, they cooked food and everyone ate, except Piggy. Even his close friend Ralph didnt share his part of the meat. Piggy first impression on all the other children does not portray him as a leader. One of the reasons for this imprudence of the boys towards piggy could be is physical vulnerabilities. Piggy is overweighed and sluggish. He is intelligent, innovative and smart but he lacks the charisma and communication skills that both Ralph and Jack has, thats why they took the authority. The boys thought he was shy and timid as he didnt talk much to other boys and showed lack of courage from his front. He also refuses to admit that Simons death was murder and refuses his participation Author use Piggy:The author is actually trying to portray the naivety of young boys and what they can resort to if they are left off with no one to control. He send a message about the fundamental propensity in every human being to do wrong unless they are kept in control by force. Probably Jack would not have been so cruel had they not

been stranded in the island. He showcased Piggy as a smart kid as he used to give ideas to Ralph, and is a Jack makes him seem useless and left out. Piggys character is an epitome of perseverance and bravery. He understood the importance of taking a census, while others cant determine how many littluns were killed in fire. Jack symbolizes insanity and savagery while Piggy showed his intelligence in hostile situation. Golding has showed Piggy and Jack as a symbol for Good vs. Evil concept. Piggy is not reluctant to speak out in the public albeit knowing that he would be bullied. He also tries to keep the group focussed to achieve the common goal get rescued from the forsaken island. Unfortunately his words of wisdom are often ignored. On the other hand Jack is more interested in hunting and having fun. He had the leadership ability and was able to control the rest of the boys. Golding used Piggy as a person with more wisdom and lack of leadership qualities, which eventually ended one of the boys pushing a boulder from the cliff crushing his body.
