LESSON PLAN

OPEN TEXT BASED ASSESSMENT TOPIC: Clean Air -A shared Concern Objectives:The theme- "Clean Air- A Shared Concern" ,attempts to help the reader to comprehend the situation in a holistic manner and try to develop the knowledge. To identify the causes of air pollution. To be aware about the effects of air pollution. To examine and analyse the existing status of air pollution. To reflect, debate and generate ideas as to what actions need to be taken at individual ,collective or governmental level to meet the emerging challenges. To develop a generation of students of high degree of open intellectual, effective, creative, innovative activity and fortified by values of belonging to the nature and principles of sound environmental practices that qualify them assume responsibility towards protecting the environment.

Knowledge: Explain various causes of air pollution - unprecedented urbanisation and industrialization and motorisation. - Life style in many developed countries causing serious problems in the form of ozone depletion. Describe various impacts of air pollution on Environment. - Global Warming. - Formation of smog in winter season, eg;-Great London Smog - Depletion of Ozone Layer. - Adverse effects on child's health. - Acid rain, eg; Marble cancer

Explain the various steps which can be taken up at the individual level and governmental level to curb the menace of air pollution. "ACT LOCAL ,THINK GLOBAL".

- Reduce the amount of fuels used in transportation by raising mileage standards, encouraging car pooling etc. - Persuade industries to use cleaner fuels like CNG and LPG instead of coke in their furnace. - Invest in and deploy known renewable energy technologies. - Replace incandescent bulbs with energy efficient light emitting diode light and compact florescent lamps. - Reduction in the use of fossil fuels and carbon containing fuels as much as possible and encourage the use of renewable sources of energy. - Prohibition of entry of heavy vehicles to residential areas and school premises. - Encourage afforestation- create green zones by tree plantation in residential areas and school campuses. - Establishment of industries away from residential areas.

Skills: - Develop skills to identify various causes of pollution.

- Develop skills to use the resources judiciously and wisely. - Develop skills to use alternative sources of energy. Develop skills to take necessary measures to check the health problems caused by air pollution.

Application: Children can apply the knowledge of air pollution, its causes, impacts on environment and measures to be taken to check the problems caused by air pollution in their daily life situations and try to live in harmony with the nature.

Methodology: Lecture cum demonstration method along with the efficient use of
black board and power point presentation help the teacher to explain the topic and convey the message effectively.

Activity:Debate on the topic -Air Pollution

Activity:QUESTIONNAIRE

Clean Air-A Shared Concern

1. How would you rate the overall air quality in your city now compared to last year? Much better A little better About the same A little worse Much worse 2. What do you think are the main causes of air pollution in your city? Please select all applicable. Construction Industrial sources/manufacturing facilities Increasing use of air conditioner Motor vehicles Household cooking and heating Population growth Power plants Smoke of cigarettes Waste disposal Burning of Waste Pollution from other countries Other (please specify) 3. To what extent is the air pollution affecting you? Very much affected Affected a little Not affected at all

4. In which of the following ways are you affected? Please select all applicable. Breathlessness/having more difficulty in breathing Doing less outdoor activities Doing more to look after my skin Doing more to stay healthy Feeling depressed Irritation to eyes/nose/throat Skin problems Wanting to move to other less polluted place Asthma incidences Poor visibility Worrying about the living environment for children 5. Please express how much do you agree or disagree on the following statements. a) Polluting companies should be fined even if it puts some jobs at risk. b)Power stations and factories should switch to cleaner processes even if consumer bills and prices have to go up. c)Government should do more to promote and encourage a better environment even if our taxes have to go up slightly. d) Police should stop and check car emissions more frequently even if it causes traffic delays. e)Improving the environment is the responsibility of every citizen. f)Recycling programs should be put in place and promoted across the whole city. g)I am actively involved in cleaning up the environment. h) The pollution is out of my control and I cannot do anything to change it. i)I do not see the pollution as a problem. j) If I knew how to better contribute to a cleaner environment, I would take action.

Assignment:WORK SHEET 1. What are the health consequences of air pollution? 2. How Does Acid Rain Affect the Environment? 3. What are the challenges countries faces, and what obstacles are preventing assistance in improving air quality? 4. Gwalior and Raipur are the top five critically polluted cities in India, comment. 5. As a student what all actions can you take to make your environment clean. 6. Name some human activities resulting in air pollution. 7. How does acid rain affect Taj Mahal ? 8. A boy baths in the first shower of rainfall during rainy season and his body gets yellowish brown colour patches on the whole body for which he was medicated. (a) Why the skin of the boy got yellow patch? (b) How is it caused? (c) Suggest some methods to reduce it. 9.When is Earth Day celebrated to sensitise people towards Environmental protection? Explain the significance of Earth Day. 10. The Oxygen-ozone balance in atmosphere is maintained by continuous formation and dissociation of ozone. The UV light needed for this purpose is absorbed from sunlight. In this way ozone layer is helpful in protecting the earth from UVrays which can otherwise cause variety of skin problems and damage the DNA mutation. The pioneer work of researchers discovered the depletion of ozone layer. I. II. III. Name the gas which causes the depletion of Ozone layer. Write one consequence of Ozone depletion? How the use of CFC be reduced?

11.The Taj Mahal has been "diagnosed" with marble cancer. What are the doing to stop this? 12. Air pollution-fifth largest killer in India

a) What are the effects of agricultural burning? b) What are the health effects of Carbon Monoxide? c) How can pollution prevention be achieved? 13.Extract based questions The human lifestyle in many developed countries is also causing another serious problem in the form of depletion of ozone layer. The use of refrigerators and air conditioners, fire extinguishers, aerosol sprays like deodorants etc. results in release of CFCs and N2O in the atmosphere which is responsible for depletion of ozone layer. This results in ultraviolet radiations entering the atmosphere unobstructed causing damage to all kinds of life on Earth. a) Expand and explain CFCs. b) Give your opinion for the prevention of such problem.

14. You have noticed fog during winter season, which reduces visibility level and causes traffic problem in cities. From your point of view, what are the basic causes of it and how can it be prevented? 15. It is said that early childhood is being adversely affected due to air pollution. What are the basic causes of it and how can we prevent such a problem from your point of view?
