(CE Projects and Engineering Planning) Course Description: CE 521 (CE Projects & Engineering Planning) Second Semester 2013-2014 This class provides an integrated, realistic application of several aspects of a real-world engineering project for the different major aspects of Civil Engineering. Project Description: To develop and design a ten (10) storey building made of structural reinforced concrete on members such as columns and beams. In addition a reinforced concrete slab will be designed for all building floors including stairs and shear walls (if deemed necessary). Design Codes: For structural steel AISC 2005 as adopted by NSCP 2010 (including its seismic provisions) shall be used, and for concrete ACI 2008 as adopted by NSCP 2010 is a requirement. All analysis and computations that does not comply with the above mentioned code is deemed obsolete and is not acceptable and will be rejected. (This item shall will be strictly observed). General Procedure: Phase I Develop the architectural component of the design which will be defended on a semi-public forum. o Physical Requirements 1. Building must be designed for a minimum of 5 bays x 6 bays. 2. Bay distance, center to center between columns must be within 4 meters (min) to 6 meters (max). 3. First floor clear height must be between 3.5 meters (min) to 5.5 meters (max) 4. Second to ninth floor must be designed in between 2.8 meters to 4 meters (clear height) 5. Provide a roof deck and parapet on the top level. 6. Provide an elevator shaft as well as carefully located stairwell. Designer will decide the type of occupancy and its interior make-up Oral Defense of your proposal (phase 1) will be tentatively set on __________, 2013 (time and venue will be announced later) The oral defense will be graded and will form part of your Prelim Exam Grade. Phase II Transfer the design geometry on a computer software (E-Tabs or STAAD) for final structural analysis (Important: Only provisions on NSCP 2010 will be accepted, not following this instruction will be automatically rejected) Foundations shall be designed with 200 kPa soil bearing capacity and with the following parameters to be considered: o Water table to be located at 5 meters below the natural ground line. o Final foundation design must be acceptable for Terzaghi, Hansen and Meyerhoff equations o Short term and long-term settlements must be checked. o The concept of effective stress must be strictly considered.

Tabulate the final design moment, shear, axial forces, reactions, torsion, deflections, storey drift, seismic analysis result, center of gravity, and section properties. These results will be checked by your instructor and will be recorded as your midterm grade. Deadline of submission for this requirement will be on _____________, 2014. No extension will be allowed. Phase III Perform the CODE CHECK of the design for safety and serviceability (Note: Steel and Concrete will be checked using NSCP 2010 Code only and nothing else. Obsolete codes will not be accepted) The code check will be done by the software. All structural detail including computations on concrete sections, reinforcing bars, bolted & welded connections (for steel structures) shall form part of this report. As soon as the 3rd phase will be checked and approved, the component results of Phase I, Phase II and Phase III will be compiled and bounded (hardbound) for final submission. Deadline for submission is on the date of the Final Exam.
