Summary Information
Course Content
Courses will be available at basic and advanced level in Manual Metal Arc, Oxy Acetylene, MIG, TIG, and advanced level MMA in thin walled sheet and pipe and heavy plate and pipe.

Welding Processes
Manual Metal Arc

DURATION
The duration of these welding courses is 60 hours and all courses are delivered over 10 weeks on 2 nights each week for 3 hours per night. Please note that this is different to previous years. Certification testing takes place on the last night of the course.

Manual Metal Arc Welding is a joining process involving the use of a flux coated stick electrode as a filling material in creating a weld. Either AC or DC current can be used to provide the electrical power during the process. Its primary applications are in joining iron and steels. Metal Inter Gas (MIG) and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding are gas shielded welding processes. MIG uses a continuous filling wire and is most commonly used on plain carbon steel metals while TIG uses a filling rod and is most commonly used on Aluminium and Stainless Steel. Oxy Acetylene Welding uses oxygen and acetylene gas to generate a high temperature flame that is used to melt the edges of the metal to be joined. It is commonly used on steel sheet and may be used in conjunction with a filling rod as required. Brazing which uses a brass filling rod is a variant on this welding process.

FEES
Registration and tuition fees for each course costs 795 for the 2012/2013 academic year and are payable in advance of commencement of the course. Additional fees are payable for completion of ASME IX and EN287 test coupons.

LOCATION
Courses are held in the Welding Workshops at the Department of Metal Fabrication Tungsten Inert Gas

ASME IX

What is ASME IX and why is ASME IX important?

Welding certifications to ASME IX are for use with the ASME boiler and pressure vessel code or the ASME pipe work codes. Achieving this certification demonstrates that an accredited fabricator is capable of working unsupervised on site and can perform a large amount of their own onsite inspection without the involvement of an independent inspection body.

Certification Process
Generally speaking there are a number of steps involved in qualifying welders and welding procedures . 1. The first step involves the preparation of the welding procedure specification (WPS). This is done in accordance with the ASME IX standard procedures by an externally approved company (EIS). 2. The second step includes the testing and qualification of the welder and the certification of the tests for a welders performance qualification. The test process is completed at DIT and the certification is completed by EIS following examination of test coupons. Metal Inert Gas

Specialised Joining include Hybrid Laser Arc welding which combines the benefits of gas and laser arc welding to provide improved penetration and better joints. Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) provides potential for joining of dissimilar metals and has applications in the aeronautical and automotive industries. Diffusion Bonding is used to join dissimilar metals and ceramics.

Overview of Course
This Level 1 welding programme is structured to meet the needs of individuals who wish to gain a qualification in gas or manual metal arc welding as part of on -going professional development. Ideally applicants should be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge and skill level in Oxy Gas or MMA welding though this is not essential. During the course participants will work towards gaining EN287 certification involving butt and fillet welds on plates and pipes. All students should be able to progress to DT040 and DT041 depending on skill level achieved. Total Attendance is 60 Hours; 3 hours/night for 2 nights per week over 10 weeks.

Overview of Course
Applicants to this Level 2 course should some knowledge of welding processes and be familiar with the use of welding torches and using filler wire for creating welds. The course will cover all aspects of safety and also the various processes for welding of thin plate using MIG and TIG for low carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Depending on progress or applicant requirements some people may specialise also on thin wall stainless pipe. All applicants will have the opportunity to complete ASME or EN examinations at an appropriate level at the end of the course. Total Attendance is 60 Hours; 3 hours/night for 2 nights per week over 10 weeks.

Course Fees
The cost of this course for period 2011/2012 is 795, and is payable in advance. Unemployed applicants for the course may be able to obtain financial support from FAS or their local Social Welfare office for the course fees. The Institute will provide an official statement of the course costs on request for this purpose. Please note that a place is only confirmed on the course on payment of the appropriate fee . Examinations fees of approximately 150 must be paid by any participant wishing to take ASME or EN examinations. This is normally paid in weeks 7 or 8.
