Hyde Park History

Pass through Hyde Park during the summer months and you may hear a crowd chanting and the thud of a bass line. Although music concerts are a regular feature of Hyde Park today, the scene 900 years ago was altogether different. The landscape was one of meadows and trees with a stream running through, while deer, boar and wild bulls roamed free. The area's wildlife didn't go unnoticed and King Henry VIII bought the land from the monks of Westminster Abbey in 1537. He cultivated the area as prime hunting ground - with riotous events and banqueting the order of the day. Henry VIII was also the monarch who put a fence up around the land and decided it was a private park. Subsequent monarchs also fell in love with Hyde Park and its Royal status continues today, with public access granted in 1637.

Queen Caroline is the Royal most credited for shaping the Hyde Park of today, with her landscaper Charles Bridgeman responsible for creating The Serpentine lake. Later architect Decimus Burton brought his architectural hallmark to the park.
