Tellabs Interface Module Concentrator 2 (IFC2)

Tellabs IFC2 enables broad Ethernet support with multiservice feature parity for LTE, 3G and 2G backhaul
The Tellabs 8600 Managed Edge System is a scalable and versatile backhaul solution for evolving access networks. It is designed to meet the ever-growing requirements of data hungry mobile users. This LTE-ready platform provides an extensive Ethernet and IP feature set. Simultaneous support of MPLS, TDM, ATM and FR protects previous network investments. The Tellabs 8600 product family is fully supported by the Tellabs 8000 Intelligent Network Manager, which is an easy to use end-to-end network management solution. The Tellabs 8000 intelligent manager minimizes operational and maintenance costs and scales up to tens of thousands of network elements.

IFC2

Main Application
The IFC2 is the next generation Interface Module Concentrator for the Tellabs 8660 Edge Switch and the Tellabs 8630 Access Switch. It can be installed in the same sub-rack with the IFC1 and the ELC1. The Tellabs 8660 switch can be equipped with a maximum of two CDC cards and combination of maximum 12 Ethernet Line Cards (ELC1) or Interface Module Concentrators (IFCs). The IFCs can have up to two interface modules each (IFM). The IFC2 can be used with CDC1-A, CDC1-B, CDC1-SEC-A and CDC1-SEC-B power and control cards. Any available slot in an existing Tellabs 8660 switch or Tellabs 8630 switch can be equipped with the IFC2 card which provides Ethernet features that are required in LTE and 3G networks.

Features and benets

It is possible to replace an IFC1 with an IFC2 with a similar IFM conguration. In this case the existing IFC1 conguration is automatically reloaded into the IFC2. If the IFC1 has Ethernet IFMs, the conguration is reloaded and mapped in the R2 Ethernet IFMs on the IFC2. The IFC2 supports Ethernet switching, and IP- and MPLS-based services such as IP VPNs and MPLS pseudowires. This support makes it ideal for LTE, 3G and 2G networks as it provides an MPLS transport solution for IP, Ethernet, TDM and ATM trafc over a common network infrastructure. In addition to supporting the same feature set as the IFC1, the IFC2 enables enhanced Ethernet features like IEEE802.1ag / ITU-T Y.1731 Ethernet OAM, Ethernet switching and link aggregation. The IFC2 supports the existing multiservice, ATM and POS IFMs and new Release 2 (R2) Ethernet IFMs. Table 2 describes supported IFMs in the IFC1 and IFC2. The combination of the IFC2 and R2 Ethernet IFMs enable smooth migration to LTE and IP/Ethernet RAN.
