Employee Relations in Context (Paperback)

by David Farnham (Author)

1.Book Reviews

Book Description

In this introductory book – written from a managerial perspective – the focus is on the
diffuse roots, complexities and varieties of British employee relations practices. It puts
employee relations into its wider socio-economic contexts and seeks to provide a
framework within which students of personnel and development can identify and
understand the role of management in managing the employment relationship,
contextually, operationally and strategically. The text seeks to be analytical, academic
and rigorous in its approach and emphasises the contingent nature of employee relations
management.Contingency means that there are not only choices and alternative
approaches for management in taking decisions in employee relations, but also
constraints and limitations on areas of managerial discretion in managing employees. In
line with its managerial thrust, and compared with other texts on the subject, this one also
provides opportunities for developing the competency of students, by enabling them to
apply their knowledge and skills of employee relations to practical situations. This
practical approach to employee relations management is underlined by the conceptual,
theoretical and empirical content of the chapters and by the assignments at the end of
them. These assignments require students to do wider reading, undertake activities and
problem-solve real-life issues.

…by far the best textbook in this area on the market today. It offers rich insights into
public sector labor relations from historical, political and legal perspectives. …the book
is extremely versatile. It is well-suited for upper-level undergraduate and graduate
courses in public personnel and labor relations. Yet, because the material is presented in a
scholarly, analytical fashion, it is also an excellent resource tool for persons conducting
research in or practicing public sector labor relations.

…go[es] beyond most other texts in its comprehensiveness and its informed treatment of

Recruitment, Retention, and Employee Relations: Field-

tested Strategies for the ’90s (Hardcover)

“I would heartily recommend this book for the Human Resource professional who needs
a quick, practical proposal of solutions to our current problems. For those of us in the
EAP field with little or no HR experience, it certainly should find a place on our
bookshelves. Otherwise, we risk becoming dated in our knowledge of HR strategy. We
must be able to talk their language. Many of us, of course, are part of the quality
movements within our corporations and can apply many of the concepts to our own
programming.”–Journal of Employee Assistance Research

Book Description

This book documents what some of the world’s most successful and innovative
companies are doing to improve their recruitment, retention and employee relations. The
book is designed to make Human Resources a competitive weapon. During these times of
labor shortages and increased dependence on front-line people to perform their task with
dependability and zeal, it is essential to enhance our ability to recruit, retain and improve
employee relations. World-class companies like Merck, Hewlett-Packard, General
Electric, Federal Express, Motorola, Cypress and PepsiCo share their techniques.

The Evolving Process of Employee Relations
Management (Issues in Work and Human Resources)
(Hardcover)
by Bruce E. Kaufman (Author, Editor), Richard A. Beaumont (Editor), Roy B. Helfgoff
(Editor), Roy B. Helfgott (Editor)

1.Book Reviews

Book Description

This collection examines the evolution of the philosophy and practice of human resource
management (HRM) and industrial relations (IR) over the twentieth century. By
combining history, contemporary practice, and future trends, these well-known experts
present both scholarly and practitioner perspectives. Drawing on in-depth interviews and
surveys with HRM executives at leading corporations, the contributors explore key trends
and issues facing global companies in such areas as equal opportunity, compensation
practices, and expatriation programs. The book also takes an in-depth look at one
particular player in the story – Industrial Relations Counselors, Inc., the first non-profit
research and consulting organization dedicated to improved HRM/IR practices – which
was founded by John D. Rockefeller in 1926, and has played a central role in the
development of key labor legislation including the Social Security Act.

Exploring Employee Relations, Second Edition: An

International Approach (Paperback)

The best feature is the shift towards giving more attention to the influence of the EU,
globalization and a deeper look at the nature of the labour market. I would like to see a
second edition of the text published. After a fallow period, ER is an expanding area of
interest again.
John Kimberley, University of Central England

Generally seems in line with previous text which was quite student friendly, generally a
popular text on the subject. Required reading one of 2 texts recommended for purchase
Leat or Blyton & Turnbull: Dynamics of Employee Relations
Ian Roper, Middlesex University
Yes would meet the needs of the module for which I have been using it a third year
undergrad module on Employee Relations which forms part of a number of different
Business subject degrees. For use in my post grad teaching (part of the CIPD accredited
MSc in HRM) the text would need the additional chapter on handling conflict/industrial
action referred to. The increasing number of international students on both UG and PG
programmes would make a more generic text (as described) useful. Main text for
undergrad ER module approx 100 students per year. Could also be one of number of
recommended texts for PG modules varying numbers. Have been using the first edition
for UG module was planning to change to a more up to date text.
