CASE STUDY Hema Chandra Yelishala Roll number: 36166 DIVISION D (OPERATIONS)

Problem: The recruitment process is not defined properly and which rose to the problem between Shilpa and Riya and she was hired from outside. Protagonist: Riya- Patients service Supervisor Shilpa Gaikwad Sheela Swaroop Guru

Parameters: Requirement of patient service supervisor at the hospital Shilpa and sheela where filled internally Sheela has very less experience and worked for less time in the hospital Riya is an external applicant, riya lost her job 3 months back Guru expected the problems between shilpa and riya Shilpa is not happy because of not being promoted shilpa was not satisfied by the selection process and felt frustrated

Assumptions: Guru might have made a wrong decision in hiring riya because she lost her job Shilpa and Sheela are not fit for supervision role due to lack of skills Transparency was not maintained by Guru as in he didnt explain the roles and selection process Riya and Guru might be known to each other since long time. So Guru favored Riya rather than Shilpa Guru wanted to test shilpa and evaluate her by playing some politics

Possible Solutions: Riya and shilpa should be told their roles and responsibilities which might not create politics Both Riya and Shilpa should know each other and that should be initiated by Guru. So that they work collaborated. Building communication between Riya and Shilpa and removing discrepancies between them would not create problem If things do not turn around, Shilpa could be transferred to another department or could be given more responsibilities in her existing job so that she feels satisfied.

Final Solution: Riya should talk to Shilpa and understand the problem and report it to Guru and find out the skills which are making shilpa incompetent. Riya should try to enrich her skills and explain why she is not been promoted. And design the transparent process which will help the employees to understand the selection process. Contingency Plan: If the final solution doesnt work , if she doesnt listen to accept the changes then the only option available to transfer her or sack her with a valid reason. 1. Should Guru have informed Riya about the internal applicants before offering Riya the job? I dont think it is necessary to inform Riya about the internal applicants before offering job to her. 2. Was meeting with each employee as part of Riyas orientation a good idea? Yes, being a new employee it is good for her to interact with each employee and know there understandings. This would help in creating more bonding and belongingness with the employees and she can listen to the problems associated with them so far. Being an supervisor it is her duty to interact with everyone and know about them on the day of orientation. This would help her lot to understand the problem of Shilpa. 3. Evaluate the agenda Riya used. How could it be improved? As Riya was already informed that even Shilpa applied for the supervision process, and she could have asked the reason to Guru why she is not been selected and as per the reason Riya would have made an strategy to make Shilpa feel comfortable with her job and delighted by her work and responsibilities.

4. How should Riya respond to the issues Shilpa is raising? Riya could have asked guru the reasons for not promoting Shilpa and she could have mentioned some areas to improve and change the hiring process. She could have changed the state of mind of Shilpa and tell her that she is recruited only because of her outstanding performance, she could have also convinced her by saying that she is apt for the role and able to showcase leadership skills and not because of any politics involved. 5. What are some general issues new managers and supervisors may face when assuming responsibility for a new job Issues like not defining the selection process by the manager and changing the hiring process without any notice By not promoting their existing employees to the next level and hiring an outsider for the same. Attitude of new employee might influence on other employees which will create a performance problem for the organization He or she should be aligned with the culture of the organization and know why they are recruited He should be responsible for any challenge and accept it as opportunity
