AdvancedEHFisafollowontotheMilstarsystem,whichcurrentlyprovidessuch services.WhilebackwardlycompatiblewithMilstartoensureconnectivity,Advanced EHFwillmakepossiblemuchfaster,globalandnetworkcentricmilitary communications.

LockheedMartinCorp.,theprogramsprimecontractor,leadsanindustryteamthatis undercontracttoprovidethreeAdvancedEHFsatellitesandthemissioncontrol subsystemtoitscustomer,theMilitarySatelliteCommunicationsSystemsWing,located attheSpaceandMissileSystemsCenter,LosAngelesAirForceBase,Calif. NorthropGrummanAerospaceSystemsisprovidingthesatellitecommunication payloadstoLockheedMartinSpaceSystemsinSunnyvale,Calif. ContractDetails Thepayloadsconsistofdigitalprocessors,antennas,radiofrequencyelectronics, softwareandintersatellitecrosslinks.NorthropGrummanhasdeliveredallthreefully integratedpayloadstoLockheedMartinoneeachin2007,2008andthethirdin2009. LaunchofthefirstAdvancedEHFsatelliteisscheduledfor2010. NorthropGrummanreceivedacontractin2001fromLockheedMartinforthefirsttwo AdvancedEHFpayloads,andacontractforathirdpayloadin2006.

Background TheAdvancedEHFsystemwillserveusersintheU.S.Army,NavyandAirForce,aswell asspecialforces,thePresidentandSecretaryofDefense,andforcesofinternational partnersintheAdvancedEHFprogram. Thehighlyversatilesystemwillprovidetacticalcommunications,suchasrealtimemaps andtargetinginformation.Itwillalsoensureapathforhighlysecurestrategic communications.

Incorporatingthelatesttechnology,payloadsforAdvancedEHFwillprovideabout10 timestheusercapacityasMilstarpayloadsyetcutsizeandweightsubstantially. ThehighlyadvancedtechnologytoflyaboardAdvancedEHFsatellitesincludes: Nullingantennasthatautonomouslydetectandcounterenemysignaljamming, Onboarddigitalprocessing,and Advancedphasedarrayantennascapableofrapidbeamsteering. OneAdvancedEHFsatellitewillprovidegreatertotalcapacitythantheentireMilstar constellationcurrentlyonorbit.Individualuserdatarateswillbefivetimesimproved.The higherdatarateswillpermittwoway,jamresistanttransmissionoftacticalmilitary communicationsuchasrealtimevideo,battlefieldmapsandtargetingdata. Inadditiontoitscriticaltacticalmission,AdvancedEHFalsowillprovidethecriticalsurvivable, protectedandendurablecommunicationstoNationalCommandAuthorityincluding Presidentialconferencinginalllevelsofconflict.
