Reflection of feeling

Reflection of feeling is to identify the key emotions of a client and feed them back to clarify affective experience. With some clients, the brief acknowledgement of feeling may be more appropriate. Often combined with paraphrasing and summarizing. The predicted result of reflection of feeling is the clients will experience and understand their emotional state more fully and talk in more depth about feelings. They may correct the interviewer s reflection with a more accurate descriptor. The first task in eliciting and reflecting feeling is to recognize the key emotional words expressed by the client. !eople are constantly expressing emotions verbally and nonverbally. "eneral social concersation usually ignores feelings unless they are especially prominent. Thus, many of us are trained not to focus on the other person s emotional experience, and may even unaware of what happening before our eyes. #t is helpful to start work on reflecting feelings by establishing list of emotions. The easy way to brainstorm emotional words is by focusing on four basic feelings which are sad, mad, glad and scared. The techni$ues of reflecting feeling is by using the vary sentence stems and sometimes omit them completely, using the client s name and pronoun %you& helps soften and personalize the sentence stem. Then, a feeling label or emotional words is added to the sentence. Then, a context or brief paraphrase may be added to broaden the reflection of feeling. The tense of the feeling is also important. 'nd a check(out may be used to see whether the reflection is accurate. )lients present their feelings with four styles. The styles are sensorimotor style,which the client are embedded in emotion and do not separate self from the experience. Then, by

concrete style, clients can name and label emotions, although they sometimes over simplify. )lients also use formal(operational style, the client can reflect on and work with more complex emotions. *ialectic+systemic style is multiperspective thought is characteristic of this emotional style.
