A Lenten Service Project Christ the King Parish

The time is ripe to truly embrace our faith and our call to be good stewards of the environment and of each other. Doing so will lead to a deeper understanding of our journey toward wholeness. As Christ demonstrated in his journey to the cross, learning to give all of ourselves through relationship with others and the world gives way to our hope realized in resurrection, new life and the fullness of life. The Water For Life project has been an inspiring, collaborative effort between the National Council of Catholic Women and Catholic Relief Services. As a Parish Community, we have chosen to take on this project together. Money donated will provide clean and sanitary drinking water to places that have none. Let us always remember to thank God for the water we have and to conserve this most precious resource. Let us remember in prayer those who do not have water at the turn of a faucet. The donation bottles are located in the narthex of the church near the water fountain and in the Academy building for both Religious Education and Early Learning Academy families.

Year of Grace 2013-2014 What does it mean to have a Mass "offered" for someone?

March 9, 2014

An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: for example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday), or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit ones soul. Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical "Mirae caritatis" (1902) beautifully elaborated this point and emphasized the connection between the communion of saints with the Mass: "The grace of mutual love among the living, strengthened and increased by the sacrament of the Eucharist, flows, especially by virtue of the Sacrifice [of the Mass], to all who belong to the communion of saints. For the communion of saints is simply ... the mutual sharing of help, atonement, prayers and benefits among the faithful, those already in the heavenly fatherland, those consigned to the purifying fire, and those still making their pilgrim way here on earth. These all form one city, whose head is Christ, and whose vital principle is love. Faith teaches that although the august Sacrifice can be offered to God alone, it can nevertheless be celebrated in honor of the saints now reigning in Heaven with God, who has crowned them, to obtain their intercession for us, and also, according to apostolic tradition, to wash away the stains of those brethren who died in the Lord but without yet being wholly purified." In his encyclical "Ecclesia de Eucharistia," our beloved late Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, taught, "In the celebration of the Eucharistic Sacrifice, the Church prays that God, the Father of mercies, will grant His children the fullness of the Holy Spirit so that they may become one body and one spirit in Christ. In raising this prayer to the Father of lights, from whom comes every good endowment and every perfect gift, the Church believes that she will be heard, for she prays in union with Christ her Head and Spouse, who takes up this plea of His Bride and joins it to His own redemptive sacrifice" (No. 43). Lent Schedule
Fridays, March 14, 21 & 28 Noon: Lunch with the Lord & 7pm: Stations of the cross Friday, April 4 Noon: Lunch with the Lord, 5pm: Fish Fry, & 7pm Stations of the Cross Tuesday, April 8 7pm: Lent Reconciliation Service 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

Christ the King Parish Luncheon to Honor St. Patrick

Wednesday, March 19
All members of the parish are invited to a luncheon of corned beef sandwiches, ham sandwiches, Cole slaw, salads, Irish soda bread, desserts, coffee and tea. A free-will donation would be appreciated. The party begins at 11 oclock on Wednesday, March 19, and will take place in the Parish Life Center. Jeremiah Day April 5, 2014 at Mundelein Seminary

This is for young men in grades 7-10. It is an opportunity to see this beautiful seminary and experience what life is like there through the eyes of our current seminarians. There is a modest $5 fee to help with the cost of food. Donuts and bagels will be provided for breakfast and lunch is provided at the seminary cafeteria. Easter Triduum Choir Rehearsals

Lenten Reflection 2014

You are invited to a Lenten Reflection Program at Sacred Heart Monastery on either Saturday, March 8, or Tuesday, March 11 from 9-11am. Sister Mary Bratrsovsky, OSB, will be the presenter. We will reflect on the passage from Philippians "Christ humbled himself, becoming obedient even to death on the cross". Specifically, we will reflect on the topic of humility according to the Rule of Benedict. This presentation will be followed by the Eucharistic Liturgy at 11:30 am. A tour of the facilities - Sacred Heart Monastery and/or Villa St. Benedict is available by request after Mass. Please RSVP to Sister JoAnne Form 630 725 6013. Choir rehearsals for the Easter Triduum begin Wednesday, March 12, at 7:00pm. We will rehearse each Wednesday leading up to Easter from 7:00pm until 9:00pm in church. The choir will sing at the Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil liturgies. All are welcome, more men are needed! JOSEPH TABLE TO HELP PEOPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES AND THE PEOPLE OF WASHINGTON, ILLINOIS These are pictures of the devastation in Washington, Illinois (top) and the Philippines (below). They are both recipients of this years St. Joseph Table. Donations will be made to Washington Helps Its People (WHIP) and to The Sisters of Oika. The donations will aid in the recovery of Washington, Illinois and the Philippines respectively.

The Table will be held in the Early Learning Academys Gymnasium at 1 oclock on March 16. Please plan to come, have a meatless meal, enjoy friends and family and lend a hand to our recipients. A free-will donation will be appreciated.

How Much Should I Give?

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In todays Gospel reading we listen to the confrontation between Jesus and the devil, who thought he might tempt Jesus to forget who he was and commit a grievous sin when he was most vulnerable. Jesus had just spent 40 days and nights out in the desert, alone, away from civilization. He was hungry, thirsty, and tired. If there ever was a time to tempt Jesus, thatwas it. Temptations to sin come at us every day, from many directions and in many different forms. When the temptation tosin tries to overcome us, how do we react? Do we consciously remind ourselves that we are followers of Christ? Is there a time this week when you have needed to confront a temptation to sin? What lessons did you take away from the experience?
