Saint Joseph Parish Mission Statement:
The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, in union with the Blessed
Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, value tradition and prayer. We are committed to strong
leadership, responsive community service, and forming caring, welcoming, intimate relationships
with our fellow brothers and sisters. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church
family.

Notes from the Pastor: Thanks be to God for this Season of Lent! Our Holy Father, Pope Francis mes-
sage for Lent reminds us of our calling to imitate our Master: we Christians are called to confront the poverty
of our brothers and sisters, to touch it, to make it our own and to take practical steps to alleviate it. Destitution
is not the same as poverty: destitution is poverty without faith, without support, without hope. There are three
types of destitution: material, moral and spiritual. Material destitution is what is normally called poverty, and
affects those living in conditions opposed to human dignity: those who lack basic rights and needs such as food,
water, hygiene, work and the opportunity to develop and grow culturally. In response to this destitution, the
Church offers her help, her diakonia, in meeting these needs and binding these wounds which disfigure the face
of humanity...Our efforts are also directed to ending violations of human dignity, discrimination and abuse in
the world, for these are so often the cause of destitution. When power, luxury and money become idols, they take
priority over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our consciences thus need to be converted to justice,
equality, simplicity and sharingNo less a concern is moral destitution, which consists in slavery to vice and
sin. How much pain is caused in families because one of their members often a young person - is in thrall to
alcohol, drugs, gambling or pornography! How many people no longer see meaning in life or prospects for the
future, how many have lost hope! And how many are plunged into this destitution by unjust social conditions, by
unemployment, which takes away their dignity as breadwinners, and by lack of equal access to education and
health care. In such cases, moral destitution can be considered impending suicide. This type of destitution,
which also causes financial ruin, is invariably linked to the spiritual destitution which we experience when we
turn away from God and reject his love. If we think we dont need God who reaches out to us through Christ,
because we believe we can make do on our own, we are headed for a fall. God alone can truly save and free
us. I invite you to read the full text of his message at http://www.va/holy_father/francesco /messages/lent/

Pope Francis Observes a Milestone
This Thursday, March 13, will mark the first year anniversary of Pope Francis
election to head the worlds 1.2 billion Catholics. The choice of Argentinas Car-
dinal Jorge Bergoglio, 76, as our 266th pope came on the first full day of the
conclaves 5th ballot. It was fitting that a Latin American be named since 40% of
the worlds Catholics come from that part of the world. He was chosen to suc-
ceed the retiring Pope Benedict XVI. Since 1998, he has been Archbishop of
Buenos Aires, where his style is low-key and close to the people. Hes been de-
scribed as an intellectual with managerial skills, creating new parishes in Argen-
tina and starting new pastoral programs, such as a Commission for divorcees. He
is a man of strong will and compassion.
New Yorks Cardinal Timothy Dolan told reporters last March 13 that the new
pope met all of the cardinals qualifications saying, They wanted to choose the
right man, a man of God, a man of good pastoral governance, with a sense of the
church universal and a good communicator. Many in and out of the Church
wonder what kind of changes, if any, we can expect from Pope Francis. We
know by the name he chose, Francis, that he was dedicated to simplicity of life.
As archbishop of Buenos Aires, he set a tone of simplicity and humility. He per-
sonally ministered to the sick and dying in the hospitals there. As Pope, he seems
to have signalled changes to the public face of the papacy in matters of liturgy
and ceremony. For his first papal Mass in the Sistine Chapel, he called for the
reinstallation of the altar facing the people that Benedict XVI had removed.
Therefore, we can conclude that his Masses may be less dignified, though hope-
fully no less reverent than the Masses of Pope Benedict. Fr. Jarrod Lies, Director
of the Office of Faith Formation, said, Pope Francis is reminding the church
that the New Evangelization must begin with proclaiming the Gospel--the basic
message about the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit and their saving work and
redeeming love. Apparently, we must spread the Gospel to all the world, wheth-
er as catechists in a classroom or as faithful in the work-a-day world.
As to what sort of changes can we expect from our new Pope? We know at
least that neither he nor any pope will ever make doctrinal changes that our sex-
obsessed, violent, self-indulgent culture continues to demand. Pope Francis col-
leagues say that he has a good sense of humor; he may need that faculty as he
journeys forth in the years ahead.

Dan and Carol Cole: World Travelers Choose Arma
You may have noticed that St. Josephs has two new parishioners: Dan and
Carol Cole. They began attending here in December when Dan enrolled in the
RCIA program to join his wife, who is a life long Catholic. He is originally from
southeast Kansas and Carol grew up in Wisconsin. They met in Madrid, Spain,
where they both were federal employees at the American embassy there. This
initial meeting led to marriage in Madrid in 1978. During their careers, theyve
had the chance to travel extensively. Theyve lived in Japan, Costa Rica, Argen-
tina, Thailand, and the suburbs of Washington, D.C. All the while, they kept a
homebase in northern Virginia.
In 2008, as they neared retirement, they began the search for an ideal place to
live: somewhere that included land for hunting, ponds for fishing, a small, quiet
community with low crime rate. Dan began to Google and mapsearch and Arma,
Kansas, came up in several checks. They both agreed to confirm what they had
read, so they came to Arma in January of 2009. Carol said everything looked
gloomy and dark that day, BUT THEY LOVED IT! Soon, they bought the
farm, located a bit north of Arma on highway 69. With 100 acres or so, Dan can
be the gentleman farmer and Carol loves the quiet. Her hobby is needlework.
She pointed out that being near Kansas City, they can take a quick flight to visit
their son, Chris, in Virginia or their daughter, Heather, in Colorado. Carol has
been attending Mass at Lourdes in Pittsburg since they moved here, but after Dan
decided on instructions, they moved their membership to St. Josephs.
When asked what they think of Kansas, and Arma in particular, their eyes lit up
and it was obvious that they made the right decision. Carol quickly said, Were
pleased with this little part of Kansas where the people are so sweet and welcom-
ing. Dan agreed with his wife. They both jumped into the swing of things in
January when they volunteered to help us take down the Christmas decorations
in the Church. They stayed until the end and seemed to be having fun!
If you havent met them yet, extend your hand (if you recognize them) and
introduce yourself. We all know what it feels like to be the new kid on the
block. Fr. Roger informed me that we have other new parishioners who should
be introduced. Ill be contacting them for future write-ups so we can all get to
know them. Articles by Marcel Normand
