Session 1. Interactive Discussions with Introduction and Global Energy Scenarios (Opportunities for Indonesian Low an! "oal# The ever-increasing demand for electricity and energy in the China, India and the world has made it a necessity to have efficient and environmentally acceptable energy sources. Low-rank coal is a significant component of the world's energy portfolio. The symposium provided a forum for industry, government, and research organi ations to share up-to-date information on the role of low-rank fuels in meeting energy demands, new research findings, current industry needs, and areas of future research. Low-rank coal comprises more than !"-#" percent of both current utili ation and the reserves in countries like Indonesia, India, China, $nited %tates, &ussia, Central 'urope, and much of the (acific &im. Considering that coal-based generation is e)pected to grow by *+, over the ne)t two decades, supplying -., of a larger total demand by *"*", the future utili ation of these coals faces both challenges and opportunities, including emissions control/ more efficient, lower-cost combustion and gasification technologies/ and the new vision of a hydrogen economy. 0ith .+, of the world1s coal reserves in Indonesia, the %outheast 2sian country is a key coal producer and e)porter and is leading the way in coal upgrading and conversion pro3ects. The Indonesia 4overnment has announced a proposed law to ban e)ports of low-rank coal by *"5-, which in turn has led to coal upgrading pro3ects at mine sites in Indonesia. %ome companies have started to invest in coal upgrading and conversion technology to ensure they have a future market for their low-grade coal. 2s the ban deadline approaches, there is greater urgency for coal mining owners6operators to be updated on the re7uirements, and have the know-how and technology to convert low-grade coal to 8 at minimum medium-7uality - for e)port. $he preconference wor!shop is designed to address the issues of %tandard methodologies for assessing the economics of coal upgrading systems 9verview of available coal upgrading technologies: 0ho owns and operates the coal upgrading plant and infrastructure: Technical and economic issues that have limited the implementation of coal upgrading facilities in Indonesia (ossible solutions to these issues

Sessions in this stream will deal with Coal Properties and Impact on Utilization Topics included coal analysis, ash formation, fireside deposition, and particulate control in combustion systems. (articipants will get to know how to use the high moisture and low ash fusion

temperatures in Low &ank Coals having a ma3or bearing on efficiency of coal burning with impacts on designs of boilers as volume etc. This will provide participants with a practical overview of the physical and chemical processes related to coal-fired boilers. Sesion %& "oal "haracteri'ation( "oal )nalysis for *tili'ation of Low an! "oals "oal )nalysis + ,hat Do the )nalyses eally -ean. /ow the analysis effect the econo0ics and opportunities for Indonesian "oals The analysis of coal has always been challenging and the topics include; 2n overview of coal origin and formation Coal chemical and physical properties. Coal characteri ation The origin of standard methods of analysis. <escriptions and uses of pro)imate, ultimate, and mineral analysis and ash fusion, among others. The uses of methods for combustion environmental control. The limitations of standard methods. 2pplications for new methods of coal analysis.

Session %b& )sh 1or0ation( 1ireside Deposition( and 2articulate "ontrol in "o0bustion Syste0s The ash that forms during coal combustion has the potential to cause significant problems in boilers and particulate control devices. 0orkshop topics include; 2sh-forming materials in fuels. =uel characteri ation measures. =ireside ash deposition - fouling and slagging. 2sh particulate control with electrostatic precipitation and fabric filtration. (redicting ash behavior - advanced indices and models. Case histories.

Sessions in this half will deal with Low Rank Coal Utilization Techniques
Session 3& Interactive Discussions on "oal "onversion $echnologies for Low ran! "oals( 0orld electricity production is e)pected to double over the ne)t twenty-five years . <ependence on fossil fuels for electricity production will continue to dominate through this period and well into the future. Currently, coal is the fuel for about !", of total installed power generation capacity and the coal share of the electricity market is e)pected to remain essentially steady over the ne)t *+ years. >evertheless, the amount of coal consumed for power generation will increase substantially. It is e)pected that world coal-fired power production will grow at an average rate of !, per annum. The forecast demand growth for power generation will re7uire an investment of the order of $%?! trillion with about $%?5 trillion in coal-fired power generation. The increase in demand is attributed to growth in world population by +" percent over the ne)t *+ years and by heavy demand growth in the 2sia (acific-rim nations. In 2ustralia, coal is the principal fuel for power generation providing @* percent of electricity production. Two thirds of the electricity generated from coal in India, China and many ma3or countries including 2ustralia relies on high-rank coals Abituminous coalsB and one-third on low-rank coals Abrown coals

and ligniteB.0hile the rate of growth of renewable energy and biomass technologies is e)pected to be substantial in the ne)t few decades, it is apparent that these technologies will provide only a relatively small proportion of 2ustralia's total energy needs. Coal will remain the principal fuel for electricity generation, in India, China and many ma3or countries including 2ustralia and worldwide, for many decades to come. In order to minimise the impact of coal fired power generation on the environment there is a need to develop and install advanced cycle power generation systems when it is economically viable to do so. This session will address technologies for power generation like %C, $%C, C=CC, I4CC Session 4& Low an!
