The text below describes the climbing holiday of an unfir office worker. Read it carefully and answer Questions 5`3.
1

Walking past the gaudy posters and advertising vacations to exotic locations,
Walters eye was caught by one featuring Mount Kinabalu, touted
as the highest peak in South East Asia. Never having been one to exert
himself he had as much affinity to exercise as a chicken to water
Walter made the momentous decision to book a package to Sabah and

and climb Mount Kinabalu.

2

Walter strode purposefully into the travel agency. The tour would leave
two months later, with the interim, said the travel agent, looking askance
at Walters paunch, serving as time for the participants to engage in some
suitable preparation for the trek. Walter puffed himself to his full height

10

(162cm if he took a deep breath) and informed the travel agent that two
months were than sufficient. The cheek of the travel agent, water
fumed on the way back to the office, flinging an insinuation like that.
Having read about Mount Kinabalu previously, Walter knew that climbing
It required neither climbing skills nor equipment. In fact, climbing the

15

mountain was such a popular activity for locals and foreigners that a
path had been carved out of the mountain. All climbers needed to,
Walter determined was to follow the path.
3.

The next two months flew by like a flock of migratory blackbirds, primarily
owing to the launch of a new tablet computer by Walters company.

20

Walter spent his days shuttling between the advertising agency, the media
owners and the technical team, and the nights wining and dining with
the companys management, who had flown in from the United States
specifically for the launch.
4.

After the launch, Walter set his sights on tackling Mount Kinabalu.

25

The day of the trip dawned and he was soon making small talk with the

other participants at base camp. The guide, a well-built Sabahan who

towered over most of the group, provided an introductory briefing and
mentioned that he had been climbing the slopes since he was six. If this
was the case, thought Walter, the climb should be a piece of cake! How

30

mistaken he would turn out to be.

5

The climb started off uneventfully enough. The group was fortunate
to have good weather. Wispy cotton puffs of clouds chased one
another across the cerulean sky while birds circled lazily overhead,
screeching raucously to one another. The ear-shattering clicking of

35

the cicadas accompanied the groups progress, making conversation

difficult. Like a commander with his troops, Walter marched ahead
resolutely. Along the way, a local woman made her way rapidly past their
group. She looked to be in her 40s and had a gas cylinder strapped to her
back. As she ran past, she offered a cheery wave. She was on the way

40

to the guest house, the guide said, a resting point between base camp
and the summit were climbers could have a breather before continuing
the ascent.
6

The group travelled on a path that was broad and featured little gradient,
but this soon changed as everyone proceeded up the mountain. The path

45

degenerated into a narrow trail which gradually became steeper. Walter

was still at the head of the group, but to his shame, he felt a wave of
nausea wash over him. Walter tried fervently to hold it in but to no avail.
His breakfast soon lay like unwanted leftovers at his feet. He mourned
for the defilement of his branded hiking boots, bought specially for the

50

occasion.
7.

While Walter had been soiling the mountain with his breakfast, the other
climbers had surged forward. Two old ladies whom he had previously
labelled as unlikely to finish the climb now smiled sympathetically at
him. One gave Walter a piece of tissue. Its the thin mountain air, said

55

the other. You need to walk slowly so that you body has time to adjust
to the lower level of oxygen available. Walter nodded, too winder to
speak. For the rest of the trek, Walter stayed meekly at the tail end of
the groups, not willing to enact a repeat performance. Not long after, the
group met the same local woman, who was now on her way down the

60

mountain, having delivered the gas cylinder. During the course of the
afternoon, several more of these hardy specimens continued to go up the
mountain with a full load on their back and come down empty-handed.

Walter could only bow down in the presence f such omnipotence.

8.

The sky was shaded in vibrant hues of red and orange when the exhausted

65

climbers reached the guest house. After a hot dinner, thanks to the gas
cylinders brought up by the locals, some members were ready to explore
the area. Walter was impressed with the picturesque surroundings and
took many photographs. At dusk, Walter went to bed so that he would
be well-rested for the wake-up call at 2am, even though his group

70

members were still outdoors, enthralled by the magnificent mountain

scenery. The unearthly hour had been chosen so that everyone would be
able to reach the summit in time for the sunrise. The guide had promise
a glorious feast for their eyes and Walter did not intend to miss it.
9.

Awakened by the guide in the dark of the night, the group stumbled out

75

of the guest house. The ground had changed from soil to granite, which
made the going treacherous. Fortunately there were ropes to guide them,
and hanging onto them for dear life, Walter made his way cautiously
to the summit. Walter gasped at the beauty of the panoramic vista that
lay before him. The sun, at first peeping over the horizon like a bashful

80

bride, gained momentum until one could see its full splendour as it hung
brilliantly in the sky.
10.

Descending from the mountain was much easier than going up. Gravity
was not the only thing propelling the group. Everyones uplifted hearts
went a long way in lightening their footsteps.
