Cut off!

The access road between the villages of Mankgele, Banareng and Makopung near Leboeng were severely flooded by the rain and even graders had problems traversing the roads at certain points. People had to walk huge distances as few vehicles could manage to traverse the temporary bush road over a grassy (and soggy) hill into the village (now readers can see why Platinum Gazette personnel are not too eager to accept invitations to informal 4 x 4 outings - we get it all in a days work). Makopung was not the only village affected by inaccessibility this week.

MQA expands
The Mining Qaulifications Authority (MQA) on Tuesday hosted a Stakeholder Engagement Forum at the CN Phathudi Campus of the Sekhukhune FET College at Praktiseer. The meeting in the college hall was very well attended by delegates, although it seemed that the current wage strikes in the area adversely affected the attendece of some delegates, especially from local mines. A large number of FET College students also attended the meeting, where the local expansion of the MQA was expalained, as well as the authoritys future role in training and growing of the mining industry. The increasing importance of local representation by the MQA was emphasised and the role of fledgling regional offices highlighted with the introduction of key roleplayers to delegates. The forum was also attended by key roleplayers from government such as the Office of the Premier in Limpopo. The question and answer session during the meeting proved to be very popular and roleplayers went to great lenghts to clasrify uncertainties and to explain the working of the MQA.

Rain bad for vagrants

When extreme weather strikes it is often the poor that gets hit the hardest. A vagrant man currently calling Makopung home moved from an old ruin into nearby bushes after walls started to collapse around him. He is unable to obtain government social support as he is without an identity document. In the picture above Mr Robert Makhubedu showed the newspaper where mans (wet) blankets are being stored in the ruin.

The mighty Olifants River is running deep and wide after all the recent rain. The top photograph was taken at Penge on Wednesday this week.

While villagers from areas such as Makopung had to make alternative travel arrangements (photograph left) residents from Mankele Village were smiling all the way. The bridge (photo above) over the Olifants River was finished last year and even after rain that caused flooding elsewhere they remain connected to the outside world.

The recent heavy rains not only brought inconvenience to humans and animals, but also some beauty. The waterfall on the left was photographed at Lepelle Village Section 2, adjacent to Strydom Tunnel, this week. The photographs below were taken between Schoonoord and Mohlaletsi Village on Saturday last week. Roads became rivers and an abandoned donkey cart stood lonesome while the animals waited for their owner to return after the rain.

Careful!

Careful driving is necessary when taking on the Abel Erasmus Pass towards the Strydom Tunnel. Part of the road caved away during the heavy rains. Especially at night the markers might not be visible enough. A dangerous hole on which Platinum Gazette previously reported is still standing strong after repairs to it - good work road construction team!

Limpopo Safety and Security promotes 365 days no violence
Nthame Primary School between Burgersfort and Riba Cross was a hive of activity on Tuesday when the Limpopo Department of Safety and Security hosted a seminar concerning the 365 days of no violence against women and children. Senior personnel from the Police and government officials from various departments and speheres of government attended the seminar. Localo, regional and provincial politicians also attended and while roleplayers gave messages of support, ample time was given to stakeholders to give their inputs regarding problems experienced in communities that spark violence against women and children. Is South Africa a failed and lawless country?

International interest in Oscar Pistorius murder trial currently being heard in the Pretoria High Court also placed the focus on South Africa as a country. Alan Dershowitz, an American jurist and commentator told talk-show host Piers Morgan on CCN that South Africa is a failed and lawless country. He added that South Africa has deep, deep racial divisions. His appearance on the talk show was at the start of the trial and since then the hordes of international journalists had enough time to experience South Africas hospitality, observe the justice system and use things such our banking and telecommunication systems. According to Max du Preez, a South African author and columnist a failed state is classically defined as a state with a failed judiciary; an inability to provide public services or enforce its own laws; a state with military interference in politics; a state that has lost the monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force within its borders; a state where citizens basic human rights are perpetually at risk. Platinum Gazette asked readers whether they agree with Dershowits description of South African or not. They also motivated their answers and told the newspaper what they feel is something that works very well in South Africa and can be seen as an example to the rest of the world.

Mr George Maluleke said: I think I agree. With tender corruption and Me. Marlene Prinsloo s: Ek stem Zumas Nkandla scandal we show saam want nie almal hier word oor that we are lawless. We hear things dieselfde kam geskeer wanneer dit and dont know where it will end. by wet en orde kom nie. Vir een is What is good here is the fact that dit reg om met korrupsie en moord even in tough economic times weg te kom en vir n ander nie. Wat South Africa has good job goed is by ons is die feit dat ons opportunities compared to other baie meer open minded is as mense countries. Government is doing well in ander lande. Ons gee ook om vir to encourage companies to employ ons cultural heritage. By haar is young people. Peanut.

Mr Godfrey Katlego said: Yes, there is no control over crime in South Africa. We dont have work, so people do crime. What is good about South Africa is that we have a lot of mines.

Me.

Mr Nice Poeng said: No! South Africa has good laws! We must look at countries like Nigeria and Zimbabwe where they still hang people. We are better than that. I think our justice system is an example for the world.

Mnr.

Mr Mahlatse Selahle said: South Africa is not a lawless country. You get a mix of people from countries all over the world here. The problem is that these foreigners often become gangsters. I think we have good banks and hospitals in South Africa.

Mr Mmusho Serage said: No, I dont agree with him. This is a democratic country. Our laws work well and we let the law take its course like with Mr Pistorius. We do have crime, but our law enforcement officers are trying to control it. Our justice system and laws are an example to the world.

Mr Leonard Bengura said: I disagree with him. If we were lawless people like Pistorius would not have been brought to trial. I trust our justice system and think it is an example for other countries. Just look at our track record to put away criminals.

Mr Kgaogelo Mpethi said: No, it is not true. South Africa is nice for us. Look at Malema. He was speeding and the cops caught him and took him to court. South Africa is not lawless. What I like is our transport system. You can travel anywhere you want - we have taxis and buses. Government is also busy delivering electricity and water.

Ms Betty Rankwe and Ms Petunia Mahlo said: Yes, we agree with him. We are suffering with our roads and schools and services. Our government is so poor. There is also too much crime. What we like about South Africa is that we are together now as one. South Africa is free. We are one people and we have democracy. Right: Ms Pretty Masuku, Jane Maphanga and Rebone Mokgethwa said: It is lawless here. Even if they know some did something wrong they just investigate, investigate and investigate, but dont really do something. They only do things with high profile cases such as Pistorius. We like the freedom we have. We are also ahead with cell phones, e.g. in Zimbabwe you dont easily get network coverage.

Ms Vinolia Majutla and Ms Petronel Kwinika said: Things in South Africa are going fine. Crime is bad, but we are coping. Our justice system works just fine. South Africa is a beautiful country - everything is beautiful and an example to the world.

Mnr. Quintin Krog s: Ja, hy is reg.

Ms Anna Mamabolo said: We are not a lawless and failed country! There is everything we need in this country.

Left: Ms MP Maleka said: No, our government is managing to improve our lives. The Pistorius thing was just an accident. It is a family affair, it should not be for the whole world.

Triton Karate Toernooi
