Writing Across the Curriculum, Leadership Summer Institute 2014

What is the NWP-CU Summer Institute? The NWP-CU Summer Institute consists of a two week, 3 credit graduate course, Writing Across the Curriculum Leadership Institute followed by a one week, 2 credit technology course, Using Technology to Enhance the Writing Process. The structure of the summer institute prompts teachers to explore their own writing practices as a means of improving their writing instruction. Upon completion of the Institute, participants become National Writing Project Teacher Consultants who continue to grow as writers and teachers of writing through involvement in a professional community. Opportunities for continued professional development and leadership include enrollment in the Writing Certificate program, involvement in collegial studies, writing circles, retreats, participation in the Integrated Arts series, and electronic conversation with colleagues. NWP-CU hosts professional development programs that feature teacher demonstration workshops and presentations, affording additional leadership opportunities for Teacher Consultants. Who is eligible to receive a scholarship to the NWP-CU Summer Institute? Participants in the Summer Institute include pre-school through college teachers across all subject areas who are concerned about improving their understanding of writing and how to teach it. Participants in the Summer Institute who are interested in enrolling in the CU Writing Certificate Program will be given priority consideration; however this is not a condition for a scholarship award. Why spend three weeks of your summer at the Institute? Writing is fundamental to thinking in all schools, content areas, grades, and ability levels. To achieve more effective writing instruction, National Writing Project emphasizes that teachers, not the external experts, best facilitate school reform. Accordingly, the NWP-CU Summer Institute provides the following: deep and meaningful exploration of writing for its own sake, as well as best practices for the classroom opportunities to work with other dedicated professionals, not only in the summer, but throughout the year access to a nationwide network of Teacher Consultants who possess and share a wealth of knowledge a launching pad to the (15 credit) Writing Certificate program at CU When is the NWP-CU Summer Institute? Our 2014 Summer Institute will be held at the Milwaukee Art Museum July 7 to July 18, 2014. The Institute will meet Monday through Friday, from 1:15 to 4:30 p.m. There will also be a one week, two credit optional technology follow-up course at the Carroll Center for Graduate Studies computer lab, July 21-25, from 1:30-4:30p.m. To apply for a $1,000 scholarship to the Summer Institute, please submit the following: a cover letter indicating your interest in the Summer Institute and summarizing your teaching experience. Include your address, email, phone number, and if you are interested in enrolling in the Writing Certificate Program a response to one of the following prompts with no more than 750 words: 1. Describe the role that writing plays in your classroom. Include how you wish to grow as a teacher of writing. OR 2. Describe a moment in your history as a writer when you most or least connected to the act of writing. Applications accepted until April 28, 2014.
