2.1 Introduction
Overview
Voice services over adaptive multi-user channels on one slot (VAMOS) was introduced in GSM/ EDGE radio access network (GERAN) evolution and developed based on Multi-User Reusing One Slot (MUROS) technology. VAMOS expands GERAN network capacity without adding transceivers (TRXs) or frequencies. VAMOS is a technique used on Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks to increase voice capacity. It multiplexes two voice calls onto one voice channel, especially one half-rate traffic channel (TCHH). As shown in Figure 2-1, a high-order modulation scheme similar to quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) works with orthogonal training sequence codes (TSCs) to multiplex the calls in the downlink, and Gaussian minimum shift-frequency keying (GMSK) is used to modulate signals in the uplink. The two subchannels use orthogonal TSCs to occupy the same voice channel. Huawei's VAMOS multiplexes two voice calls onto the same TCHH to double network capacity. Figure 2-1 VAMOS channel multiplexing in the uplink and downlink
Issue 02 (2013-06-30)
2 Overview
2.2 Benefits
VAMOS expands network capacity simply through a software upgrade, without changing the structure of a GSM network or adding TRXs. However, voice quality is slightly reduced due to mutual interference from multiplexed calls. According to 3GPP specifications, the quality standards for VAMOS-enabled networks are looser than those for traditional GSM networks. No VAMOS MSs are now available for commercial use. Therefore, the gains from VAMOS depend on the penetration rate of SAIC MSs. Table 2-1 lists the mapping between frequency reuse patterns and VAMOS capacity gains. As shown in the table, VAMOS brings considerable gains in a network that use a loose frequency reuse pattern and has a large penetration rate of SAIC MSs. Table 2-1 Mapping between frequency reuse patterns and VAMOS capacity gains Frequency Reuse Pattern 4x3 SAIC MS Penetration Rate 50% 75% 100% 3x3 50% 75% 100% 1x3 50% 75% 100% VAMOS Capacity Gain 10%-15% 15%-22% 20%-30% 7%-12% 10%-18% 15%-25% 5%-10% 7%-15% 10%-20%

3 Technical Description
Technical Description
Without VAMOS, a TRX carries a maximum of 8 full-rate calls (16 kbit/s for each call) or 16 half-rate calls (8 kbit/s for each call). With VAMOS, a TRX carries up to 32 VAMOS calls (8 kbit/s for each call). Figure 3-1 shows the details. Figure 3-1 Number of MSs carried on a TRX with and without VAMOS
VAMOS multiplexes two calls onto the same TCHH. In this way, voice signals of these calls are transmitted simultaneously. If the signals of the two calls are superposed, severe interference occurs, and the voice quality of the multiplexed calls deteriorates. In the downlink, the alphaQPSK modulation algorithm is used. That is, the data of the two VAMOS mobile stations (MSs) is mapped onto two bits of the QPSK symbol and sent in orthogonal TSCs. Then, the two MSs demodulate their data using different methods. In the uplink, GMSK is used to modulate signals. Each MS transmits signals using its own antenna, and the base transceiver station (BTS) uses two or more antennas to receive signals. In this way, VAMOS divides one TCHH into two 8 kbit/s orthogonal subchannels. VAMOS requires support from both MSs and the base station subsystem (BSS). VAMOS channel multiplexing can be performed only on MSs that support SAIC or VAMOS. For details about SAIC or VAMOS MSs, see 2.1 "MS VAMOS Capabilities." The VamosSwitch (BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter controls whether a Huawei BSS supports VAMOS. The VAMOS feature consists of the following functions: l VAMOS channel multiplexing VAMOS is implemented based on TCHHs. When the traffic in a cell is heavy, TCHHs are preferentially allocated to calls. VAMOS channel multiplexing is enabled only if the proportion of half-rate services is high and radio resources are insufficient. For details about VAMOS channel multiplexing, see 3.2 VAMOS Channel Multiplexing. l VAMOS channel demultiplexing When channel resources become sufficient or the voice quality of multiplexed calls deteriorates, VAMOS channel demultiplexing is enabled to convert VAMOS TCHHs back to ordinary TCHHs, improving user experience.

3 Technical Description
For details about VAMOS channel demultiplexing, see 3.3 VAMOS Channel Demultiplexing. l VAMOS power control
After VAMOS is enabled, power control is required to eliminate interference between two multiplexed calls caused by VAMOS channel multiplexing. This mitigates voice quality deterioration for multiplexed calls and for the entire network. For details about VAMOS power control, see 3.4 VAMOS Power Control.

3.1.1 SAIC MS
An MS reports its SAIC capabilities in the Downlink Advanced Receiver Performance field of the Mobile Station Classmark 3 information element (IE) in the Classmark Change message. Table 3-1 lists the mapping between Downlink Advanced Receiver Performance values and SAIC capabilities. For more details, see 3GPP TS 24.008. Table 3-1 Mapping between Downlink Advanced Receiver Performance values and SAIC capabilities Downlink Advanced Receiver Performance 00 01 10 11 SAIC Capability Non-SAIC SAIC SAIC SAIC
Some MSs support SAIC, but the Mobile Station Classmark 3 IE reports that the MS is nonSAIC. This decreases the VAMOS channel multiplexing rate. To resolve the problem, the GBFD-115831 Mute SAIC MS Identification feature is introduced to identify this type of MS. For details about this type of MS, see the Mute SAIC MS Identification Feature Parameter Description. Table 3-2 lists the mapping between SAIC capabilities reported in Mobile Station Classmark 3 and SAIC capabilities actually supported by a Huawei BSS. 3.1.3 TSC
VAMOS channel multiplexing can be performed between two SAIC MSs, between two VAMOS MSs, or between an SAIC MS and a VAMOS MS. The descriptions below assume the following: l l l l VAMOS MSs are called new MSs. MSs that support only SAIC are called old MSs. A set of TSCs (TSCs 0 through 7) defined before VAMOS was introduced are called old TSCs. A set of TSCs (TSCs 0 through 7) defined after VAMOS was introduced are called new TSCs.
The same No. has different meanings for a new TSC and for an old TSC. A new and old TSCs with the same No. are orthogonal. For details, see 3GPP TS 45.002. Currently, only new MSs can use new TSCs. Huawei introduces the primary and secondary TSCs for the scenario when two old MSs are multiplexed onto the same VAMOS TCHH. To configure the primary and secondary TSCs for a cell, set the VamosMainTsc(BSC6900,BSC6910) and VamosSubTsc (BSC6900,BSC6910) parameters to appropriate values. A Huawei BSS considers a TSC pair as approximately orthogonal if the primary and secondary TSCs are paired as shown in Table 3-4. Table 3-4 TSC pairs when two calls using old TSCs are multiplexed onto the same VAMOS TCHH Primary TSC 0 1 2 3
Issue 02 (2013-06-30)
Secondary TSC 2 7 0 4
3 Technical Description
Primary TSC 4 5 6 7
Secondary TSC 3 6 5 1
When no TRX in a cell participates in frequency hopping, the primary TSC must be the same as the TSC for the cell (that is, the value of the BCC(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter). When some TRXs in a cell participate in frequency hopping, each frequency hopping group is configured with one TSC. In this situation, all TSCs for the frequency hopping groups must be the same as the primary TSC. Otherwise, exceptions occur in VAMOS services.
The ATCB refers to the difference between the downlink receive level and the optimal neighboring cell level of a call.

Second, the BSS selects a candidate VAMOS call that meets the pairing conditions from the queue. Finally, the BSS assigns the new call to the TCHH occupied by the call selected from the candidate VAMOS call queue if the two calls can be paired.

Uses interference rejection combining (IRC) to demodulate the uplink data of the call with a strong signal level. Uses interference cancellation to eliminate some interference produced by the call with a strong signal level for the call with a weak signal level. Uses IRC to demodulate the uplink data of the call with a weak signal level.
The uplink power control algorithm synchronizes the measurement reports (MRs) for two multiplexed calls and performs a joint power control decision to keep the power of these calls within an acceptable range. The SicPwrCtrlSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter controls whether to enable uplink power control. The principles of uplink power control are similar to those of Huawei power control algorithm III. The only difference is that, when making uplink power control decisions, the receive level difference between two multiplexed calls must be within a certain range to facilitate demodulation. The SicDiffHighThd(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter specifies the upper threshold of the receive level difference. If the two algorithms have been enabled on the network and the high quality indicators (HQIs) are good, power control optimization is not required. If the two algorithms are not enabled on the network, purchase the license for the HUAWEI III Power Control Algorithm feature, enable the two algorithms, and monitor network performance for a certain period. After ensuring that network performance has not deteriorated, enable VAMOS. If network performance has deteriorated, optimize power control parameters for the two algorithms to improve network performance and then enable VAMOS.

VAMOS channel multiplexing requires support from MSs. Therefore, the BSS must obtain MSs' VAMOS capabilities contained in the Mobile Station Classmark 3 IE in advance. The methods for obtaining the Mobile Station Classmark 3 IE which contains the MSs' VAMOS capabilities are as follows: l The BSS obtains the Mobile Station Classmark 3 IE using the classmark update procedure triggered by the mobile switching center (MSC).

Issue 02 (2013-06-30)
4 Related Features
The BSS uses the early classmark sending control function to instruct an MS to report the Mobile Station Classmark 3 IE in advance. This method does not require support from the MSC and takes effect when the ECSC(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter is set to YES (Yes).
The MSC, however, triggers the classmark update procedure only for some calls. Therefore, set ECSC(BSC6900,BSC6910) to YES(Yes) to enable the early classmark sending control function.
4.17 EDGE/EDGE+
If the VAMOS and EDGE/EDGE+ features are enabled on the same TRX group, PS service rate may decrease. If the digital signal processing (DSP) capability of the TRX group is insufficient after VAMOS channel multiplexing is triggered, the BSS decreases the rate of EDGE/EDGE+ services on the TRX group.
4.21 eMLPP
The VAMOS feature does not support enhanced multi-level precedence and preemption (eMLPP). Therefore, other calls cannot preempt the resources occupied by multiplexed calls using eMLPP.

NOTE
l The following limitations are imposed on the TRXs that support VAMOS on an RF module: It is assumed that an RF module is configured with four TRXs (TRXs 0 through 3) and that all the four TRXs support VAMOS. VAMOS channel multiplexing can be performed only on one channel with the same channel number on the four TRXs at the same time. For example, if VAMOS channel multiplexing is performed on channel 0 of TRX 2, it cannot be performed on channel 0 of TRX 0, 1, or 3. Other channels have the same limitations by analogy. l For VAMOS I and VAMOS II MSs, the BSC allocates only the old TSC to calls using the RF module if a GRFU V1, MRFU V1, RRU3008 V1, RRU3908 V1, GRFU V2, MRFU V2, RRU3008 V2, or RRU3908 V2 is used.

5.1 Network Performance
l
NOTE
Network Impact
The VAMOS feature expands network capacity at the expense of voice quality. Specifically, this feature has the following impacts on network performance: VAMOS expands network capacity, relieves network congestion, and increases traffic volume.
The VAMOS capacity gains vary with the SAIC MS penetration rate and frequency reuse pattern. Specifically, the larger the SAIC MS penetration rate and the looser the frequency reuse pattern, the larger the VAMOS capacity gains.
When VAMOS channel multiplexing is triggered, interference occurs between two multiplexed calls. This deteriorates the HQIs, mean opinion score (MOS), and call drop rate.
l l
VAMOS channel multiplexing and demultiplexing using an intra-cell handover increase the number of intra-cell handovers and possibly decrease the handover success rate. VAMOS channel multiplexing using the assignment procedure possibly decreases the assignment success rate. If the SDCCHWaitMREn(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter is set to ON(On), call access may be delayed and the traffic volume and call drop rate on SDCCHs may increase. If the VAMOS and EDGE/EDGE+ features are enabled on the same TRX group with insufficient DSP capabilities, the uplink PS service rate automatically decreases. After VAMOS is enabled, more Abis and A transmission resources are required, and the CPU usage, DSP usage, and memory usage of service processing boards increase. You must evaluate whether additional hardware or transmission resources are required.
l l
5 Network Impact
Figure 5-2 shows the TCHH status displayed on the LMT when VAMOS is enabled in the cell and all TCHHs are idle. The four subchannels are coded from left to right in the following sequence: 0, 1,2, and 3. Figure 5-2 Status of idle TCHHs when VAMOS is enabled
Figure 5-3 shows the status of TCHHs (channels 6 and 7 of TRX 1, 2, and 4) occupied by calls. As shown in the figure, two half-rate calls are performing VAMOS channel multiplexing on channels 6 and 7 of TRX 1; channels 6 and 7 of TRXs 2 and 4 that are occupied by two halfrate calls are ordinary TCHHs.

Step 2 Run the SET FHO command to force VAMOS channel multiplexing on the call that occupies the second subchannel. SET FHO: OBJTYPE=CHN, TRXID=0, CHNO=7, HOMOD=VAMOSREUSE, SUBCHNO=1, DESTTRXID=0, DESTCHNO=7, DESTSUBCHNO=2; Step 3 Check the status of subchannels occupied by the two calls. The status indicates that the two calls are multiplexed onto the same TCHH, as shown in Figure 5-5. ----End Figure 5-5 Status of VAMOS TCHHs

Step 1 Run the SET FHO command to force VAMOS channel demultiplexing on the call that occupies the third subchannel. SET FHO: OBJTYPE=CHN, TRXID=0, CHNO=7, HOMOD=VAMOSDEMULTIPLEX, SUBCHNO=2; Step 2 Check the status of subchannels occupied by the two calls. The status indicates that the two calls occupy ordinary TCHHs, as shown in Figure 5-7. ----End Figure 5-7 Status of TCHHs occupied by two ordinary calls when VAMOS is enabled

7.1 When to Use VAMOS
l l l
Engineering Guidelines
This feature is recommended when all the following conditions are met: The network has heavy traffic and is congested. The network does not have a high requirement for voice quality and allows a maximum MOS decrease of 0.3. The SAIC MS penetration rate is greater than 30%, because only SAIC MSs now support VAMOS in live networks. If the GSM network is mature with stable or decreasing users, VAMOS is recommended in heavy traffic scenarios (for example, during holidays). If the GSM network is growing rapidly, adding TRXs is recommended to expand network capacity. Use VAMOS to expand network capacity only if network congestion cannot be relieved by increasing the proportion of half-rate services. The proportion of half-rate services has no impact on the application scenarios for VAMOS.
Do not use the same TSCs as neighboring cells that use the same frequencies. The BTSs that use the same frequencies and TSCs must be distant from each other.

7 Engineering Guidelines
l l l
Ensure that orthogonal TSCs are used for two calls to be multiplexed onto the same TCHH. Keep cells that use the same TSCs far away from each other or configure these cells reversely.
7.2.2 Capacity
l For an existing network: Enable the VAMOS feature in areas where transmission is congested and modify related algorithm parameters to relieve network congestion. Enabling VAMOS does not affect capacity planning for the live network. For a newly deployed network: VAMOS, equivalent to the Half Rate Speech feature, facilitates capacity planning by estimating the proportion of VAMOS traffic volume to total traffic volume on the entire network and the traffic bearing capabilities of TRX boards.

7.3.2 Precautions
The BSS automatically resets the cell after you change the setting of the VAMOS Switch parameter. The BSS forces inter-cell handovers for ongoing calls in the cell before resetting the cell and considers a handover failure as a call drop.
7.3.3 Activation
Using MML Commands
l Activating VAMOS channel multiplexing using the assignment procedure Step 1 Run the SET GCELLPWR3 command with III Power Control Optimized Enable set to YES (Yes). NOTE
The following steps are used as an example to verify that the BSC allows only BQ handovers for VAMOS demultiplexing and prohibits other quality-based handovers (including interference handovers, BQ handovers, and TCHF-TCHH handovers) when the BQ handover algorithm is enabled:
1. 2.
Run the SET GCELLHOBASIC command with both Intracell HO Allowed and BQ HO Allowed set to YES(Yes). Run the SET GCELLAMRQUL command with both UL Qual. Limit for AMR FR and UL Qual. Limit for AMR HR set to 0.

Issue 02 (2013-06-30)
7 Engineering Guidelines
3.
Run the SET GCELLAMRQUL command with both DL Qual. Limit for AMR FR and DL Qual. Limit for AMR HR set to 0.
Step 8 Check the TCHH status in cell 0. Expected result: Two MSs are being multiplexed onto the same TCHH. No BQ handover is performed. Step 9 Run the SET GCELLVAMOS command with its parameters set as follows: 1. 2. 3. Set both VAMOS Switch and Channel Demultiplex on Bad Qual. to ON(On). Set BQ VAMOS Channel Demultiplex Optimize to ON(On). Set both UL RX Bad Qual. Demultiplex Thres. and DL RX Bad Qual. Demultiplex Thres. to 0.
Step 10 Recheck the TCHH status after several seconds. Figure 7-17 shows the TCHH status in cell 0. Figure 7-17 TCHH status 4
Expected result: Several seconds after optimization of VAMOS channel demultiplexing due to BQ is enabled, VAMOS channel demultiplexing is performed, and the call with good voice quality is handed over to another TCHH. Several seconds later, a BQ handover is triggered on the call with good voice quality. A BQ handover is triggered on the call with poor voice quality only when the timer specified by the BQ VAMOS Channel Demultiplex Penalty Period parameter is timed out. ----End
