Chapter 1 Optical Fibers Transmitter

I. Curriculum Objectives
1. To understand the operation theory of optical fibers. 2. To understand the operation theory of optical fibers transmitter circuit. 3. To design and implement the optical fibers transmitter. . To measure and adjust the optical fibers transmitter.

II. Curriculum Theory

1. The Typical Optical Fibers Transmission !ystem
" typical transmission system includes a transmitter# receiver and data channel as sho$n in figure 1%1. The signal the transmitter $ill produce is a suitable mode signal# $hich can transmit at the data channel. Then the signal $ill pass through the data channel and send to the receiver. &ata channels can be divided into t$o types# $hich are the unguided channel and the guided channel. The most typical e'ample of the unguided channel is by using the $ave motion of atmosphere or air to transmit a signal. On the other hand# the commercial $ireless radio and television broadcast and so on are the common applications of data channel by using the $ave motion of the atmosphere. (uided channel includes various types of electric conductivity transmission structure as sho$n in the figure 1%2. Figure 1%2 is the diagram of electric conductivity transmission line# $hich includes parallel feeder# coa'ial cable and rectangular $aveguide. Obviously# the cost to manufacture# installation and maintenance of the guided channel are more e'pensive than the unguided channel. )o$ever# the guided channel has the advantages of privacy# irrelevant to climate and ability to transmit a signal at the internal# belo$ or nearby the material. The signal of the receiver is to receive the signal from the data channel and convert to the final mode.

Figure 1%3 is the bloc* diagram of the optical fibers transmission system. In figure 1%3# $e can see that the optical fibers transmitter includes modulator# carrier source and channel coupler+ the optical fibers receiver includes optical detector# amplifier and signal processor+ the data channel uses optical fibers as the guided line. In this chapter# $e $ill discuss the characteristics of optical fibers transmitter.

The original signal is possibly a sound $ave# image or current signal. 4evertheless# in the optical fibers communication system# no matter under $hat *ind of condition# the data must be converted to electric signal before transmission# therefore# $e usually use a transducer to convert a non%electric signal to electric signal.
