Chapter 20
Testing Hypotheses About Proportions
Chapter 20 Solutions to Class Examples
1. See Class Example 1.
2. Hypotheses The null hypothesis is that the proportion of M&Ms that are orange is
20%. The alternative hypothesis is that the proportion of M&Ms that are orange is
something other than 20%. In symbols:
H
0
: p = 0.20
H
A
: p 0.20
Model
Independence Assumption: It is reasonable to think that M&M colors are mutually
independent.
Random Sampling Condition: The 122 M&Ms we have can be considered
representative of all M&Ms.
10% Condition: 122 M&Ms is certainly less than 10% of all M&Ms.
Success/Failure Condition: np =122(0.20) = 48.8 and nq =122(0.80) = 97.6 , which
are both at least 10, so the sample is large enough.
The conditions are satisfied, so I can use the Normal model to perform a one
proportion z-test. Since we are testing the hypothesis that the proportion of orange
M&Ms is different than 0.20, we will use a 2 tailed test.

Conclusion The P-value is quite high, so we fail to reject the null hypothesis.
There is no evidence to suggest that the proportion of orange M&Ms differs from the
advertised 20%.

Intro Stats Quiz A Chapter 20 Name
According to a June 2004 Gallup poll, 28% of Americans said there have been times in
the last year when they havent been able to afford medical care. Is this proportion
higher for black Americans than for all Americans? In a random sample of 801 black
Americans, 38% reported that there had been times in the last year when they had not
been able to afford medical care.
1. Test an appropriate hypothesis and state your conclusion. (Make sure to check any
necessary conditions and to state a conclusion in the context of the problem.)
2. Was your test one-tail upper tail, one-tail lower tail, or two-tail? Explain why you
chose that kind of test in this situation.
3. Explain what your P-value means in this context.
