REPORT OVERVIEW
This statistics report was undertaken as a part of our class assignment and was to serve the
purpose the use of statistical tools in qualitative analysis while providing an overlook of the
degree of satisfaction of a small proportion of the students to the teaching methods employed at
the Department of Chemical Engineering NEDUET.
The data was collected by circulating survey forms among a sample of 100 students and the
data was tabulated and analysed using tools such mean, median, mode, kurtosis and
skewness. The
The report analysis the following areas:

Joining trends of students at NEDUET

Degree of satisfaction.

Deviation and dispersion of data.

Comparison of competencies among global students based on the comments of the

students.

Comments on the results obtained.

The survey compares the results among the students of second year (SE), third year (TE) and
final year (BE) both separately and simultaneously.

JOINING TREND
The interest of the students was analysed by asking them the reason for their joining
NEDUET.
The following questions were asked during the survey to see how the students were
joining the institution.
Q1) Have you willingly joined engineering?
a) Yes

b) No

Q2) Why do you want to be an engineer?

Based on the qualitative survey conducted, percentage satisfaction of each individual of SE, TE
and BE chemical is calculated. The mean percentage satisfaction is the weighted mean based
on the answers of Q3-Q7. Q8 is an opinion based question which has been asked for
suggestions to further improve education and particularly teaching system at NED University of
Engineering and Technology.

SE-CHEMICAL:

DEVIATIONS IN DATA
1. MEAN:
MEAN= fx/f =1570/32
MEAN=49.06%
2. MODE:
MODAL CLASS=45-55
MODE=50%
3. MEDIAN:

MEDIAN=l+h/f[f/2-CF]

MEDIAN=45+10/11[32/2-11]
MEDIAN=49.55%
Thus, we have found that the data collected for SE Chemical is symmetrical because

MEAN=MEDIAN=MODE
This is further illustrated in the following frequency curve which is a plot of x ivs f

PERCENTAGE SATISFACTION OF SE-CHEMICAL:

From the central tendency analysis, it can be stated that that the average satisfaction of
SE-Chemical student is 49.06%.

FREQUENCY CURVE:

1 =0
2 = FI*A2 / FI =8471.8752/32=264.7461
3 = FI*A3 / FI =8917.055/32=278.658
4 = FI*A4 / FI =7798589/32=243705.9
1= 3/ (2)3/2 =278.658/(264.7461)3/2 =0.064
2= 4/(2)2=243705.9/(264.7461)2=3.48
COMMENT:
The value of skewness is nearly 0, it can be concluded that that data is symmetrical
about the central value of mean, median and mode.

The value of kurtosis which is greater than 3 indicates that the frequency curve is
leptokurtic i.e. it is more peaked than the normal curve.

MEASURE OF DISPERSION:

STANDARD DEVIATION:
=2=264.7461=16.27%
Hence, the satisfaction with present education system of SE-Chemical students
deviates with a standard deviation of 16.27% from the mean of 49.06% satisfaction.

TE-CHEMICAL:

DEVIATION IN DATA
1. MEAN:
MEAN= 49.3
2. MODE:
MODE=62.5%

3. MEDIAN:
MEDIAN=l+h/f[f/2-CF]

MEDIAN=55.71%
Thus, we have found that the data collected for SE Chemical is asymmetrical and
skewed to the right

MEAN<MEDIAN<MODE
This is further illustrated in the following frequency curve which is a plot of x ivs f

PERCENTAGE SATISFACTION OF SE-CHEMICAL:

From the central tendency analysis, it can be stated that that the average satisfaction of
TE-Chemical student is 49.3%.

FREQUENCY CURVE:

X=49.3
1 =0
2 = FI*A2 / FI =385.2952
3 = FI*A3 / FI =-1077.36
4 = FI*A4 / FI =4714477.9
1= 3/ (2)3/2 =-0.142
2= 4/(2)2=3.175
COMMENT:

The value of skewness is nearly 0.142, it can be concluded that that data is
asymmetrical about the central value of mean, median and mode.
The value of kurtosis which is greater than 3 indicates that the frequency curve is
leptokurtic i.e. it is more peaked than the normal curve.

MEASURE OF DISPERSION:

STANDARD DEVIATION:
=2=385.2952=19.62%
Hence, the satisfaction with present education system of TE-Chemical students
deviates with a standard deviation of 19.62% from the mean of 49.3% satisfaction.

BE-CHEMICAL:

DEVIATION IN DATA
1. MEAN:
MEAN= fx/f =980/16
MEAN=61.25%

2. MODE:
MODAL CLASS=60-70
MODE=65%
3. MEDIAN:
MEDIAN=l+h/f[f/2-CF]

MEDIAN=55+10/9[16/2-4]
MEDIAN=63.33%
Thus, we have found that the data collected for BE Chemical is skewed towards left
because

MODE>MEDIAN>MEAN
This is further illustrated in the following frequency curve which is a plot of x i vs. f

PERCENTAGE SATISFACTION OF SE-CHEMICAL :

From the central tendency analysis, it can be stated that that the average satisfaction of
BE-Chemical student is 65%. In this case, mode is the best measure of central
tendency as indicated by data.

COMMENT AND ANALYTICAL

RESULTS
Highly opinionated results were obtained among the students of a particular year and
agreeing results were obtained for some of the different aspects among the students of
different years. BE was the most satisfied classroom with a satisfaction percentage of
65. TE and SE showed 49 % satisfaction.
The data from TE was most scattered, i.e. their opinions were the most varied amongst
which is exhibited by their frequency distribution curve. They showed a standard
deviation of over 19%.
Depending on the results and the multiple bar diagrams we can deduce certain results,
students are joining engineering willingly and with aspiration. Mostly students are
partially agreeable with the opinion that optimum grooming opportunities are provided
and mostly say that marking criteria and teaching methods need improvement. A very
high percentage of population said that the examinations were limited to lectures, the
results from BE gave a 100% trend here.
On the basis of these trends steps can be taken to overcome the shortcomings.
Lecture based learning and examination pattern should be terminated.

Sessionals distribution should be based on practical learning. An example of it is

this statistical report, requiring an application of the various tools acquired during
the course term to the practical problems in our vicinity. More of such activities
should be encouraged for sessional marking criteria.
One of the main causes highlighted in this survey for the causes of the
dissatisfaction was the pre-university education. This can be linked to the
admission criteria in this university. Appropriate measures should be taken to
shortlist the candidates how have undergone optimum grooming prior to the
university. Such steps involve additional entrance test weightage and more
personality oriented interview sessions.
Additional collaboration with national and international universities.
