Third Sunday of Lent

Some of you may be old enough to remember the Rolaids commercial that cleverly asked a simple question: How do you spell relief? R-O-L-A-I-D-S! was always the enthusiastic response. Well, acid indigestion is one thing but a thirsty SOUL is a whole different matter! From the moment we come into this world one of the very first things that we become aware of is our thirst! Only mom, or a necessary substitute, can satisfy the newborn. Instantly the desperate crying stops as the child tastes and sees that mommy is good! When the baby has had her fill before you know it, she is sound asleep! Her thirst, quenched, her hunger satiated, her heart and mind, at peace. Ahhh! Life is good for now! When she awakens, new thirsts will come to mind and once again a cry will be raised for relief! Can you relate? Of course, you can. You are a human being and thirsting is part of human condition. We are a race of people always on the way and not having quite arrived because heaven still awaits us. While we dont stay infants forever we do experience this cycle of dissatisfaction, then crying out (complaining), searching for a remedy to our thirst/hunger and finally relief, calm and contentment. How do you spell relief for your soul? If we are wise with the psalmist we cry Oh, God you are my God, for you my soul is thirsting! Psalm 63:1. God is the only one who can satisfy our deepest thirst. Like the Samaritan woman we must take the risk of discovering this for ourselves by willingly entering into dialogue with the King of Kings and realizing just how much he thirst for us! Yes, the Lord thirsts for you! Today, even before you have the opportunity to speak of your thirst for His love, His joy, His peace and His presence, He says to us: I thirst for you. Will you give me a drink? Will you hear his cry? Dont be surprised that if you ask Christ how he spells relief that he spells out YOUR name! For the truth is that only you can satisfy Christs thirst you; and only He can satisfy your thirst for Him? Copyright Father Patrick A Smith, 2014

The Light is On For You

The deepest spiritual joy each of us can sense is the freedom from whatever would separate us from God and the restoration of our friendship with so loving and merciful a Father(Cardinal Donald Wuerl). Sin alienates us from God, our loved ones, even our very selves. And once we start on the wrong path, we often find ourselves digging the hole weve put ourselves in even deeper, in a futile effort to rescue ourselves. Then, we tell ourselves were trapped with nowhere to run, no place to hide, and no one capable of helping us. God, in his merciful love, has given us a path to freedom in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Come and remove any self-imposed barriers to New Life in Christ by making a good confession
