processing projects and activities. Established as the first private sector bank fully owned by

Bangladeshi entrepreneurs, NBL has been flourishing as the largest private sector Bank with the

passage of time after facing many stress and strain. The members of the board of directors are

creative businessmen and leading industrialists of the country. To keep pace with time and in

harmony with national and international economic activities and for rendering all modern

services, NBL, as a financial institution, automated all its branches with computer networks in

accordance with the competitive commercial demand of time. Moreover, considering its forth-

coming future, the infrastructure of the Bank has been rearranging. The expectation of all class

businessmen, entrepreneurs and general public is much more to NBL. Keeping the target in

mind, NBL has taken preparations to open 15 new branches and 5 SME centers by the year 2009.

In addition, we are further expanding our presence through developing and expanding the SME

financing, Any Branch Banking and Off-shore Banking facilities.

The emergence of National Bank Limited in the private sector was an important event in the

Banking arena of Bangladesh. When the nation was in the grip of severe recession, the

government took the farsighted decision to allow the private sector to revive the economy of the

country. Several dynamic entrepreneurs came forward for establishing a bank with a motto to

revitalize the economy of the country.

National Bank Limited was born as the first hundred percent Bangladeshi owned Bank in the

private sector. From the very inception, it was the firm determination of National Bank Limited

to play a vital role in the national economy. We are determined to bring back the long forgotten

taste of banking services and flavors. We want to serve each one promptly and with a sense of

dedication and dignity.

The then President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Justice Ahsanuddin Chowdhury

margins in volatile market conditions and adequate Balance Sheet growth during the period.

Being a regular tax payer, we have made a direct contribution to Government Exchequer of Tk.

761.70 million in the calendar year 2008 against Tk. 449.70 million in the previous year,

registering a staggering growth of 69.38 percent.

National Bank, has now acquired strength and expertise to support the banking needs of the

foreign investors. NBL stepped into a new arena of business and opened its Off Shore Banking

Unit at Mohakhali to serve the wage earners and the foreign investors better than before.

Since its inception, the bank was aware of complying with Corporate Social Responsibility. In

this direction, we have remained associated with the development of education, healthcare and

have sponsored sporting and cultural activities. During times of natural disasters like floods,

cyclones, landslides, we have extended our hand to mitigate the sufferings of victims. It

established the National Bank Foundation in 1989 to remain involved with social welfare

containing its Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss Account. In recognition of this, NBL was

awarded Crest in 1999 and 2000, and Certificate of Appreciation in 2001 by the Institute of

10 | P a g e
To make the Report more meaningful and presentable, two sources of data and information have

been used widely.

Both primary and secondary data sources were used to generate the report.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The main limitation of the study is lack of information provided by the organization. National

Bank Limited was very cooperative with us in making this assignment but due to its company

rule and insecurity in the market caused this obstacle that we could not overcome.

Other limitations of this study are:

• It is impossible to properly complete this type of report, because Information is not

processed through computer.

• Printed data are not available for preparing the report.

• It was very much costly to collect data.

• Less analytical power

11 | P a g e
• Non-cooperative behaviour of some officials of the bank.

Chapter – 03 {Comparison & Analysis}

SELECTION PROCESS - THEORY

Successful selection activities entail a lot of careful planning & careful thought. The standard

pattern of selection activities are of seven steps, which are given below:

SELRCTION PROCESS – NATIONAL BANK LIMITED

12 | P a g e
National Bank Limited recruits employees on the basis of newspaper circulation & by online e-

application on National Bank Limited’s web site. At the e-application section candidates are

obligatory to drop their CV & on the foundation of National Bank Limited’s vacancy &

precedence candidates are required to follow their selection procedure as follows :

Step 1: Completed application

The application form is given in the online and completely filled applications are carried forward

for the preliminary test (employment test).

Step 2: Employment test

The Human Resource department mails the admit card to the applicants who have completed the

online application successfully via post card. The questionnaire of the test is based on

mathematics, English and the respective job questions. It is usually held on 100 marks.

The employment test typically holds in any government major educational center. Such as

teachers training college of Dhaka, etc.

Step 3: Comprehensive interview

13 | P a g e
The applicants passed in the employment written test are called by the bank. They are mailed an

invitation for the viva-voce for their post. The applicants have to bring their original educational

certificates for producing the same before the interview committee.

The certificates are tested here with the application form information. And if any disparity is

found the applicant is not allowed confront the interview committee.

The passed applicants are given conditional job offer. For permanent job offer they have to pass

background examination & medical test steps.

Step 4: Background examination

The Human Resource Department scrutinizes the background of the applicant and tries to find

out all ins and outs of the respective applicant. The applicants are kept unknown about the

background enquiry source.

Step 5: Medical test

The applicants are to go for a medical check-up to the authorized medical center by National

Bank Limited. National Bank Limited does not carry the medical fees. It is to be carried by the

applicant himself.

The test report directly goes to the Human Resource Department and the applicants are not

permitted to see it.

Step 6: Permanent job offer

14 | P a g e
If the 6th, Background examination, and the 7th Medical test, steps are passed successfully,

Human Resource Department of National Bank Limited sends an ‘Appointment as

Probationary Officer’ letter.

At the amalgamation day, the applicants are bound to sign up a ‘Letter of Undertaking’ for five

years continuous service to the bank from the date of confirmation. If he leaves before

completion of 5 years confirmed service or during the probation period he will have t refund to

the bank 50% of total salary and allowances drawn to him.

COMPARISON

15 | P a g e
During preparation of the paper major differences between the concept of selection process &

practical selection process at the National Bank Limited were not of a major per cent age. The

differential works between National Bank Limited & theory are given below:

Comparison 1: Initial screening

Initial screening is the culmination of recruiting efforts, where potentially acceptable candidates

are reviewed. But National Bank limited begins their selection process by skipping initial

screening step to the next step.

Comparison 2: Completed application

Once initial screening step is completed, applicants are asked to complete the application form

given by organization. As for National Bank Limited the application form is given online on the

e-application section & if applicants are called by newspaper circulation they are required to

drop their CV at the office. Applicants CV are counted as application form of the organization

with information like job-performance-related synopsis of applicants, skill, adult life,

accomplishments, information the organization wants for vacant post.

Comparison 3: Employment test

Organizations historically relied to a considerable extent on intelligence, aptitude, ability, 7

interest tests to provide major input to the selection process. Handwriting analysis & honesty

tests have been used in attempt to learn about the applicant. As for National Bank Limited, the

Human Resource department mails the admit card to the applicants who have completed the

online application successfully via post card. The questionnaire of the test is based on

mathematics, English and the respective job questions. It is usually held on 100 marks.

16 | P a g e
The employment test typically holds in any government major educational center. Such as

teachers training college of Dhaka, etc.

Comparison 4: Comprehensive interview

Comprehensive interview is a selection device used to obtain in-depth information about a

candidate. By comprehensive interview effectiveness, realistic job previews & behavioral

interview are measured. At the National Bank Limited, the applicants passed in the employment

written test are called. They are mailed an invitation for the viva-voce for their post. The

applicants have to bring their original educational certificates for producing the same before the

interview committee.

The certificates are tested here with the application form information. And if any disparity is

found the applicant is not allowed confront the interview committee.

The passed applicants are given conditional job offer. For permanent job offer they have to pass

background examination & medical test steps.

Comparison 5: Background examination

Background examination is the process of verifying information job candidate provides. This can

include candidate’s former employers to confirm candidates work record & to obtain their

appraisal of his or her performance, educational accomplishments etc, At the National Bank

Limited, the Human Resource Department scrutinizes the background of the applicant and tries

to find out all ins and outs of the respective applicant. The applicants are kept unknown about the

background enquiry source.

17 | P a g e
Comparison 6: Medical/Physical test

Medical/physical test is the step where applicants’ physical fitness for essential job performance

is measured. In this step the theory & practical process is same. The applicants are to go for a

medical check-up to the authorized medical center by National Bank Limited. National Bank

Limited does not carry the medical fees. It is to be carried by the applicant himself.

The test report directly goes to the Human Resource Department and the applicants are not

permitted to see it.

Comparison 7: Permanent job offer

Individuals performing successfully in the preceding steps are now considered eligible to receive

employment offer as same process as the selection process of the National Bank limiteds. If the

6th, Background examination, and the 7th Medical test, steps are passed successfully, Human

Resource Department of National Bank Limited sends an ‘Appointment as Probationary

Officer’ letter.

But at the joining day, the applicant has to sign up a ‘Letter of Undertaking’ for five years

continuous service to the bank from the date of confirmation. If he leaves before completion of 5

years confirmed service or during the probation period he will have t refund to the bank 50% of

total salary and allowances drawn to him.

Chapter – 04 {Conclusion and Suggestion}

18 | P a g e
CONCLUSION

As a prospectus bank, National Bank Limited is performing sound in human resource practice as

well as operation & service sector. The overseas operation of the bank is a benchmark in the

banking sector of Bangladesh. The applicant selection process at the National Bank Limited is

precise & easy to perform. The comprehensive interview, realistic job preview of the applicants

provides essentials information to the employers to perform the selection procedure successfully.

As we early said proper selection can minimize the costs of replacement & training, reduce legal

challenges, & result in more productive workforce, from previous study regarding the selection

process of National Bank Limited, we can easily conclude that the selection process of National

Bank Limited is successful not only in the countries perspective as well as the global perspective

which is also proved by National Bank Limited’s flourishing local & overseas operation.

SUGGESTION

Based on the above study we have made some suggestions or recommendations:

National Bank Limited can perform initial screening step in their selection process

because it’ll save time for the organization to select the best suitable applicant.

19 | P a g e
National Bank Limited should sorts the best according to the CGPA obtained and the

university ranking at the initial screening step.

National Bank Limited does not call the applicants. They only mail the invitation cards.

Sometimes mailing needs more time in our country. So they should start ‘Call The

Applicants’ system along with mailing the invitation cards.

The conditional job offer obtainers go for the medical test where the cost is borne by the

applicant. But it should be borne by the bank sothat it can increase the bank’s reputation.

The 5 years bond for is a great impediment for many of best applicants. They do not to

stick themselves into any bounding. So the bank should lessen the time period of

bonding or call off the bond signing.
