Saint Michael Parish Mission Statement:
We the parishioners of Saint Michael the Archangel, through leadership and strong traditions
are faithful disciples of the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. We commit our-
selves to be generous stewards of our faith, our parish, and our community. We strive to involve all
members to be united in one parish family for the salvation of all.

Notes from the Pastor: March Madness for God activities are over! Actually, some people wanted
to call it instead March Marvels! That makes more sense. Its because of the many wonderful spir-
itual opportunities that had been afforded us this month and some have availed of and have relished
the truly spiritually enriching experience! Last Saturdays Pilgrimage Tour was one of those! Every-
body in the group were fired up with the visit of the cathedral and learned of all the history and all the
meaning of the symbols of most parts of our mother church! Also enlightening is listening to the life
of Fr. Email Kappaun, who was given the title Servant of God in 1993 and seeing first hand all the
personal items that are connected to him. Do you know that there are already miracles attributed to
his intercession, including healing? You may access our diocesan website and learn more about his
life! Fr. Kappaun, Pray for us! Last Tuesday, there was also a lively theological discussion with a
group led by Marcel Normand at Saint Joseph Hall. May it bear fruit among all those who attended.
For our last activity this month, our "Souper Friday at Saint Michael have inspired all the 35 people
who attended. Not only because the soup and bread were delicious, but the talk of Tom Racunas has
left a wonderful impression on all those present. Most of the pictures of the tour and the rest of our
activities are in our Facebook page for you to see and enjoy!
Let us thank the Lord for those moments of grace and may we continue to open up our minds and
hearts to the grace of God for penance and renewal as Lent is winding down to Easter! Once more,
thank you to all our councils, committees, and individuals- who dedicated their time, talent, and
treasure to make all those events a success! May God bless you always for all that you do!
Although the month is over, our pursuit of holiness continues! There are lots of things to look
forward to in April: April 4
th
, Friday, our men of That Man Is You will be hosting Fish Fry at
Saint Michaels Hall from 5:30PM to 7PM! Proceeds will go to assist our youth activities, including

Lent Isnt Over Yet; Theres Still Time...
Lent is now half over, but if we feel that weve not met its demand for pen-
ance and mortification (acts that strengthen the will to overcome sin), there is
still time. Through moral laziness, we often miss out on opportunities to gain
indulgences during this season. Our parents and grandparents looked forward
to this time, often fasting the whole of Lent and their faith was strengthened
by their self-denial.
We may ask, Isnt heartfelt repentance sufficient for God? Or does he also
want bodily mortification? The Church answers simply that God requires
both because sincere repentance is ever united to bodily mortification. Put
another way: The soul influences the body and the body reacts upon the soul,
because of their intimate union. A body that is always gratified and pam-
pered, sooner or later, reveals its own feebleness to the soul, its constant
companion. The body, because of Original Sin, is in permanent rebellion
with the soul; and the soul, therefore, must treat it almost as an enemy and be
always on guard against it.
With the time left in Lent, lets unite body and soul to show our love for
Our Blessed Lord and what He has done for us. Keep the eyes of our body
and soul always directed toward heaven, and lets double our efforts to help
make up for so many indifferent people in the world today. Sin is viewed all
too lightly in our time. The tendency is to excuse everyone for everything,
including ourselves. Our Lord never excused anyone! He forgave, yes, but in
every instance, He always gave the directive: Go now, and dont commit
this sin again, or simply, Go and sin no more. Sin is a great destroyer,
even in this world, and only in its absence can any healing take place. Be
faithful to frequent Confession and you will be a great helper in healing the
many wounds which afflict our nation.
The Body will return to dust; therefore, it is wrong to pamper it.
The Body will rise in glory; therefore, it is wrong to neglect it.
During Lent, the World joins the Pharisees in saying, If you are the Son of
God, come down from the Cross. Jesus says, If you would be a Son of
God, take up your Cross. Lent is Cross-time! Satans way is the way of
pride; remember the popular song a few decades ago, What more, I did it
MY way. Christs way is one of humility. During Lent, our choice should be
to live as God wants us to live, turning from our own self-will. To get this
done, we must imitate Christ and His Grace will help us to walk the path
leading to Heaven. (and hey, theres talk that if youre extra virtuous, you
might even skip purgatory!)
One more thing, we want to thank those who made the Theological Dia-
logue on Tuesday evening possible. Karen Pryer, co-chair of the 50th Anni-
versary Committee, planned the event with Fr. Roger. We had some 18 pa-
rishioners from Arma, Frnaklin, and Girard who came to the hall after Mass
and Stations to hear the talk. Karen arranged for refreshments. We had a live-
ly discussion on Lent and hopefully, all of us gained from airing our thoughts
on penance and mortification. Watch for the first of the Anniversary News-
letters to appear in April. Article by Marcel Normand

Shopping for a Cross
Jesus commanded his followers, Take up the cross and follow me (Mark
10:21). But too many of us want to go shopping for just the right cross rather
than take up the cross of self-denial to which He referred.
Some people want a vinyl-padded cross that not too heavy. Others look for
a small, flat cross which they can put out of sight when they dont want to
attract attention to the fact that they are Christians. Still others look for a jew-
eled cross which can make them part of the fashionable in-crowd.
But the cross of authentic Christian discipleship is a plain, rough, wooden
cross that takes a lot of effort to carry. This is the type of cross of which Je-
sus was crucified. And this is the cross of discipleship which we as his fol-
lowers must carry. But one important difference is that Jesus himself has
promised to stand with us and help us bear the load. The one who directed,
Take up the cross also declared, My yoke is easy, and my burden is
light (Matt. 11:30). Author Unknown

Also, many of you have already read the news in the
Catholic Advance about the increase of mass stipends ef-

be $10, but any intentions already accepted at the old rate

made.) (from the minutes of the college of consultors.)
You will find an insert of this weekends bulletin of the
statement of the bishops of the dioceses of Kansas for a
clearer understanding of mass offerings.
I would also remind you of the letter of Madison Smith asking
for help for her missionary trip to Rwanda in summer. Either
you give it directly to her family or you may write a check paya-
ble to Saint Joseph or Saint Michael, memo: for Madison Smiths
Mission.
Finally, may this remaining days of Lent continue to steer us to
reflect more deeply on our relationship with God and each other
so that on Easter we will be able to renew our baptismal promises
with minds and hearts renewed. God bless you all! Fr. Roger
