What is an OB/GYN?
Obstetrics and gynaecology (or obstetrics and gynecology; often abbreviated to OB/GYN, OBG, O&G or Obs & Gynae) are the two surgicalmedical specialties dealing with the female reproductive organs in their pregnant and non-pregnant state, respectively, and as such are often combined to form a single medical specialty and
Gynecology
-The medical practice dealing with the health of the female reproductive system (uterus, vagina, and ovaries). Literally, outside medicine, it means "the science of women". Gynecology is typically considered a consultant specialty. They must see a family doctor prior to seeing a gynecologist.
Basic Procedures
Appointments- Appointments are made over the phone. When a person calls we get all of their information so that we can put them in the system. They also receive the appointment letter in the mail so that they can bring their paper to confirm their appointment. Appointments are booked almost everyday of the month starting as early as 8 o'clock in the morning until the last patient is out of the clinic. Sign In- When the patient comes in the clinic for their appointment, they have to use their appointment cards & slide it in a system to let the receptionist know they are here. Once they have done so they are sent to the front window where the receptionist is & sign all of their paperwork. Once they are finished they have to sit in the waiting room until one of the nurses calls their name to go to the back. Discharge- Once the doctor has seen the patient and everything is done, the patient will then go back to the waiting area so that they can be discharged. A patient is not allowed to leave with a discharge notice because of special circumstance. The purpose of discharge is to let that person know that they are fine for that day.
Procedures We Experienced
Ultrasound
Colposcopy
LEEP Procedure
Colposcopy- The direct magnified inspection of the surface of a womans genital area, including the cervix, vagina, and vulva, using a light source and a binocular microscope. Doctors use the test to evaluate potentially cancerous areas, typically after a pap smear has indicated the possibility of a problem. Your doctor also may perform a biopsy (take a sample) of an abnormal area during the procedure.
LEEP Procedure-Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) uses a wire loop heated by electric current to remove cells and tissue as part of the diagnosis and treatment for abnormal or cancerous conditions in a womans lower genital tract.
Vitals
Vital signs include your heart rate, breathing rate, temperature and blood pressure. Your healthcare provider may watch, measure, or monitor your vital signs to check your level of physical function. What did I learn about vitals? - I learned how nurses check a patient's vital signs and how they record the results on paper and electronically. They prepare the patient to be seen by the doctor and report any abnormal findings.
Lab Experience!
During our time at the OB/GYN clinic we had the opportunity to be in the lab area where we learned:
-How Blood is Drawn -Where Blood Samples are stored -How Urine/Stool samples are stored -The Blood Bank location and procedures -Proper labeling of ALL samples given in the clinic -Techniques used to find a vein to place the needle -How to record all test that are administered -Proper disposal of all used equipment
