family.

Notes from the Pastor - Congratulations to four of our kids in Arma who made their first reconcilia-
tion Saturday, April 5
th
: Talon Bonine, Cody Burns, Autumn Calgary, and Drake Kutzman. Con-
gratulations also to their parents for making this possible and for fulfilling their promise to the Church
during their wedding and when the kids were baptized to bring them up in the Catholic faith. Congrat-
ulations and thank you also to all our catechists for their sacrifice of their time, talent, and treasure to
teach these kids every Sunday! God bless you a hundredfold as He has promise! As we have men-
tioned last weekend, also four kids in Girard will be making their first reconciliation next Saturday.
We will publish the names next weekend. Include them in your prayers.
Please continue to pray for our Elect, five of them, who will be receiving the sacraments of baptism,
confirmation, and communion this Easter Vigil. May they persevere in their desire and continue to
open up their minds and hearts to the grace of God.
We miss to send parish representatives to the Diocesan Stewardship Conference Saturday, April 5

This is a reminder to all of us that there are still lots of things we need to do in our parish. One for sure
is strengthening our stewardship committee to facilitate all the stewardship related activities. At Saint
Josephs, in fact, we still have to organize that committee! Any volunteer? Please let me know!
Our sympathy and prayers for Jeff DeGarmo and his family for the passing away of his grandmoth-
er, Helen Dumm last Monday. Her funeral was last Wednesday! Also sympathies to Alban Madl and
his family for the passing away of his wife Catherine Madl last Friday morning, April 4

is set for next week either Friday morning, April 11
th
, viewing at 10AM and mass at 11AM, all at

As An Individual Lives, So Shall He Die
This article is about our privileges and duty to attend Mass. We all know
Catholics who do not come to Mass. We ask ourselves why. There are many
reasons given, but it boils down to carelessness, laziness, worldliness, and a
lack of moral backbone. Ive asked priests this question and most of them
believe lack of attendance might be the pursuit of a sinful life. Sin becomes a
habit, no matter which kind, and it works against the individuals return to
Mass. Youve heard the excuses: Priests are in it for what they can get, or
Its just a racket and I dont believe in it any longer. Fr. John Reinkemeyer
once told me a true story about a young man, a student, who stopped attend-
ing Mass and just abandoned his faith. He had similar excuses. Some months
later, he was about to be arrested on a paternity charge. He seized an automo-
bile and tried to escape the police, but rounded a curve at full speed, over-
turned, was pinned underneath and badly mangled. God, he cried to the
state trooper who had caught up with him, Get me a priest. Im dying and I
need a priest! With eternity closing in upon him, he threw aside his mask of
make-believe and faced the terrible reality. Blood was flowing from open
wounds in his neck. The trooper sped to the nearest Catholic Church and
returned with a priest. The young man was barely conscious with his glassy
eyes distorted with the wild look of horror that came to him as he realized he
was dying in mortal sin!
The priest bent over him to hear his confession. God! God!, he was mur-
muring half unconsciously, Its too late, too late. A few convulsive twitch-
ings and he was dead. Scripture tells us, As a man lives, so shall he die
This young man was unwilling to make his conduct conform to the moral
code of his religious faith, so he sought to destroy his faith, saying, Its all
bunk, Its all a racket. Father reminded me that this was not an isolated
case, for he had seen it duplicated many times during his many years as a
priest.
As practicing Catholics, we are aware that we have an obligation to assist
at Mass on weekends and Holy Days. It is the central act of our worship. The
Mass continues the sacrifice of the Cross throughout the centuries. On the
Cross, Christ offered himself to glorify the Father and make reparation for
sin; in the Mass, Christ still offers himself for these same reasons. It is an
incredible privilege to join with Christ in his sacrifice and to offer ourselves
along with Him, then receive our risen Lord, the body and blood of Christ, in
Holy Communion. Just as we recall great events in our history such as Inde-
pendence Day, we perpetuate the memory of what occurred then with some
sort of 4th of July anniversary celebration. Jesus was aware of the human
tendency to forget and so His own arrangement was to give us the Mass to be
a daily renewal of his Sacrifice on Calvary. In this way, His redeeming work
is made present for us so that we might be able to share in the benefits of that
redeeming death. By the Mass, we cannot forget His death, and He doesnt
forget our present needs. It is our duty as Catholics to join in this weekly
celebration. Many Catholics assist at Mass whenever it is offered. It is the
greatest prayer. Article by Marcel Normand

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows,
and acquainted with grief; and we his as it were our
faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows;
Yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised
for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him;
and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have
gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way;
and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
-Isaiah 53:3-6
