This lesson is a social studies lesson that has been geared for 5th grade students to learn about how advertisement is a part of our economic life. This lesson uses the textbook Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies: 25 Strategies for K-8 Inquiry-based Learning (p. 137-142). C. Basic Information: Grade Level: 5th Grade Time to Complete this Lesson: 50 minutes Groupings: Whole group during initial instruction, small groups after whole class discussion

D. Materials: Pen/ Pencil Modern example of an advertisement Reproduction of vintage product advertisements Colored Pencils Large, white construction paper (9 X 12 inches) E. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards

E11.5.5 Describe what it means to compete, and give examples of ways sellers compete.
o Student-Friendly Standards I know what it means to compete in a business and I can give examples of how businesses compete for business through advertisements.

F. Vocabulary Advertisement- A poster or commercial to persuade a consumer to buy a product Business- A company which sells a specific product or a multitude of products.

G. Procedure: 1. As a whole group, show a modern day advertisement that the students can relate to. 2. Discuss how advertisements influences people to buy certain products over another.

3. After discussion, the students will get into small groups of no more than 4 students. o o They will be given a vintage advertisement from a different era to discuss in their groups Incorporate a small index card with the year of the advertisement and several important elements of the time period to help discussions

4. The students can discuss what all the advertisements have in common and what makes them effective 5. The students will then create their own original advertisement. o This should include: An image of the product A product description Benefits Pricing information

6. If time permits the students can share their advertisements and the class can vote on what product they would want to buy based on the advertisement. H. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I would use their advertisements to assess what they understand. This will show me what they understand about businesses and their competition to one another through advertising. They should be able to show what makes a good advertisement. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students will be able to tell how businesses compete for business through advertisements. I. Closure: The students will vote on which product they would choose and what made them make that decision.

J. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? The easiest part will be teaching about the requirements of a good advertisement. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The hardest part will be teaching the students how to present their advertisements and persuade their audience based on their advertisements 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?

I can extend this lesson by having the student think about different businesses that compete against one another and how each bring in their own customers 4. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I can pull students who dont understand the concept into small groups with me to help provided reinforcement. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? The ending of the lesson with the presentation may have to moved to another day if the time does not permit it. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The standard was the most difficult part when writing this lesson. 7. Explain the strategy from Integrating Language Arts & Social Studies that you included in this lesson plan. I used strategy number 19. This strategy uses advertisements to help teach the concept.
