NEIGHBORHOOD HAPPENNINGS
A soccer family in the neighborhood is starting Friday afternoon soccer games in the park by the playground. Everyone is welcome! There are no set teams, no uniforms, and any age or skill level may participate. Come and go as you please every Friday starting April 1st from 4:30 p.m. until around 6 p.m. What a fun new way to meet your neighbors! 4TH ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT UPNA will host an Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m. There will be eggs for hunting in two age categories. Children 5 and under will find their eggs in the new playground area and the 6-10 year olds will hunt for their eggs throughout the park. Bring your Easter baskets and come out and enjoy a fun time with your children and neighbors. The Easter Bunny will be there!!! COAST-TO-COAST US 50 GREAT YARD SALE This will be University Parks fourth year participating in this event. Having numerous garage sales all in one weekend draws many shoppers to our neighborhood. The dates this year are Friday and Saturday May 16 & 17, 2014. In addition to the national advertising this event receives, the UPNA will pay to advertise in the local papers so no one will have to place ads on their own. Printed address lists will be available at the entrances to our neighborhood as well published on our blog for buyers. You can sign up by emailing upna@comcast.net or writing to UPNA at P.O. Box 11896, Pueblo, CO, 81001. Sign up early! Deadline to get on the list is May 11. Each individual seller will be responsible for their own permits and sales taxes associated with their sale. You may participate one or two days, just let us know when you sign up. So dig out your unused items, it could be just one or two or a whole garage full, that will become others treasures and take advantage of this national event. THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY (OUR NEIGHBORHOOD LAWNS) The majority of homeowners in University Park are very good about maintaining their lawns. A smaller percentage have let weeds infect their turf and thats bad. Then there is the ugly, which has become a huge problem. Neighborhood covenants require that all homes have a minimum of 2500 sq. ft. of front yards that are comprised of grass. It is not permissible to be a lot owner in this neighborhood and not comply with the covenants. Bad and ugly lawns are negatively affecting our property values more than any other covenant violation. If youre one of those homeowners that has a bad or ugly lawn, maybe you could get advice from your neighbor with the good lawn! You can also contact UPNA at upna@comcast.net for resources to help you with your lawn renovation. Please honestly evaluate your lawn and if its bad take steps to comply with the covenants. Now is the perfect time to plant a new lawn, install sod or re-seed in bare areas in an established lawn. Its really not that difficult to have a good lawn!

9 am until dumpsters are full

Yard Waste: Get busy cleaning up your yard, trimming those bushes, tree suckers and dead branches and take advantage of this opportunity to have them mulched. Dumpsters are expensive, therefore we ask that if you havent paid your dues you consider doing so or at least make a donation to help defer the costs of the dumpsters. El ect ronics Recycl in g: Southern Colorado Services & Recycling for Blue Star (certified hard drive destruction) will be accepting old TVs, computer equipment, etc for a minimal fee. Paint Recycling: Cost is $1 per gallon. Southern Colorado then employs developmentally disabled adults to remix and sell. Scrap Metal: Get rid of any scrap metal (old swing sets, barbecue grills, lawn mowers, appliances, hot water heaters, motors, cast iron sinks, all aluminum, even junk cars!). The list goes on. Not sure, call Dionosios at 544-3488.

Landscaping with Edibles by Scott & Donna Root

In the past year several individuals in the University Park area have expressed an interest in incorporating edibles into their backyard landscaping schemes. Some of the benefits are: Vine ripened fruits and veggies maximize their nutrient density and taste much better than their grocery store counterparts. Whether you incorporate a few edibles, a couple raised beds or a full blown garden in your backyard, watering requirements can most often be met with your current irrigation system so your water bill will stay the same. While there is an initial cost in set-up and some minor ongoing maintenance, the financial payback is quick and steady. Children benefit greatly from gardening. It is wonderful to see the amazement in a childs eyes when they witness the seeds they planted sprout. Kids also gain a good sense for responsibility and respect for the natural world by learning where their food comes from. Most importantly, by growing food yourself you can control how the food that you consume is grown and what is used on it. Let's face it, most of us are proud of our landscapes and would like to keep them looking that way and there are literally hundreds of different fruits, vegetables, herbs and berries that produce beautiful foliage and flowers. With edible landscaping you are getting the best of both worlds - form and functionality! If you would like to learn more about your options for including edibles into your landscaping scheme, you can call:
