USDA Forecasts 2014 Global Rice Trade to Increase 6% to 40.9 Million Tons
Apr 14, 2014

The USDA expects global rice trade to increase to around 40.9 million tons in the calendar year 2014, up about 6% from around 38.7 million tons in 2013.Global rice trade will be driven by record imports by Sub-Saharan Africa and continued strong purchases by China, says the USDA. Rice exports by Argentina, Burma, Guyana, Pakistan, and Thailand are forecast to increase in 2014.The USDA has increased its rice export estimates for Pakistan based on larger supplies. Thailand's 2014 exports are estimated to increase due to increased sales of government-owned stocks and the suspension of the 2013-14 off-season Rice Paddy Pledging Program. Estimates for Guyana's 2014 exports are increased based on a larger crop forecast. However, the USDA expects Vietnam's 2014 rice exports to decline based on a recent slowdown in sales and lack of price competitiveness in many markets. The USDA expects China's 2014 rice imports to decline based on recommendations from the U.S. Agricultural Office in Beijing. Rice imports for Afghanistan are expected to decline in 2014 based on a larger crop. However, the USDA expects rice imports by the Philippines, Bangladesh and Vietnam to increase in 2014.

Vietnam MY 2013-14 Rice Exports May Drop to 6.5 Million Tons, Says USDA Post

Daily Rice E-Newsletter by Rice Plus Magazine www.ricepluss.com News and R&D Section mujajhid.riceplus@gmail.com Cell # 92 321 369 2874

The USDA Post says that Vietnam's milled rice exports are likely to decline to about 6.5 million tons in MY 2013-14 (January 2014 - December 2014), down by about 3% from an estimated 6.7 million tons in MY 201213 due to strong competition from Thailand, India, Pakistan and other new exporters such as Cambodia and Myanmar.Vietnam exported about 6.68 million tons of rice in MY 2012-13, down about 13.5% from about 7.72 million tons in the previous year. The Post says that the decline is mainly due to lower exports to Asian countries. It says that Vietnamese total rice exports to Asia declined to about 4 million tons in MY 2012-13, down about 30% from about 5.75 million tons in MY 2011-12. Exports to Australia in MY 2012-13 also declined to about 20,776 tons, down by about 31% from 30,271 tons in MY 2011-12. However, rice exports to Africa increased to about 1.83 million tons in MY 2012-13, up about 20% from about 1.52 million tons in the previous year. Exports to Europe in MY 2012-13 more than doubled to about 206,748 tons while those to Americas increased by about 46% to about 480,033 tons in MY 2012-13, says the Post. The Post reports that Vietnams total milled rice production in MY 2013-14 is likely to reach around 27.8 million tons (about 44.5 million tons of paddy rice), up by about 1% from around 27.5 million tons (about 44.3 million tons of paddy rice) in MY 2012-13 due to an estimated 20,000 hectare increase in MY 2013-14 spring crop harvested area. However, the Post expects the paddy rice planting area to decline to 7.81 million hectares in MY 2013-14, down about 52,000 hectares from about 7.86 million hectares in MY 2012-13 due to government plans to shift acreage from rice to other cash crops. The Post estimates rice consumption Vietnam to decline to about 21.5 million tons in MY 2013-14, down about 2% from about 21.9 million tons in MY 2012-13. However, the Post estimates that the country would need an additional 500,000 tons of rice for total consumption due to increased usage of rice for animal feeds and in beer and wine industries. The Post forecasts Vietnams MY 2014-15 milled rice production at about 27.8 million tons (about 44.5 million tons of paddy rice) with expected higher yield offsetting the smaller production area of winter and autumn crops. The Post expects Vietnam's MY 2014-15 rice exports at 6.7 million tons due to expected low carryover stocks from MY 2013-14.

Pakistan Rice Exporters Urge Government to Improve Seed Research

Apr 14, 2014

Pakistan rice exporters have urged the government to focus on new seed research to increase rice production and exports, according to local sources.A Pakistan rice exporter says that Pakistan's research on new rice seeds is behind other Asian countries such as India. He adds that the use of quality seeds along with better usage of water and fertilizers can boost rice production levels in Pakistan. Better production would lead to better incomes to farmers, he adds. He also urged the government to involve private sector to conduct research on new seeds. The exporter reiterated that Pakistan was lagging behind India due to a significantly low expenditure on research and consequently the quality of Indian basmati rice is higher than Pakistan's basmati. He noted that Pakistan needs to improve the quality of basmati rice as international buyers tend to compare Pakistan's basmati with Indian basmati, Pakistan and India being the only basmati growing countries in the world. He also added that Pakistan produces about 3.5 tons of basmati rice per hectare while India produces about 3.7 tons per hectare.According to the USDA, Pakistan is expected to produce about 6.4 million tons of rice in MY 2013-14 (November - October), up about 10% from about 5.8 million tons produced in the MY 2012-13. Pakistan's rice exports are expected to decline by about 3% to about 3.4 million tons in MY 2013-14 from about 3.5 million tons in 2012-13. Domestic consumption in 2013-14 is estimated at 2.6 million tons.

Indias Punjab Agricultural University Releases Blight-Resistant Rice Variety

Apr 14, 2014

Daily Rice E-Newsletter by Rice Plus Magazine www.ricepluss.com News and R&D Section mujajhid.riceplus@gmail.com Cell # 92 321 369 2874

Indias Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has released seeds of a new high-yielding and bacterial blightresistant rice variety PR 123.The new variety will help farmers due to its high yield which is about 0.5 tons per hectare more than average yield of 6.7 7.5 tons per hectare of other PR varieties. The PR rice cultivars were developed by PAU mainly to tackle bacterial blight. PAU claims that PR 123 resists the attack of all the ten presently prevalent pathotypes of bacterial blight pathogen in the Punjab state; the previous cultivars could resist up to eight pathotypes of bacterial blight pathogen in the state. PR 123 is a semi dwarf variety and matures in about 143 days (medium maturity group) after seeding, says PAU.The new variety is non-basmati rice but has extra-long slender (Length/Breadth) ratio of 3.73 and clear translucent grains. PAU says that PR 123 has excellent cooking and eating characteristics which will help traders. PAU Senior Rice Breeder says, This variety will prove very beneficial to the farmers on account of its higher paddy yield, shorter maturity period, disease resistance and to the traders due to its excellent quality characteristics.Seeds of PR 123 are available at Punjab Agricultural University and its Seed Farms in India.

India Plans to Improve Irrigation Facilities to Boost Rice Production

India is targeting to expand overall coverage of irrigation facilities to around 107 million hectares by 2017, up about 10% from current coverage of around 97 million hectares to boost production of rice and other food grains and to reduce dependency on monsoon rains, a government official told Reuters.Irrigation facilities not

only help protect farmers against droughts (as seen in 2009-10) and erratic monsoon (as seen in 2013), but also boost crop yields significantly. Total rice area in India stands at around 44 million hectares, of which about 24.4 million hectares (about 55% of total rice are) is dependent on rains. However, rain-fed areas account for only around 45% of Indias total rice production due to low productivity.Average rice yield in India stands at around 3.6 tons per hectare, below the world average of around 4.4 tons per hectare. Scientists in India say that productivity in rain-fed rice areas is very low (less than 0.98 tons per hectare), and this brings down the national average.India produces around 255 million tons of food grains annually, including about 105 million tons of rice. Officials say that the expansion of irrigation by 10% is expected to boost overall food grain production by around 10% as well. According to government sources, the optimum potential for irrigation coverage in India stands at around 149 million hectares.

Tanzania Promotes Commercial Farming, Irrigation Schemes to Boost Rice Production

Tanzania government is planning to promote about 25 commercial farming deals and enhance about 78 smallholder rice irrigation schemes across the country to boost rice production. The Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Development told local sources the initiative is part of realizing the Big Results Now (BRN) plan, which aims at accelerating agricultural development and rural transformation in the country. He also says that the government is keen to revive the rice processing industry with private sector participation and improving credit to the stakeholders of the country's rice sector by setting up the special window for agriculture at the Tanzania Investment Bank (TIB).The Minister said the government will also strengthen the capacity of the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) to buy and store sufficient grains consistent with national requirement. He stressed that Tanzania is endowed with abundant arable land and most of it is still unutilized.Tanzania is almost selfsufficient in rice and exports a small quantity of surplus rice. According to the USDA, Tanzanias rice production in MY 2013-14 (May April) is expected to reach around 1.2 million tons of milled rice against consumption needs of around 1.39 million tons. The countrys rice imports in MY 2013-14 are estimated at around 200,000 tons, while exports are estimated at about 30,000 tons.
