Lesson: Become an expert on the wellness wheel?

Standard 8: Advocacy Demonstrate advocacy skills for enhanced personal, family, community health

GLCES: 1.9 Predict the health benefits of eating healthy and being physically active; and the potential health consequences of not doing so. 1.11 Distinguish between facts and myths regarding nutrition practices, products, and physical performance. 1.7 Assess personal barriers to healthy eating and physical activity, and develop practical solutions to remove these barriers. 2.6 Describe financial, political, social, and legal influences regarding alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. 3.1 Explain the effects of violence on individuals, families, communities, and our nation. 3.14 Evaluate the characteristics of a conflict which must be managed rather than resolved. 4.1 Identify the characteristics of positive relationships, and analyze their impact on personal, family, and community health. 5.2 Explain the importance of regular health screenings or exams.

I. Behavioral Objectives a. Objectives: i. The students will work respectfully together to become an expert in their assigned wellness dimension by not arguing with each other and being an active member of the group. ii. The students will become experts in all dimensions of wellness by showing respect and paying attention the groups presenting

a. Assessment: During this lesson I will assess the students by observing their behavior while other groups are sharing their project. I will also assess the students by grading their project based of the projects requirements. II. Anticipatory Set: I will review the requirements of the project and allow the students to meet with their groups to prepare their presentation. Objectives Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is for the students to teach each other about the dimensions their group was assigned and for everyone to become experts on the wellness wheel. Input: Task Analysis: a. The students will enter class and met with their expert groups to continue to finish up their assignment. b. After a couple minutes of having the class journal I will review requirements of the project. c. Project: Students will be split up into expert groups; each group will be researching a different dimension of wellness. i. I will walk around with a hat and little pieces of paper with each dimension on it to determine the groups. d. Each presentation must include these five fact: i. What does your wellness dimensions consist off? ii. How Poverty affects your dimensions? iii. What are the possible solutions to overcome the effects of poverty? iv. How does your wellness dimension affect other dimensions? v. Find a real life example of how poverty affects your dimensions e. Along with the Weebly presentation each group must turn 2 additional questions that will be covered in their presentation for the unit test. f. Allow the students a little more time to work; before we start presentations. g. Start presentations by any group that wants to volunteer. h. If no one volunteers using Popsicle sticks to select what group will go. i. Have class ask the students any questions they might have. j. After presentations have students journal about what they learned about 2 wellness dimensions other than their own. This must be done before they leave.

Thinking Levels: i. Knowledge: Know the different dimensions of wellness. ii. Comprehension:. Discuss what parts of your life falls into each dimension. iii. Analyze: Compare how each dimensions plays a role in the others.

iv. Evaluation: Judge how living under the Poverty line can affect a persons life. b. Learning Styles/Accommodations: i. I will be using many different learning styles to accommodate to the students different learning styles. There will be use of weebly, journals, group work and presentation. c. Method and Materials: i. This lesson will consist of group work, presentation, and journaling ii. Materials 1. Computer 2. Weebly 3. Computer Lab VI. Modeling: a. I will demonstrate how to properly use a and create a Weebly b. Students will get a chance to present, and discussion with expert groups. Checking for Understanding: a. Answer groups questions. Guided Practice: a. Show students how to create a Weebly and review requirements of project. b. Walking around class making sure students are on task. Closure: i. Journal to leave question. 1. Pick a wellness dimensions that they just learned about and tell me everything they know about it or just learned.
