Annotated Bibliography for The Lady with the Dog

Anton Chekhov and the Lady with the Dog by Virginia Llewellyn Smith Review by: R. F. Christian. The Modern Language Review, Vol. 69, No. 4 (Oct., 1974), pp. 952953. Published by: Modern Humanities Research Association. JSTOR. Within this article I learned that the man in the story had a routine with his women, which is fairly true when you read the story. Departure between him and a woman is normal, but this one woman is who made a difference in his life. This source was very open about the kind of relationship the characters had, and the previous ones that described Demetri. Due to the way his life was lived, he always had a yearning for true love. But, what no one expected was for him to love a married, random woman, whom he saw walking her dog. This source gave me a better understanding and the bigger picture of why the situations between the characters happened the way they did. With that being said, I relied on the source a lot in order to get a feel into their life. It was a very unusual story, a man whom had no care for his wife, and a woman who was very ashamed of herself for doing something terrible to her husband. What they both couldnt deny was the love that grew for one another. This article helps you annotate that the couple was so wrapped up in miserable lives that their comfort was found in each other. Once they separated, they could never stop running back to each other. In the end the source gave me an overall summary of the short story in only one sentence: The final conclusion that emerges from the study is that true love always remained an unattainable dream

Hernandez 2 to Chekhov, and that by dying so young, after so short an experience of marriage, he was spared the need to live with love, and allowed to go on cherishing the vision of it.

Connolly, Julian W. "The Lady With The Dog." Masterplots II: Short Story Series, Revised Edition (2004): 1-3. Literary Reference Center Plus. (EBSCO) Web. 6 Apr. 2014. Viewing The Lady with the Dog as a psychological story really caught my attention. Once I started evaluating the article, I realized that the author was right. The way the characters yearn for each other, feel bad about what they did, or even feel too much for one another, it can really get to someone. This article focuses a lot on the themes within the story and how the author incorporated them inside. While reading the article, you simply feel the set up that could happen in even a real life situation. This source was reliable in the way that it made everything feel more realistic and brought you to the understanding behind the real meaning. Although Checkhov may have confused the feelings between the two characters while reading the story, the article breaks it down so that you really know what is going on. This credible source was given by my teacher and I could never go wrong again with picking such sources. There is so much being said by just one person that can change the way you view or think you know something in an instant. The article taught me a lot and made an impression by knowing exactly what parts to cover with this short story. A short story doesnt have to be so complicated, it was very simple to cooperate with the reading and relate to what the author of the article had to say.

New York: Norton, 2002. N. pag. Print. This source was basically one of the first main sources I used. Being that it is the book which contains all of the material I need, and also that it is just the best way to help get a clearer picture of what really goes down behind the story. Behind the story means, which literary terms will analyze it best, and whether a criticism suits it correctly. This source helped me a lot in that department, knowing where to read that way it was easier to understand what everything really meant. In other sources, you were able to read from a persons point of view, and how they saw the story in their own manner. But reading from a source that is actually published, in a book, in front of you, make this just a way more reliable. Its a very objective and straight to the point piece of work, especially when going one by one through the criticisms. What may be a downside is not having as much commentary on the story because it does help you acknowledge different aspects, but overall the goal of this source was met. It was my most used source, and will continue to be one that I will rely on.

Kisrovic Vol 102. Detroit: Gale, 2008. In this article Im torn between believing the writer of it, or into believing the feelings of the characters in the story. In the article they point out good points, one being that adultery for each character is seen in a completely different way. One being experienced and the other being

Hernandez 4 innocent. The places they came from reflects on how they portray themselves as they grow and in the world. Once they met, and had their ravish affair, they had to part. That is when we learn the man in this story really had feelings for this one woman, a married woman, and him a married man who had no business left with his wife. This article really shows you why they felt the way they did, and why one place could have so much meaning. This source was very credible, because of being shown examples and actually exploring for myself and believing why it was in the top sources to choose from. Compared to the other sources, this one actually gives its own opinion, one whom you could relate to and agree with. It was used to achieve the true meaning reflected in a story, and that is what it accomplished.

The Lady with the Pet Dog Ed. Tim Akers And Jerry Moore. Vol.5. Virtual Reference (Gale), Detroit: Gale Group (1999) Short Stories For Students .Web. April 1, 2014. The main points that this source was more into receiving was a summary of the story, and also what the characters were all about, the way the story was written, and where it was placed. What really caught my attention and helped me with my sources, was that the setting was found easily. To analyze this story I wanted to use plot and setting because where the story was set is how the it actually flows. First looking I just wanted to know more about the characters but instead I got even more, which is what helps me have a broad view of where Id like to reach with what I read. The source was reliable, could have gone more into details, or depth, of what the story represents and more about why the plot was structured into a certain way. It is a credible source because I was able to learn how to use it with an example at school, and that on the sheet of

Hernandez 5 paper is listed as one of the top ones to try. The goal was to learn more about the story, in different aspects, rather than just knowing what the story was about.
