Carpenter ENGL 101: Fall 2012 Portfolio 4: Research Work-Up The final portfolio for English 101 will include a research work-up for an 8-12 page paper that attempts to make an original argument over an instructor-approved topic. You will not actually write the 8-12 page paper, but you will research your topic and organize your ideas as if you were going to do so. This assignment is designed to help you develop a better understanding of the research process and to be able to recognize the components necessary for a successful research paper.

Format: All items should be typed, double-spaced, and submitted in standard MLA format. MLA format indicates that citations should be done in MLA style. Portfolio 4 Due: Friday May 3rd by 1:00 PM *See instructions for individual assignments on the following page.

Research Work-Up: Individual Assignments Topic Worksheet (25 points) 1. Turn in a completed copy of the Topic Worksheet (on Canvas). Your instructor will let you know if revision is necessary. Remember to pick a topic that is sufficiently academic for this project. Also, be careful to select a topic that you could safely tackle in an 8-12 page paper. In other words, dont try to tackle such broad topics as global warming or world peace. Preliminary Bibliography (20 points) 1. Search the library catalog, online databases, and the web for at least ten sources you could use as evidence in a paper over your chosen topic. Your sources should include: At least one source from a book you find in the library catalog or ILL. At least two sources from a journal (must be a peer reviewed academic article NOT a magazine article) At least one media source (video, recording, podcast, etc.).

2. Create a bibliography page using MLA style citations. Examples of each type of citation can be found in A Pocket Style Manual or the back of The Academic Writer. 3. Check out/save/print five sources to review lateryou will need these to complete the Annotated Bibliography Introduction and Outline (75 points) 1. Write an introduction for a research paper over your topic. Rememberyou are not composing the full paper. The introduction should include:
A title that catches the readers attention and gives them an idea of what is to come. An opening that pulls the reader into the essay. A clear thesis statement that makes an argument one way or the other

2. Write an Outline for the rest of the paper. Your outline should include all major points and should logically follow the argument asserted in your thesis statement. 3. Any material in your introduction or outline that came from sources MUST be cited in a Works Cited page included with this piece of the project.

Two of the five sources that you review should be peer reviewed journal articles. 2. Cite each book, article, or other resource using the appropriate documentation style.
3. Beneath each citation, write a 4-6 sentence summary of the source.
