Topic: Why women do not choose career in fields of Engineering and Technology?

John P. Dugan, Kimberly Q. Fath, Shannon D. Howes, Kathryn R. Lavelle, Joshua
R. Polanin. (2013) Developing the Leadership Capacity and Leader Efficacy of
College Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Fields. J ournal of
Leadership Studies 7:3, 6-23
online publication date: 1-Sep-2013.

This source was recently developed in 2013. It has been useful for determining
importance, challenges, different cultural and academic aspects of women being in
engineering and science fields. Various case studies and chapters and case studies
have helped in narrowing opportunities for female in leadership and workplace. This
book addresses multiple issues and highlights some things we tend to forget about
females in engineering.
I would like to use this book as one of my sources as it is v read in very relevant to my
inquiry project. It highlights all the issues I want the answer for. It is organized in a
logical order which makes it easier to scan through as well read in detail. The appendix
is in detail and precise as to which topic needs to be worked with.
This book is free online but creditable and reliable. There are various sources and
references to this book which makes it informative. The way females are portrayed in
science and technology today and various challenges they face, its important to shed
light on each minute problem. This is accomplished in this book which would be a
wonderful source to my inquiry project. Reading it more in depth and detail will give me
enough information.

Schfer, Andrea I. "A New Approach to Increasing Diversity in Engineering at the
Example of Women in Engineering." European J ournal of Engineering Education.
31.6 (2006): 661-671. Print.

I found this article in UNCC library database. This article was printed in 2006 and
is useful to determine gender bias and implement gender balance in the companies and
educational environment. The main purpose of this article is to define how American
school and work places need to expand from their traditional school setting and strive to
be a diverse place which is welcoming for female as well as male.
After reading this article it is pretty clear that many people believe that gender
bias is involved in fields of engineering, technology and sciences. It also states that
engineering has been portrayed as a masculine field for a long time which makes it
harder for females to get into. This article will be useful for my original question why
females are not going into fields of engineering, technology and sciences.
This article offers solution to the problem I have been researching. It gives
enough information about the topic and how diversity lectures can help make everyone
aware that gender bias is an issue which needs to be dealt with and improved upon.
This is a reliable source as I got it from uncc database which has well-known books and
journals.

Lpez-Sez, M, S Puertas, and M Sinz. "Why Don't GirIs Choose TechnoIogicaI
Studies? Adolescents' Stereotypes and Attitudes towards Studies Related to
Medicine or Engineering." The Spanish J ournal of Psychology. 14.1 (2011): 74-87.
Print.
This journal entry was published in 2011 in the Spanish journal of psychology. The
focus of this journal entry is to determine the gender bias in fields of engineering and
medicine. The author of this journal researched the amount of girls and boys in math
and science classes. It differs a whole amount. This specific journal entry deals with
adolescent view on medicine and technology and how their opinion is influenced at that
age.
This article is relevant to me as it will help me gain perspective on early influence of so
many things leading to females decision not going into science or engineering careers.
This journal describes that gender bias has started from a very young age and it has
affected a large amount of adolescents behavior towards science and engineering
fields. According to studies schools portray engineering and science as masculine
fields. Most females choose and are comfortable in fields and careers in humanities and
liberal studies making it harder to change their minds.
This article provided me with information to write my inquiry project and it is a
reliable source making it easier to write my project. Females are underpraised and that
is described in this article which could be incorporated in my article.

Jacobs, Janis E, Laura L. Finken, Nancy L. Griffin, and Janet D. Wright. "The
Career Plans of Science-Talented Rural Adolescent Girls." American Educational
Research J ournal. 35.4 (1998): 681-704. Print.
American resource journal posted this article in 1998. This every lasting
issue of parents struggle and prying in students life involving career choices. This article
focuses on how peer pressure and family pressure, cultural norms etc. can affect
decisions made my students.
Girls getting fewer opportunities in rural areas where public schools are not
that great makes their career choices different to the current situation. This also
destroys the bell curve as to which profession is chosen by females.
This is a good and reliable source I found from UNCC database which could
help me in my project.

Pollack, Eileen. "Why Are There Still So Few Women in Science?" The New York
Times. The New York Times, 05 Oct. 2013. Web. 17 Mar. 2014.
This article was in New York database and was published in October 2013. The main
purpose of this article is to answer the everlasting question of few women in science.
Studies show that females are less aware and show least interest in fields of
engineering and technology. This article proves and shows that there is bias for females
while pursuing masters or PHD.
New York Times is a good base resource to hear opinions on a large scale. This article
explains mysterious reasons for no female engineers. Some girls are not groomed from
childhood to take math and science level classes making it confusing for them when
they actually could be interested in this field.
NY times being one of my very favorite newspaper source it always amazes me how
much there is to offer in few pages. Girls graduating from Ivy League schools are also
concerned about the shortcoming of females in engineering and science. I hope this
reliable source helps me to write my inquiry project.
