CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): CA Content: 21.0 Students graph quadratic functions and know that their roots are the x-intercepts. 22.0 Students use the quadratic formula or factoring techniques or both to determine whether the graph of a quadratic function will intersect the x-axis in zero, one, or two points. 23.0 Students apply quadratic equations to physical problems, such as the motion of an object under the force of gravity. Common Core: A REI 4. Solve quadratic equations in one variable. a. Use the method of completing the square to transform any quadratic equation in x into an equation of the form (x p) 2 = q that has the same solutions. Derive the quadratic formula from this form. b. Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for x 2 = 49), taking square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula, and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize when the quadratic formula gives complex solutions and write them as a bi for real numbers a and b.

F IF 7. Graph functions expressed symbolically and show key features of the graph, by hand in simple cases and using technology for more complicated cases. a. Graph linear and quadratic functions and show intercepts, maxima, and minima. Big Ideas: How do we model relationships that are not linear? How do we solve quadratic equations? How do those solutions relate to the graph of a quadratic function? What does the graph of a quadratic function look like? How can we use that to model real life scenarios? Unit Goals and Objectives: Students will be able to graph a quadratic function and identify the vertex, axis of symmetry, x-intercepts, maximum/minimum. Students will be able to use a quadratic function to solve real life problems, including those involving thrown objects. Students will be able to solve quadratic functions using various methods, including square roots, factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula. Students will be able to derive the quadratic formula from completing the square.

Unit Summary: Students will explore the characteristics of quadratics using a webercise. They will learn about graphing quadratics using the problem of a thrown basketball. They will research the different methods for solving quadratic equations, and use this information to classify quadratic equations by the best method to solve each. Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Discussion: How do you describe the graph of a quadratic function? Think-Pair-Share: Square roots and quadratics Formative: Matching Activity Match graphs to equations Jigsaw Puzzle Equations and Solutions Sorting Activity Arrange the steps of deriving the quadratic formula in order Summative: Exam Solve quadratic equations by any method Angry Birds Project

Lesson 1 (teacher lecture) Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to graph a quadratic function and identify the vertex, axis of symmetry, x-intercepts, maximum/minimum. Students will be able to use a quadratic function to solve real life problems, including those involving thrown objects. Lesson 2 (webercise) Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to graph a quadratic function and identify the vertex, axis of symmetry, x-intercepts, maximum/minimum. Acceptable Evidence: Students will explain how the shape of a parabola changes based on changing each term in the function. Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction
Lesson Activities: Students will do a webercise to explore the basics of quadratic functions. They will use a graphing app to discover how changing each term affects the shape of the graph. They will compile their discoveries onto a worksheet.

Acceptable Evidence: Given a graphs, students will identify the key parts of the graph. Given quadratic equations, students will be able to graph.

Lesson Activities: Students will use a digital lecture and follow along with guided notes. The lesson has students think about if a basketball will make it in the basket based on half of its trajectory. The concept of a thrown basketball will introduce students to the parabola and teach them about the characteristics of the graph. They will answer questions periodically in groups/partners.

Students will be able to use a quadratic function to solve real life problems, including those involving thrown objects. Lesson 3 (graphic organizer) Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to solve quadratic functions using various methods, including square roots, factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula. Unit Resources:
Holt California algebra 1 (California ed.). (2008). Austin, Tex.: Holt, Rinehart and Winston.

Acceptable Evidence: Given a group of quadratic equations, students will categorize them according to the best method to solve each by. They will also solve them by their chosen method.

Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction

Lesson Activities: Students will research and explore each method for solving quadratics graphing, factoring, square roots, completing the square, and the quadratic formula. They will take a group of quadratic equations and arrange them according to the best method. They will then solve.
