Western Expansion
Lesson Title: Westward Expansion Website Grade Level/Subject Area: 4th/Social Studies

Standards: SS4H6:

The student will explain westward expansion of America between 1801 and 1861.
Essential Question: What factors led to the expansion of the United States? How did expansion effect the United States? Who was involved in the expansion of the United States? Lesson Objectives: By the end of the lesson the students will become familiar with several important figures involved in the expansion of the United States. The students will also become aware of the new territories and what their purchase did to the Americas. Performance Objectives: At the end of the lesson the student will be able to list several of the major figures and purchases during western expansion. They will also be able to describe the relationship between the settlers and the Native Americans.

Materials: Website, Poster Board, Colored Pencils, Rulers, Netbooks Procedures: Whole Group: The teacher will start by doing a KWL chart about the old west. The teacher will then take the students to the website. After touring the website the teacher will show the voicethread and the School House Rock song.

The teacher and students will then discuss the videos and see if they can fill out anything on the KWL chart. The teacher will then open the interactive map and s/he and the students will create a timeline together, and discuss the events.

Individual: The students will get out there netbooks and go to the nation geographic website The will complete the interactive Lewis and Clark story. The class will then reconvene and discus the choices that they made individually and why they made them and choices they think are the best and why.

Small Group: The students will then be broken up into small groups of four and be given Rulers, Colored Pencils, and Poster board. They will then have to create their own map to various locations around the school. They will also have to write an account of what they had to go through in order to get to each location, and the different people they encountered along the way

Assessment: Map Created and journal by students in the style of Lewis and Clark
