Business Architecture
A Practical Guide
Jonathan Whelan and Graham Meaden
Business Architecture is very challenging to do and even harder to describe, being inherently multi-dimensional in nature. The authors of this book have done well to distil their considerable experience into a handbook that provides valuable advice to help organisations develop their capability in managing business change. Sally Bean, Enterprise Architecture Consultant Organizations today exist in an environment of unprecedented change. They do so against a backdrop of a global, competitive marketplace, the fast-paced enablement of technology, amplied regulation and accelerating organizational complexity. Many organizations are addressing change in a sub-optimal way and they are operating without a clear view of where their operational risks lie. It is these dynamics that are leading organizations to recognise and embrace Business Architecture. With these challenges in mind, this book provides a practical guide on how to employ Business Architecture and how to build a balanced proposition that delivers value to a broad range of stakeholders. Whilst recognizing best-practice, this book explores a new, inspirational level of Business Architecture whilst acknowledging that the best way to realize the vision is one step at a time. Todays two most important business policy questions corporate social responsibility and corporate governance impact each other in both direct and subtle ways. This collection rejects the conventional idea that these are separate topics and explores their points of contact, linkages, and their points of divergence. The books broad and deep collection of ideas from around the world offer a complete, subtle and textured view of this critical intersection. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the modern business enterprise. Kurt A. Strasser, University of Connecticut, USA Written by experts from all over the world, A Handbook of Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility is the most authoritative single-volume guide to the relationship between good governance and social responsibility and the reality of managing both. In addition to the theory and practice of governance and CSR, the book includes case studies from large and small organizations and NGOs. Practical Wisdom is slowly becoming one of the more important issues in contemporary management thinking and this excellent new book is an ideal introduction to the topic. Covering all of the many facets and dimensions of this type of wisdom, it has the merits of being very clearly written and exceptionally well researched. I cannot imagine anyone not intrigued by the subject after reading it and then trying to do something to increase their own practice of wisdom. Highly recommended. Larry Prusak, Columbia University, USA This handbook serves as a medium for reassessing and rearticulating more responsible ways of praxis in the eld of organization and management. In this spirit, the chapters open a space for dialogue and debate. Rather than offering closure and nal answers, we expect this rst book in a new series to invite further inquiries, conversations and explorations by and among its readers: students, academics, and practitioners. the new volume is a worthy successor to its parent edition, and ttingly dedicated to the memory of John Ashurst. This work, like the others [in the Practical Building Conservation series], is a must have for any conservation professional, student, or conservation library. While its price might seem high, its value over the years will pay back the costs many times over. Architectural Technology Magazine Metals deals with the conservation of a group of materials that have been used in buildings for everything from structural components and xings to weatherproong, repairs, and decoration. It covers both the iron-based and the non-ferrous metals (such as copper, bronze and lead), in each case considering technological evolution, deterioration processes, and the practical application and long-term implications of the common conservation materials and methods. This work sits well on the shoulders of its predecessor, and like the rst edition, should become an essential part of the conservation professionals toolkit and a natural starting point for any research into stone and its conservation. Timber
English Heritage
I found the content of the book to be both interesting and very informative. It certainly made me wonder just how much we have wasted, in particular, through replacement of windows where simple professional repair would have been both more cost effective and would have retained the original features. It also made me think just how much money we waste on treatment of timber when if property surveys are carried out by the right people the solutions can end up far more cost effective and less destructive to the building fabric. Building Engineer Timber deals with wide-ranging use of the material in historic buildings, from vast structural timber-frames through to high-class joinery and simple xings. Particular attention is paid to how and why timber decays or faults occur, and the methods of assessing and dealing with this. The bulk of the book covers appropriate methods of repair and maintenance. Includes 515 colour and 31 b&w illustrations March 2012 Hardback 498 pages 978-0-7546-4554-2 65.00 / $124.95

The essays are reproduced in full in their original format using the facsimile method to facilitate easy and correct citation of the original essays.
The unique benet of these reference volumes is that they bring together the best of previously published research essays and articles in a specic subject area from a wide range of international sources which would otherwise be time-consuming, difcult and expensive to access. Students are therefore able to study inuential essays side-by-side whilst lecturers are provided with an invaluable one-stop teaching resource. New series published in 2013 include: 6-volume series: The Library of Essays on Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law 4-volume series: The Rise and Fall of Modern Empires 4-volume series: The Library of Essays on Law and Religion 3-volume series: The History of the Book in the East
