Decomposition - Landll

Materials: -Real small gardening shovels -Soil/Dirt (could be from the playground, ect.) -Large Bucket -Different types of papers (tissue, notebook, wrapping...) -Cardboard -Aluminum Pop Tab -Plastic Bag -Styrofoam Procedure: Discuss with the children and review what they already know about recycling. Have them think and predict which materials will start to break down rst and decompose if we bury them in dirt and mimick the Earth. Have them create a drawing of their predictions. Materials: Box of recyclable and non-recyclable items. Mini trash can. Actual Recycling Bin from Waste Management. Procedure: The children will be able to distinguish between materials based on if they can be recycled or not. We will place the trash can and bins on different sides of the big room, which is outside their classroom. We will give each child 2-3 materials and they will run across the big room and place the materials where they think they belong. Materials: Book- We are Extremely Good Recyclers, by Lauren Child. Large sheet of paper. Markers. Procedure: Start by doing a K-W-L chart on recycling with the children. Then, read the book to them. Make New Paper!


Materials: -Old scraps of paper (any kind will do) -Water -Glue -Paper press (Looks like two strainers that you push together and close) Procedure: Have the children tear up the used paper into small pieces. Then, make predictions on what will happen if they try to make new paper and what they think will happen. Mix scraps with water and just a little bit of glue, then spread it in the paper press. Wait till it dries and have them make observations and nally, peel of the new paper they created.
