2014 1st Grade Field Trip Sleeping Bear Dunes

Bus will take 26 people 2. If there are parents who would like to join us, they are welcome to come and join us for the day. I do ask that they ride separately due to space on the bus and the number of spots already filled to cover my chaperone positions. Extra parents are welcome to tag along with their childs chaperone group. 3. No child will be allowed to go with their parent, away from their group while on the field trip. All members of a group will stay together. Cost

Per Person Fee - $5.00 Each student will be required to pay their own fee. I will ask that each student gives me their $5.00 Monday, May 19th Mini Bus (School Bus) 16-25 person capacity - $40.00 Parents Separate from the Bus - $40.00 + $5.00 per person fee Students and Chaperones will pay for their admission fee (expecting) $130.00

PTO will cover gas and bus Parents wishing to join the field trip on their own will pay for themselves Lunch In the morning, I will provide granola bars or some sort of small snack on the bus Students will bring a sack lunch with them. Students can bring a ham, turkey, bologna, or peanut butter/PB&J sandwich; our class does not have any allergies. Water bottles are also asked to be brought. Students are welcome to have a snack for the ride back to school. Preparation before the Field Trip Current unit of Study: Life Science Organization of Living Things

L.OL.E.1 Life Requirements - Organisms have basic needs. Animals and plants need air, water, and food. Plants also require light. Plants and animals use food as a source of energy and as a source of building material for growth and repair. L.OL.E.2 Life Cycles - Plants and animals have life cycles. Both plants and animals begin life and develop into adults, reproduce, and eventually die. The details of this life cycle are different for different organisms. E.ES.E.1 Solar Energy - The sun warms the land, air and water and helps plants grow. E.ES.E.2 Weather - Weather changes from day to day and over the seasons.

Purpose of the Field Trip: 1. Observe the weather differences from winter to spring. a. How does it affect the environment? 2. How does the land change? a. Plants and Animals? 3. To have fun, run and climb the dunes, and enjoy being outside and away from the classroom for a day! Activities: Before the Field Trip: 1. Read Legend of the Sleeping Bear Dunes 2. View PowerPoint and show the students the website

During the Field Trip: 1. Scavenger Hunt in the Visitor Center 2. Scavenger Hunt/Observations on the Dunes and the Trail 3. Observations of the Weather and the formations of the sand dunes For activities 2 and 3, I will provide each group with a pad of paper and writing utensil. The parent chaperone of the group will manage the notebook, but the students will direct what is to be written down based on their observations. Students will also receive a group disposable camera. They can use this to take pictures of things that they observe. A picture is worth a thousand words! After the Field Trip: 1. Classroom Discussion: Talk about our observations that we made and what we learned from the rangers and the video.

Hart Visitor Center Bathroom Break Welcome by Park Ranger Introduction to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the National Park Service 15-minute film Dreams of the Sleeping Bear 9:30 am 9:50 am 10:05 am 11:30 am Visitor Exhibit Scavenger Hunt Depart Visitor Center for trailhead Arrive at trailhead for Ranger led hike Hike ends Travel back to Dune Climb seating area for lunch/bathroom/free time 12:45 pm 1:20 pm 1:30 pm 3:30 pm Walk along Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail Wrap up trip with park Ranger Depart for school Dismissal
