DIRECTIONS: On page 5 of your notebook, number the page and write the title Characterization Notes. Copy the following information about characterization from the PowerPoint slides that follow. Write down the page number and assignment title on your Table of Contents page in the front of your notebook.

Characterization is the process by which the author reveals the personality of the character. Characterization is revealed through direct characterization and indirect characterization.

Character Traits
Characters (and real-life people) have unique attributes called traits. A character trait is the way a person or a character in a book acts: its a part of their personality and it comes from inside.

Glue this Character Traits list on page 8 of your novel notebook. Dont forget to add the page number and assignment title to your table of contents on page 2.

Character Traits

Characterization
Direct characterization The author tells the audience exactly what the character is like by listing the characters personality traits. Example: The patient boy and quiet girl were both wellmannered and did not disobey their mother. Explanation: The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. The boy is patient and the girl is quiet.

Characterization
Indirect characterization The author shows the audience what the character does and says and shows how others react to the character. You must use those clues to figure out what the character is like.

Example: When I broke my leg, Steve stopped by my house every day after school to bring my homework and keep me company. Explanation: What is Steve like? _______________________________________________________ _____________________________________________

Indirect Characterization: S.T.E.A.L.

Glue this handout on page 7 in your novel notebook. Dont forget to add the page number and assignment title to your Table of Contents on page 2.
