AND
District Assessment on Tuesday, November 10, 2009

FRIDAY QUIZ (11/6/09)

You will need to know:

1. Food Chains:
o Where does the energy in a food chain originally come from?
o What direction do the arrows follow in a food chain or food web?
o Know vocabulary: producer, consumer, herbivore, omnivore, carnivore, food
chain, food web, predator, prey
o Understand how changes in part of a food chain or food web can affect other
parts of the web
2. Adaptations—BODY PARTS or BEHAVIORS that help an organism to
survive!
o Give examples of physical/structural adaptations (body parts) that might help
an organism to survive in each biome (SEE NOTES!)
o Give examples of behavioral adaptations (migration, hibernation, playing
dead, etc) that might help an organism to survive in each biome (SEE
NOTES!)

District Assessment TEST (11/10/09)

You will need to know ALL of the information included on the Friday Quiz PLUS:

1. The steps of the scientific process/Scientific Process Chant

o Review variables and controls—(See Reading passage clipped into
NOTES!)
a. Only change ONE variable at a time!
b. Controls are things that you keep the same
o Review TESTABLE QUESTIONS:
o Must be measurable, testable, specific, NO OPINIONS!
2. Review scientific tools—NAMES, and USES
o Review how to read a graduated cylinder, metric ruler, triple beam
balance, and thermometer
3. Review the Water Cycle
o Groundwater, Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Run-off
o Transpiration = water vapor released from plant leaves during
photosynthesis
o Why is it important?
o What is the energy source behind the water cycle?
o What happens if you change one part of the water cycle? (THINK: Cause
and Effect!)
4. Review the Nitrogen Cycle
o Sentence strip study guide—know all parts
o Why is it important?
o What happens if you change one part of the nitrogen cycle? (THINK: Cause
and Effect!)
5. Review the Carbon Cycle
o Drawing completed with me in class—know main parts of the cycle
o What role do plants (producers) play?
o What role do animals (consumers) play?
o What other things add to the amount of carbon in our atmosphere?
o Why is it important?
o What happens if you change one part of the carbon cycle? (THINK:
Cause and Effect!)
6. Review Photosynthesis
o What materials does a plant need from the environment to carry out
photosynthesis?
o What are the main products of photosynthesis?
o What does a plant “throw away” or release into the atmosphere during
photosynthesis?
o Why is photosynthesis important to ALL living things on Earth?
o Why do we call plants “producers?”
7. Review Reading Charts, Graphs, Tables
o Bar Graphs show one-time counts
o Line Graphs show relationships OR changes over time
o Circle Graphs show parts of a whole—they MUST add up to 100%
o Look at the title and scale carefully; introduce yourself to the graph!
o Look at each answer choice and use the graph to PROVE or DISPROVE,
based on the evidence
8. Know vocabulary:
o Infer/Inference = “figure it out” based on the evidence
o Analyze = look at very carefully; take it apart piece by piece
o Data = information
o Precaution = action to prevent an accident
o Hazard = dangerous action or situation that may cause an accident
o Valid = true
o Reliable = trustworthy
o Volume = amount of space an object takes up
o Mass = amount of “stuff”; amount of matter in an object
o Drought = period of dry weather
o Scarce = not much of something
o Increase = go up in number
o Decrease = go down in number
o Decline = go down in number (synonym for decrease)
o Accurate = correct
