Fencing design, materials, fabrication, and installation shall be in accordance with this Guide. Additional requirements for high-security fencing shall be in accordance with project specifications.

3.3 The contractors proposal shall include location and detail drawings of proposed installations and complete information on types of fence proposed. 4. DESIGN 4.1 Fabric

4.1.1 Fencing shall be made of industrial-type, corrosion-resistant chain link fabric. All fabrics shall be woven in 50 mm (2 in.) diamond mesh. Top and bottom salvages shall be twisted and barbed. 4.1.2 4.2 All fabrics shall be made of 3.8 mm (0.148 in.) diameter wire, No. 9 American Wire Gage (AWG). Height

The minimum fabric height of fencing shall be as follows:

Fabric Height Fencing Perimeter Electrical substation Internal security m 2.5 2.1 1.8 ft 8 7 6

4.3

Barbed Wire

4.3.1 On perimeter fencing, three taut and equally spaced strands of barbed wire, attached to extension arms, shall be added to the top of the fence. Extension arms shall protrude upward and outward at 45 degrees to provide an additional 0.3 m (1 ft) of height. If the fence is erected directly on the property line and a problem of encroachment arises, the barbed wire arms may be extended upward and inward at 45 degrees. Barbed wire may also consist of six strands attached to "V" arms, three on each side, protruding at 45 degrees inward and outward. Barbed wire arrangement shall be as detailed on the data sheet. 4.3.2 All barbed wires shall consist of two twisted 2.5 mm (0.099 in.) diameter wires, No. 12 AWG, carrying four-point barbs of 2.0 mm (0.080 in.) diameter wire, No. 14 AWG, on 125 mm (5 in.) spacing. 4.4 4.4.1 Posts Line posts shall be installed at intervals not exceeding 3.0 m (10 ft).

4.4.2 Terminal posts (end and corner) shall be installed at the beginning and end of each continuous length of fence and at abrupt changes in vertical and horizontal alignments. 4.4.3 Intermediate pull posts shall be installed on long stretches of fence at intervals not exceeding 152 m (500 ft). 4.4.4
pipe size, inches)

Terminal and pull posts shall be braced to each adjacent line post, using NPS 1 (NPS = nominal horizontal pipe as a compression member and an adjustable truss rod of 10 mm (3/8 in.)

minimum diameter as a tension member. 4.4.5 4.5 All post caps shall be weathertight. Rails

Fabrics shall be installed with continuous NPS 1 top and bottom rails. However, bottom rail can be replaced by a tension wire, if so indicated on the data sheet. The diameter of the coated wires shall be 4.50 mm (0.177 in.). If fabric height is greater than 2.5 m (8 ft), the fence shall be provided with a middle rail of the same size, material, and finish as the top rail. 4.6 Gates

Gate designs shall conform to the requirements of ASTM F900 for swing gates and ASTM F1184 for slide gates. Gate types and widths shall be given on EGE 01-D-12. 4.7 Foundations

4.7.1 Concrete for foundations shall develop a minimum compressive strength of 21 MPa (3000 psi) during a 28-day period. 4.7.2 Line posts shall be set belowgrade a minimum of 0.9 m (3 ft), plus 75 mm (3 in.) for each 0.3 m (1 ft) increase in the fence height above 2.5 m (8 ft), and encased in 100 mm (4 in.) minimum concrete cover. 4.7.3 Terminal and pull posts shall be set belowgrade a minimum of 1.1 m (3 ft, 8 in.), plus 75 mm (3 in.) for each 0.3 m (1 ft) increase in the fence height above 2.5 m (8 ft), and encased in 150 mm (6 in.) minimum concrete cover. 4.7.4 Where soil condition is poor, concrete footing size and depth of foundation shall be increased as necessary. 4.7.5 Footing size for gate posts shall be designed for the weight and type of gate, but shall not be smaller than the footing size for terminal and pull posts. 4.7.6 Notwithstanding the provisions of Paragraphs 4.7.2 and 4.7.3 above, the bottoms of all concrete footings shall be set below the frost line. 4.7.7 water. Top of foundations shall be 50 mm (2 in.) above finished grade and shall be crowned to shed

5. MATERIALS AND COATING Fence materials and coating shall be in accordance with Table 1. Material and coating selection shall be given on the data sheet. 6. INSTALLATION 6.1 Property line fences shall be installed in conformance with local requirements.

6.2 Fences shall not deviate from specified fence lines by more than 12 mm ( in.) and shall follow contours of finished grades with 50 mm (2 in.) maximum clearance below the bottom of the fence, bottom

MOBIL ENGINEERING GUIDE EGE 01-B-12 1991 rail, or tension wire at any post location. 6.3 Fence fabric shall be stretched taut and securely fastened to posts. The fabric shall be cut, and each span shall be independently attached to terminal posts. This shall be done by using stretcher bars held by post clips spaced at intervals not to exceed 375 mm (15 in.). The top and bottom edges of the fabric shall be fastened to the top and bottom rails or tension wire by means of wire ties at intervals not exceeding 375 mm (15 in.). 6.4 Stretcher bars shall be one piece 5 mm x 19 mm (3/16 in. x 3/4 in.) minimum and equal in length to the full height of the fabric. 6.5 Where fences are run through drainage areas, culverts or troughs shall be provided to carry off water. The resulting openings below the bottom of the fence shall be closed by proper barriers. Each barrier shall allow the flow of water while minimizing the collection of debris. Barrier design shall be subject to Mobil approval. 6.6 Electrical substation fences shall be grounded in accordance with EGE 33-B-14 and meet the requirements of EGE 33-B-4.
