Hey All, My name is Laura Cipolla and I am a senior doubling majoring in Early Childhood Education and Communication Studies. I am recently engaged to my fianc, Joe and I have an 8 year old stepson to be. I am in love with both of my majors NOW, but I didnt always have such a clear picture of what I wanted to be and how I was going to get there. This is my journey!
From freshman to Business Woman
Usually the next step out of High School is College. I had no interest in college after High School. My mindset was, I just finished 12 years of school and now they want me to go another 4? My brother was a recent graduate of Rutgers University and coming from a family who was so pro-college, I did not have a choice in the matter. From Edison High to Middlesex County College it was for me.
Needless to say, I didnt do so well my first semester at college. I started my Education degree here, but it just wasnt for me. I would never went to class and my trasncripts had more Ws on it than actual grades for classes. I simply was not ready for college. I had no idea what I wanted to major in and I just simply did not want to be a college student, so.I dropped out and went to work. One of my brothers friends got me a job at Software House International as a sales rep. THIS felt more like home to me.
After a year of working full time I thought to myself, What if I dont want to work at a software company the rest of my life? I had no degree behind me. This is when I slowly started my journey back into college. I started attending college part time and working full time. I noticed that I was not getting many classes done, so I went part time at the Software Company and attended school full time. I graduated from Middlesex County College in May of 2011 with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. I still had no idea what I wanted to do with life.
Big Changes
In the Fall of 2011, I decided to pack my bags and move to Montclair State University where I was working on a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. Why Psychology? I have no idea. Still..I had no idea what I wanted to do with life. It didnt take me long to realize that I couldnt stand the college I was in and I couldnt stand my major. I was much older than the girls I was living with and we just didnt have the same lifestyle. The campus was too big and I felt like such an outside. After only being there for three months, I moved back home. I was lost. I found a few short term jobs, but it just wasnt cutting it. I knew I wasnt happy with getting just my Associates Degree. I needed something more, but where do I go and get that?
Then it hit me! My brother was a Communication Studies major and loved it. I should look into that and that was exactly what I did! I looked up different majors at Kean and decided that this is what I wanted to do. SOIn the Fall of 2012, I started Kean University as a Communication Studies major.
The Happy Ending
As soon as I started Kean, I fell in love. I was loving my classes and I adored the campus. THIS was where I was supposed to be. I decided to double major and take on Early Childhood Education as well. I knew that Communications is a pretty broad area, so I wanted to have more of a focus. Right after High School I started a degree in Education and I adored children and teaching them, so I went back to it. I dont regret any of the choices that I made regarding school because I wouldnt be where I am today. It is not a chore for me to go to school anymore; I love it. Every day I know that I am one step closer to that Bachelors Degree. The Moral DO NOT start college until you are ready. Families, friends, etc. may be ready and excited for you to start college the day you graduate High School, but unless you are truly ready and feel it in your heart..DONT! You have to do what is right for you. Take my story as your real life example. I went from dropping out of college to being a Deans List and Academic Honors student years later. Why? Because now I was ready and I truly wanted to be in college and get my degree. This was my passion now.
A Few Extra Details
Like I said before, I am recently engaged and have an 8 year old stepson to be. My wedding will be October 11, 2015 because we decided to wait until we were both done with college. I feel so accomplished getting my two Bachelors degrees and I am truly the happiest Ive ever been. My stepson is in the 2 nd grade and it is so cool applying the different concepts that I am learning in school to him. Instead of coming home and dreading homework and projects, I look forward to them. Doing projects with my stepson prepares me for the work I will have to do when I am a teacher and I am teaching him in the meantime. If you are a student that is not sure what you want to do in life, I hope you take my advice. Take your time, breathe, and listen to your heartYOU WILL find your happiness!
