1. THE PATTERN OF THE KINGDOM IntheGardenofEdenweseetheworldasGoddesignedittobe.Godspeople,AdamandEve,liveinGodsplace,the
garden,underhisruleastheysubmittohisword.AndtobeunderGodsruleintheBibleisalwaystoenjoyhisblessing;itisthebestwaytolive.

2. THE PERISHED KINGDOM Adam&EvetrytorunlifetheirownwaywithoutGod.TheyarenolongerGodspeoplebecauseastheyturnawayfromHim,
Heturnsawayfromthem.TheyarebanishedfromGodsplace,thegarden.AndtheyarenolongerunderGodsrulesotheydontenjoyhis
blessing.InsteadtheyfaceGodscurseandjudgment.BUTGod,inhisgreatlove,isdeterminedtorestorehiskingdom
3. THE PROMISED KINGDOM GodcallsAbramandmakessomeunconditionalpromisestohim:throughhisdescendantshewillreestablishhiskingdom.
TheywillbeGodspeople,livinginGodsplace[theland]underGodsruleandenjoyinghisblessing,andthroughthemallpeoplesonearthwillbe
blessed.Thatpromiseisthegospel.ItispartiallyfulfilledinthehistoryofIsrael,butisonlyfinallyfulfilledthroughJesusChrist.
4. THE PARTIAL KINGDOM GodspromisestoAbrahamarepartiallyfulfilledinIsraelshistory.ThroughtheexodusfromEgypt,GodmakesAbrahams
descendantshisveryownpeople.AtMountSinaihegivesthemhislawsothattheymightliveunderhisruleandenjoyhisblessing,asAdamand
Evehaddonebeforetheysinned.TheblessingismarkedchieflybyGodspresencewithhispeopleinthetabernacle.UnderJoshuatheyenterthe
landand,bythetimeofKingsDavidandSolomon,theyenjoypeaceandprosperitythere.ThatwasthehighpointofthehistoryofIsrael.Theywere
GodspeopleinGodsplace,thelandofCanaan,underGodsruleandthereforeenjoyinghisblessing.ButthepromisesmadetoAbrahamhadstill
notbeencompletelyfulfilled.Theproblemwassin,thecontinualdisobedienceofthepeopleofIsrael.Thatwassoontoleadtothedismantlingof
thepartialkingdomasIsraelfellapart.
5. THE PROPHESIED KINGDOM AfterthedeathofKingSolomoncivilwarbrokeoutandthekingdomofIsraelsplitintotwoparts:Israelinthenorthand
Judahinthesouth.Neitherwasstrong.After200yearsofseparateexistence,thenorthernkingdomofIsraelwasdestroyedbytheAssyrians.The
southernkingdomstruggledonforanothercentury,butthenittoowasconqueredanditsinhabitantsweretakenintoexileinBabylon.Duringthis
depressingperiodintheirhistoryGodspoketothepeopleofIsraelandJudahthroughsomeprophets.Heexplainedthattheywerebeingpunished
fortheirsinbutstillofferedhopeforthefuture.TheprophetspointedforwardtoatimewhenGodwouldactdecisivelythroughhisKing,the
Messiah,tofulfilallhispromises.ThepeopleofJudahmusthavethoughtsthatthattimehadcomewhentheywereallowedtoreturnfromexile,
butGodmadeitclearthatthegreattimeofsalvationwasstillinthefuture.ThatiswheretheOldTestamentends:waitingforGodsKingtoappear
tointroducehiskingdom.
6. THE PRESENT KINGDOM 400yearspassedafterthecompletionoftheOldTestamentbeforeJesusbeganhispublicministrywiththewords,Thetime
hascomeThekingdomofGodisnear(Mk1:15).Thewaitingwasover;GodskinghadcometoestablishGodskingdom.Hislife,teachingand
miraclesallprovedthathewaswhohesaidhewas:Godhimselfinhumanform.Hehadthepowertoputeverythingrightagain,andhechosea
verysurprisingwayofdoingit:bydyinginweaknessonacross.ItwasbyhisdeaththatJesusdealtwiththeproblemofsinandmadeitpossiblefor
humanbeingstocomebackintorelationshipwithhisFather.TheresurrectionprovedthesuccessofJesusrescuemissiononthecrossand
announcedthatthereishopeforourworld.ThosewhotrustinChristcanlookforwardtoeternallifewithhim.
7. THE PROCLAIMED KINGDOMByhisdeathandresurrectionJesusdidallthatwasnecessarytoputeverythingrightagainandcompletelyrestoreGods
kingdom.Buthedidnotfinishthejobwhenhewasfirstonearth.Heascendedintoheavenandmadeitclearthattherewouldbeadelaybeforehe
returned.ThedelayistoenablemorepeopletohearaboutthegoodnewsofChristsotheycanputtheirtrustinhimandbereadyforhimwhenhe
comes.Weliveduringthisperiod,whichtheBiblecallsthelastdays.ItbeganontheDayofPentecostwhenGodsenttheSpirittoequiphis
churchtotellthewholeworldaboutChrist.
8. THE PERFECTED KINGDOMOnedayChristwillreturn.Therewillbeagreatdivision.Hisenemieswillbeseparatedfromhisgoodnessinhell,buthis
peoplewilljoinhiminaperfectnewcreation.Thenatlastthegospelpromiseswillbecompletelyfulfilled.Thebookofrevelationdescribesafully
restoredkingdom:Godspeople,Christiansfromallnations,inGodsplace,thenewcreation(heaven),underGodsruleandthereforeenjoyinghis
